Our trip to Lagen Island was amazing! My husband and I visited on a vacation, and I highly recommend you visit this place! The location is dream-like, and every day, we were amazed to be in such a beautiful, serene, and relaxing environment. We loved that the resort was built with nature, so we always felt surrounded by the forest and the ocean. Amazing activities are included, so they should be included in your price assessment. We went on two 4-hour and one 3-hour sightseeing, kayaking, and snorkeling excursions, and they were fantastic! The crew was kind and informative and got us to popular spots before all the other tourists. Our guide on all our trips is the best! The resort also has great kayaking and a beautiful cove for kayaking and snorkeling. One of our favorites was the short hike over the island to a private beach. It was always empty for us; we could walk, kayak, and swim on it. The resort itself is beautiful, and everyone was so thoughtful and kind. They were always available to answer questions and help make our trip perfect. The team members became like family to us. The food was also great, and they had a great happy hour, which you can enjoy while watching the sunset. Stay here, you won't regret it!

The people are so nice. So many friendly staff members. Good was great and changed items on the buffet every day. Spacious, clean, beautiful resort. Private snorkeling beach on the back of the island. 2 morning tours and 1 afternoon tour that will take you to most of the good stops of tours a, b, and c for free. The staff to guest ratio is the best I’ve ever seen. Everyone was quick to answer any questions or guide you in a direction.

Your Travel Guide to El Nido as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to El Nido from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers, flying is the most practical way to reach El Nido. Flights from Manila (MNL) to El Nido Airport (LIO) typically range from PHP 4,000 to PHP 8,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and how far in advance you book. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. You can easily book flight tickets through Traveloka for competitive rates.

Alternatively, you can fly into Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS), which often has more frequent and cheaper flights. From Puerto Princesa, you can take a van or bus to El Nido town. This journey takes about 5 to 6 hours and typically costs between PHP 500 to PHP 800. While longer, this option can be more budget-friendly for those looking for a cheap hotel stay in El Nido.

For the adventurous, overland travel is possible but very time-consuming. It involves taking a bus from Manila to San Jose, Mindoro, then a ferry to El Nido. This route can take over 24 hours and is generally not recommended unless you have ample time and are seeking a unique travel experience. The cost can vary significantly based on ferry schedules and bus classes.

Best Time to Visit El Nido

The dry season, from November to May, is generally considered the best time to visit El Nido. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and calm seas, which are ideal for island hopping and beach activities. The peak tourist season falls between December and April, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and flights.

For those who prefer fewer crowds and potentially lower prices, the shoulder months of November and May can be excellent choices. While there's a slightly higher chance of rain, the weather is often still very pleasant. The wet season, from June to October, sees more rainfall and rougher seas, which can sometimes lead to tour cancellations. However, this period offers a more tranquil experience for travelers who don't mind the possibility of intermittent showers.

Food and Dining Near El Nido — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in El Nido, be sure to try fresh seafood, a staple in Palawan's cuisine. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are abundant and often prepared simply to highlight their natural flavors. Many local eateries and restaurants offer daily catches, so you can enjoy the taste of the ocean. Look for places that grill their seafood right in front of you for the freshest experience.

Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche, is another must-try. Made with raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili, it's a refreshing and tangy dish perfect for the tropical climate. You'll find variations of kinilaw in many local restaurants, each with its own unique twist. It’s a great appetizer to start your meal.

Adobo, a classic Filipino dish, is also widely available and prepared with local flair. Whether it's chicken, pork, or a combination, the savory and slightly tangy sauce is a comforting taste of home. Many restaurants in El Nido offer their own versions, often incorporating local ingredients for a distinct regional flavor.

Don't forget to sample La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo but popular nationwide. This rich broth filled with pork, shrimp, and vegetables is a satisfying meal, especially on a cooler evening. It’s a comforting and flavorful dish that offers a taste of Filipino culinary heritage.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for El Nido

Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and El Nido is no exception. A simple "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect local customs, dress modestly when visiting churches or more traditional areas, and always ask permission before taking photos of people. Understanding basic Filipino phrases can enhance your interactions.

El Nido is generally a safe place for tourists. However, it's always wise to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure, be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit places late at night. For emergencies, local police can be reached at their respective numbers, and it's good to have the contact details of your accommodation readily available.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is useful for getting around, even offline. A translation app can help bridge language gaps, though English is widely spoken. For booking transportation or tours, Traveloka's app is invaluable, offering a wide range of options and secure payment methods.

Having a local currency app can help you keep track of expenses, and a weather app is crucial for planning your daily activities, especially during the transitional seasons. These digital tools can significantly enhance your travel experience, making it smoother and more enjoyable as you explore the wonders of El Nido.

I am please that they know their guest name to welcome as soon as they enter the lobby. I appreciate the coconut leaf lei, love the welcoming song, it does feel like second home. Most of all the farewell song, The staff still waving as the motor boat departed. It makes u feel coming back again. We are thankful for the anniversary greetings in the bed with wine and fruits inside the water villa. The tour guide were very helpful making sure I am safe and comfortable in the water because I am not a swimmer. I appreciate the guide helping in the cave and taking photos. We anre anlso grateful for the doctor on duty be because in the last day, we got sick having diarrhea and vomiting. The first aide electrolytes really helps. Everything is excellent. We had a good time and memorable experience. Thank you to all the staff.

The perfect vacation! My husband and I spent 3 nights at Lagen Island Resort and every minute of it was amazing! We love the tranquility of the island and we really enjoyed the tours that the resort offered. The food was magnificent but the most special part of this place were the staff. Big shout out to Carryl, the best tour guides - Aldrin & Winston, Chef Paul who prepared an exquisite meal for us on our anniversary and Boss Mike who serenaded us during dinner which made this anniversary the most memorable one to date! Special thanks to the front desk staff who helped us straighten out our flight back to Manila! Thank you for making our stay a wonderful and unforgettable one! Hope to see you again soon!

We enjoyed our experience at Lagen Island. The island is stunning and full of nature. We found it convenient having all our tours coordinated through the resort (and small groups). Make sure to arrive in El Nido before 4pm to make your transfer to Lagen island. We hope to be back again soon!

Beautiful resort, idyllic location, the staff are amazing and the trips etc such as to big lagoon included in stay are an added bonus. Only thing I would say is they could do with some evening entertainment/music but overall an amazing place to stay !

We love the peace and quiet of the place. The resort is well-maintained and very clean. The towels and sheets are new, still fluffy and white. We love the hospitality and friendliness of all the staff, they gave a warm welcome upon our arrival and a goodbye song to the guests leaving. Checking in was very smooth and hassle-free. We arrived at the resort at 9:30am and while our room was not ready, Eds (Supervisor) gave us a nice room to freshen up and rest while waiting for our water cottage. Their activity coordinator planned our tours and activities according to the duration of our stay. She even arranged a trip to Miniloc on our last day so we could experience feeding the jackfishes. A four-day trip is definitely not enough and we'd love to go back!

Overall a really nice place to stay for a quiet island holiday. The full board option was quite nice, served buffet style food (local and western) and quality was very good. Staff was extremely friendly (like almost everywhere in Philippines as it seems) and they accommodated our requests swiftly. The location itself is great and the resort is lovely. Would say that compared to Miniloc it’s a bit more off the grid, as Miniloc has its own reef and is closer to most sights. However the tours Lagen offers (for free if you like!!!) are great. We did two private tours and the service was great. Our guide Joe was excellent and knew what tourists value. Acted as a “hobby photographer” at all times to capture our experience. The went all out for us, we truly loved the service. The speed boat takes about 20 min to get to most places, though it’s a rough ride if the sea is choppy. Overall improvement was the WiFi quality in the room. However they delivered a portable WiFi when we raised it. This one worked well. In General the Resort seems slightly dated and could use a bit of a touch up here and there (smart TV, update of paths, etc.). However, critique only marginal here. In General the condition was good and we would definitely come back.

Booked this for my parents. They had the time of their lives! This resort went above and beyond for them as they celebrated their anniversary - messages on the bed in palm leaves & flowers, special dessert for dinner, and there was a live musician who dedicated a song to them. The resort is absolutely stunning, the sand so soft, the water beautiful turquoise, the staff were so welcoming and they felt very safe their entire time. They stayed in a water cottage which was an amazing experience and worth the extra money. Many excursions and activities to do like snorkelling over coral and lagoon kayaking. Staff were also very easy to communicate with via email. Now I want to go! Thank you for a wonderful vacation!

From start to finish my honeymoon here was amazing! You receive a welcome song and a good-bye song when you go. Staff are very friendly, always smiling, and accommodating. The scenery is breathtaking and waters are pristine. The area is private so its a romantic spot. The manager, Sanders, prepared a romantic complimentary dinner for my husband and I on our last night on the dock with our own server, Leo, who was also great! There is a private beach around the corner from the resort that you can kayak to, or take a speed boat, or hike to. There are rocks there so I would recommend someone wear their water shoes. You can also snorkel at this beach! The waters are so clear at the resort that you can see all kinds of fish swimming around already, especially if you try the paddle boarding there! Definitely would recommend this place if you are looking for a relaxing vacation!

Great staff, great location, nice welcome, quiet and relaxing resort. A bit pricey though. Getting the complete package only for full days when you can do the tours and have all 3 meals is worth it but not on partial days like day of arrival and day of departure. Surprised us with a two for 1 dinner buffet and an anniversary dessert plate. Two for one happy hour is great.

Amazing setting and natural beauty. The facilities are a bit run down and in need of refurbishing. The hotel is clean and well maintained but it has aged and is rundown. Time for some capital expenditures by Ayala. The staff is well trained and provided great personalized service. The food, served mostly in a buffet setting, is good. The daily catch was especially good. The island hopping and snorkeling were outstanding.
