To avoid confusion let me say there are two Kokomos in Angeles. Both have the same owner and are part of the business group that includes two clubs. The original sits smack dab in the middle of the strip, has a pool and a restaurant. The second, smaller, Kokomo used to be called the Medgar but is now called the Kokomo Suites. It sits on Narciso Avenue about a mile up the road from the big Kokomo.
I recently spent a week at the little Kokomo. What I found was a solid, traditional hotel that offers big value for little money. I booked online for approximately US $20+ per night which entitled me to a first-floor room with the full-size bed, full-size bath, and a small kitchenette. The wifi worked fine. The furniture, like the hotel, is traditional in style and rather solid; I found it reassuring that the room safe was attached to a credenza that wasn’t going anywhere without major demolition.
There is a downside, being a budget hotel Kokomo Suites doesn’t have the pool, the restaurant, on-site laundry, or other amenities. But so what? You can order food from the big Kokomo at a discount and have it delivered. There are two laundromats just a few doors down. One has coin operated machines. A 7-11 store is a few doors down so stocking up on beer, and other essentials isn’t an issue.
Another fault, not being on the strip, actually worked for me. Narciso Avenue is a short walk to the main shopping center, the SM Mall, and transport hubs. Walking toward the strip, you’ll find dozens of small shops, a 24 hr supermarket, restaurants, two outdoor markets and a variety of street vendors.
If you prefer not to walk, you can always hop a trike, a motorcycle with side care which serves as in town taxies to one of the clubs. The Kokomo provides coupons for complimentary drinks at its clubs, which are as a good place as any to start exploring.
Solid, well placed, and a very good value for the money. What more do you need?
