Your Travel Guide to Moalboal as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Moalboal from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from Manila or other major Philippine cities, the most efficient way to reach Moalboal is by flying into Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). Several airlines operate frequent flights from Manila (MNL) to Cebu (CEB). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. You can often find competitive fares if you book flight tickets in advance, with prices potentially ranging from PHP 2,500 to PHP 6,000 or more, depending on the season and booking time.

From Mactan-Cebu International Airport, your journey to Moalboal continues overland. The most common route involves taking a taxi or a ride-sharing service to the Cebu South Bus Terminal. This transfer typically costs around PHP 300-500 and takes about 45 minutes to an hour. At the South Bus Terminal, look for buses heading to Moalboal. These buses are usually air-conditioned and offer a comfortable ride. The bus fare is approximately PHP 250-350, and the trip takes about 3 to 4 hours.

Alternatively, for those who prefer driving, you can rent a car in Cebu City and drive to Moalboal. The route involves navigating national highways and provincial roads. The drive is scenic but can be long, taking around 3 to 4 hours. Be prepared for potential traffic, especially when leaving Cebu City. Toll fees are minimal on this route. This option provides the most flexibility for exploring the surrounding areas at your own pace.

Best Time to Visit Moalboal

Moalboal enjoys a tropical climate, meaning it's warm and humid year-round. The dry season, generally from November to May, is considered the peak tourist period. During these months, you can expect sunny days with less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities like diving, snorkeling, and island hopping. The seas are typically calmer, offering excellent visibility for underwater exploration, especially for witnessing the famous sardine runs.

The wet season runs from June to October. While this period can bring occasional rain showers and typhoons, it doesn't mean your trip will be ruined. Often, the rain is brief and localized, allowing plenty of sunshine in between. Traveling during the wet season can also mean fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, offering a more budget-friendly option for Filipino travelers. The marine life remains abundant year-round, so diving and snorkeling are still excellent activities.

For the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as November or May. These periods often provide pleasant weather conditions without the peak season influx. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Moalboal offers a unique coastal experience for every traveler.

Food and Dining Near Moalboal — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in its rich culinary landscape, and Moalboal offers plenty of opportunities to savor local flavors. A must-try is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, typically tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing and zesty appetizer, perfect for the tropical climate. You can find excellent Kinilaw at local eateries and seafood restaurants around Moalboal.

Another Filipino favorite you should seek out is Lechon. While Cebu is famous for its Lechon, you can still find delicious versions in Moalboal. This roasted whole pig is known for its incredibly crispy skin and succulent, flavorful meat. It’s a celebratory dish, often shared among family and friends, and a true taste of Filipino festivity. Look for local carinderias or restaurants that offer Lechon portions.

For a hearty and comforting meal, try Kare-Kare. This savory stew features tender oxtail, tripe, and vegetables simmered in a thick, peanut-based sauce. It's traditionally served with bagoong (shrimp paste) on the side, which adds a salty counterpoint to the rich sauce. It’s a popular dish in many Filipino households and restaurants, offering a unique and satisfying flavor profile.

Don't forget to sample some fresh seafood, a specialty in Moalboal. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are readily available and often cooked to perfection. Many restaurants allow you to choose your fresh catch and have it prepared to your liking, whether grilled, fried, or steamed. Pair it with a side of garlic rice and a local beer for an authentic Filipino dining experience. Exploring these dishes will enhance your appreciation for the local cuisine.

Booking said pool and there was none working We paid for two deluxe double rooms on hotels.com. when we arrived they showed us in to cheaper single rooms, with no explanation. When we complained they said they didn't have any rooms like that. They blamed hotels.com for making their listing look like they had them, saying they couldn't list it accurately because of their limited listing fields. Well, we were deceived. It really looked like they had them on hotels.com. They said we couldn't bring our two year old into the room with us, with no clear reason why. They later dropped that. They served us breakfast and then charged us without warning us there would be a charge for "additional persons." The listing said free breakfast. Also, the staff. They didn't care, and admitted it blatantly. They also admitted that they frequently get complaints, and are underpaid. Finally, the booking is nonrefundable. Pretty terrible situation when we arrived and the promises were not true! Apparently, terrible management.... don't book here.
