It is totally Child-Friendly Place. I love how fast the services at the Restaurant & Cafe. The place is Serene and Calm perfect for family get together and relaxation. We totally enjoyed our stay. We just hope the hotel can arrange transport back to the Maasin for more convenience, especially, that the area does not have readily available public transportation. (We didn't ask the reception though). But all in all, we are blessed to have stayed at Kuting Reef. Thank you.

Your Travel Guide to Macrohon as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Macrohon from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Macrohon from Manila typically involves a flight to Tacloban City (Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport), which is the most practical gateway. Flight prices can vary significantly, but budget-conscious travelers might find fares starting from PHP 2,500 to PHP 4,000 for a round trip if booked in advance or during promotional periods. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

From Tacloban Airport, you have several options to reach Macrohon. The most common method is by bus. Buses heading south towards Liloan, Maasin, or Sogod regularly depart from the Tacloban City bus terminal. The journey to Macrohon takes about 3 to 4 hours, and bus fares typically range from PHP 300 to PHP 500. Alternatively, you can hire a private van or car for a more direct and comfortable transfer, though this will be more expensive, potentially costing PHP 3,000 to PHP 5,000.

For travelers coming from other major Philippine cities like Cebu or Cagayan de Oro, you might consider flying into Tacloban or taking a ferry to a nearby port in Southern Leyte. For instance, ferry services connect Cebu to Hilongos or Bato in Southern Leyte. From these ports, you would then take a bus or van to Macrohon. Planning your trip in advance and checking schedules for both flights and ferries is crucial for a smooth journey. Remember to book flight tickets early to secure the best prices.

Best Time to Visit Macrohon

The climate in Southern Leyte, including Macrohon, is generally tropical, characterized by warm temperatures and humidity throughout the year. The dry season, typically from March to May, offers the most pleasant weather for outdoor activities and beach enjoyment, with lower chances of rain and slightly less humidity. This period is considered peak season, so expect more visitors and potentially higher accommodation rates.

The wet season runs from June to February, with rainfall being more frequent, especially from November to January. While rain is common, it often comes in short, heavy bursts, and sunny periods can still be found. Traveling during the shoulder months, such as June or October, can offer a good balance, with fewer crowds and more affordable prices, while still enjoying decent weather. For those who don't mind occasional rain and prefer a quieter atmosphere, the wet season can still be a rewarding time to visit.

Food and Dining Near Macrohon — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Southern Leyte, exploring the local cuisine is a delightful part of the travel experience. One dish you should seek out is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, typically tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers, offering a tangy and refreshing taste that is perfect for the tropical climate. Many local eateries and carinderias will serve this.

Another local specialty to try is SUTUKIL, a cooking method that stands for Sugba (grill), Tuwa (stew), and Kilaw (raw). This offers a variety of ways to enjoy fresh seafood. You can often find restaurants that offer a SUTUKIL platter, allowing you to sample fish or shellfish prepared in these three distinct and delicious styles. It’s a fantastic way to experience the bounty of the sea.

Don't leave without trying some local delicacies like Puto Maya, a sticky rice cake often served with hot chocolate, and various types of Bibingka, a baked rice cake cooked in traditional clay pots. These sweet treats are perfect for breakfast or as an afternoon snack. Exploring the local markets and small food stalls in Macrohon and surrounding towns will lead you to these authentic flavors.

For a more substantial meal, look for dishes featuring local produce and seafood. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are commonly available and are usually prepared simply to highlight their freshness. Many small restaurants and even roadside stalls offer these, providing an authentic taste of Southern Leyte. Engaging with locals can often lead you to their favorite spots for the best regional dishes.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Macrohon

The people of Southern Leyte are known for their hospitality and strong sense of community. Respecting local customs, such as dressing modestly when visiting churches or more traditional areas, is appreciated. A simple "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) in the local dialect can go a long way in fostering positive interactions. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people.

Safety in Macrohon and Southern Leyte is generally good, with crime rates being relatively low. However, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions: be aware of your surroundings, secure your valuables, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. No hold bag service. No phone in the room no mirror in the bathroom. Hole place was not kept up and clean. No simple amenities like hot water maker or coffee in room. No car service at all and your in the middle of nowhere you have to offer some kind of transportation. The road leading back to the hotel was rocks and stones and they didn’t even offer us a simple ride to the main road with all our luggage. The water that came from the shower and sink smelled like sewage. I quit taking a shower and could not brush my teeth afraid of swallowing it. Wholes in the sheets. Half the plugs didn’t work. Had to unplug the lamp to charge my phone and all this for the same price I would have paid for a room in boracay. Way overpriced. You can tell they don’t care about that place anymore and just sucking ppls money that don’t know. So STAY AWAY FROM THIS HOTEL!!!

The Resort is Beautiful and the Staff is Friendly. However, the Rooms Looks Old, the AC takes a long time to get cold. Also, there is No WiFi you would have to go to the Lobby to use their WiFi. The Food is Really Good! My mother and I love it..

Very good service, my room was clean and the view was spectacular. I’ve been coming here for the last ten years and will continue. Sonja and June both work together with passion and wisdom and are greatly appreciated by many!

Most things were great. There were some minor maintenance issues and the WiFi in the room was weak.

It’s a quiet place. Not much around to do. Food options are very limited. Good place if you want to get away from society.

The outside area, grass and pool area was well maintained. The rooms are a little tired. Bathroom was not well maintained. Soap scum indoor and mould in the grout. The staff generally pleasant. Checkin was a disaster. Had to wait til 3.00pm to get a room. .

I felt it was overpriced for not having a refrigerator, TV. Window in our room will not lock. And it was infested with mosquitoes.

The staff was very attentive and friendly. Always looking for ways to serve. The only complaint I have is the lack of good internet.

Thank you.
