Your Travel Guide to El Nido as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to El Nido from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way for most Filipinos to reach El Nido is by air. Direct flights from Manila (MNL) to El Nido's Lio Airport (ENI) are available and typically take around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly, often ranging from PHP 4,000 to PHP 8,000 for a round trip if booked in advance, especially during peak seasons. Airlines like AirSWIFT operate these routes.

Alternatively, you can fly into Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS), which often has more flight options and potentially lower fares from various Philippine cities. From Puerto Princesa, you can then take a van or bus to El Nido town. This journey takes approximately 5 to 6 hours and typically costs between PHP 500 to PHP 800 for a one-way ticket. This option is more time-consuming but can be more budget-friendly.

For the adventurous and budget-conscious, bus travel from Manila to El Nido is also an option, though it is a very long journey, often exceeding 24 hours. This involves taking a bus to San Jose, Mindoro, then a ferry to El Nido. It's a route best suited for those with ample time and a desire to see more of the Philippines overland and by sea. Booking your flight in advance is highly recommended to secure the best prices and schedules.

Best Time to Visit El Nido

El Nido experiences a tropical climate, with distinct dry and wet seasons. The dry season, generally from November to May, is considered the peak tourist period. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and ideal conditions for island hopping and beach activities. The weather is consistently pleasant, making it perfect for exploring the lagoons and snorkeling spots.

The wet season runs from June to October, characterized by increased rainfall, potential typhoons, and rougher seas. While this period sees fewer tourists and potentially lower prices, some tours and activities might be canceled due to weather conditions. For travelers prioritizing reliable sunshine and calm waters for their El Nido adventure, the dry season, particularly from December to April, offers the most favorable conditions.

Food and Dining Near El Nido — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Filipino cuisine is diverse and delicious, and El Nido offers a chance to savor regional specialties alongside national favorites. When in El Nido, be sure to try fresh seafood, a staple in this coastal town. Grilled fish, squid, and prawns are commonly available and prepared simply to highlight their natural flavors. Many local eateries and restaurants along the coast offer these delights.

Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche, is another must-try. Fresh raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers, offering a tangy and refreshing taste that is perfect for the tropical climate. You can find excellent kinilaw in many local carinderias and restaurants, often prepared with the catch of the day.

Adobo, the national dish, is also a common offering. Whether it's chicken or pork, the savory and slightly tangy flavor of soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns is a comforting taste of home for many Filipinos. Look for restaurants that offer their own unique take on this classic dish.

Don't forget to sample La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo, which has found its way to many parts of the Philippines. Its rich broth, tender pork, and flavorful noodles make it a satisfying meal, especially after a long day of exploring. Exploring the local food scene is an integral part of the travel experience in El Nido.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for El Nido

El Nido is part of the Philippines, and as such, Filipino customs and etiquette generally apply. Politeness and respect are highly valued. Greetings like "Magandang umaga/hapon/gabi" (Good morning/afternoon/evening) are appreciated. When visiting local communities or interacting with residents, always be respectful of their traditions and way of life.

Safety in El Nido is generally good, but like any travel destination, it's wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded areas. Be aware of your surroundings, particularly at night. It's advisable to use reputable transport services and to be cautious when swimming in unfamiliar waters. Emergency numbers for local police and medical services should be noted.

For essential travel needs, several apps can be very helpful. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is useful for getting around, though mobile signal can be spotty in some areas. Ride-hailing apps are not as prevalent as in major cities, so local tricycle and van services are more common. A currency converter app can be handy for managing your budget. Finally, a translation app might be useful if you encounter phrases you're unfamiliar with, though English is widely understood in tourist areas.

Overall excellent customer service. The weak internet is a broadband issue for the entire area and not the hotel. I’ve talked to the owner and he understands the need for a faster internet access. As of today, they’ve installed a Starlink (Elon Musk) satellite internet dish and this should greatly improve wi-fi speed. But this is for future guests to comment on.

Lovely location and comparatively quiet beach versus other parts of the beach, BUT this is definitely a 2.5* hotel. First, there’s a substantial 200m hike from the road along the beach to reach the hotel. The WiFi is extremely weak and only works at the lobby/ restaurant. The rooms are reasonably-sized but very austere and of very poor design. I was fine with no TV, there there was no reading lamp. In my room there was quite a powerful AC unit but no controller. You’d have to be 7ft tall to reach the controller. An employee smiled and suggested that pulling the plug from the outlet was the only means of controlling the AC. There’s no hot water in the rooms - it must requested and brought via jugs. I had to request bath towels. The toilet seat didn’t stay up (no problem for women I guess). The mattress and pillows were fine and clean. The restaurant Food is ok, but there were no napkins at dinner, and during the day they ran out of 2 of the 3 beer styles they served. Staff were friendly, but they could use some guidance as to improving service levels.

Our stay at Las Cabanas in El Nido was a beautiful complement to our time in the fast moving city life of Makati. The beach cottage (cabin #1), the visual environment, the water, the people - every aspect of our stay left a deep and memorable impression on us. We were moved by the hospitality and kind welcome we received. The food and drinks were delicious and the staff is thoughtful and accomodating. Every view is of paradise. Much is said about the sunsets, and this is understandable, but the sunrise is something spectacular. I woke early every morning before the beach torches were put out so I could wade through the water as the morning sun burned away the mist from the surreal-looking islands, and illuminated the world class landscape. I would suggest avoiding the group Island hopping tours and instead talking to Hazel early about chartering your own boat for the day. The trip with “Tom & Jerry” and “Captain Jack” was the highlight of our stay, and that says a lot. The whole venture brought us to 4 islands, one completely private beach, a feast of a lunch, an encounter with a 4-foot monitor lizard, kayaking, swimming, & cost us 1750 pisos for the day, and we tipped the guys the rest of what we had because it was so spectacular. When we return to the Philippines we will undoubtedly return to Las Cabanas. Make sure to bring a range of cash (no cards accepted - you can catch a trike up to El Nido to the ATM for 150 Pisos each way if necessary) and please, tip well.

Wouldn’t stay there again. Multiple times the manageress (not Hazel, the other lady in charge) bumped up a price they’d previously quoted us for each day trip we did. That explains the shouting match we witnessed on our first day between a lady checking out (she was paying for trips) with staff about her being overcharged. The first time it happened to us we paid the extra 1200 peso but after that we firmly said we weren’t paying more than they told us and she then went with the original price. It doesn’t make for a nice feeling about the place you’re staying in though

This place did not disappoint. The location by the beach is fantastic tho far from the main town which can be a plus.. to reach the resort .. it's a 30min local ride of php 400. Then walking down a steep staircase of 71 steps..and a walk along the beach for 10minutes. The beach is quiet and vendors are almost non existent as opposed to the Caribbean resorts. Las Cabanas have a well kept landscape with several hammocks hanging between coconut trees. They also provide number of sunbeds for guests. Their restaurant serves a pleasing fruit platter or mangoes, pineapple, watermelon/apples for breakfast . For dessert, try their mango float. For dinner, we enjoyed their Tinola. a chicken ginger soup with green papaya and pepper leaves served with rice. We ate most of our meals at the resort and they are delicious and nicely presented. We stayed in a room with no AC but the fans and the sea breeze made it comfortable. The room was clean and the bathroom is equipped with a decent shower. Shower is just room temperature no hot water. Take note : they provide a complimentary 1L mineral water everyday but no shampoos. They do provide a huge bottle of body wash. What we love about this place.. your door opens up onto to the beach, the sunset, the island life before your eyes, the complimentary breakfast and the wonderful, hard working staff.

Overall was satisfactory. The location was amazing but be prepared to be isolated from town its a little bit of a venture however in my opinion worth it. I liked the room but there is no hot water or ac which didnt bother me. I didnt have much good to say about the staff esoecially front desk they were not helpfull we didnt have any sort of helpfull welcome or check out and the food and drinks were completely over priced and not worth the cost luckily there were other restaurants along the beach.

The views of this venues are incredible, just for that is worth it. To arrive to the hotel you have to walk 10 min through the amazing beach of corong corong so is not that hard, they helped us with the backpacks anyway. The room was nice with a terrace in front of the beach. the bathroom renovated and beautiful. As they don't have hot water they facilitate you some if you need it. The breakfast is very good and also the coffee. They are a bit slow to elaborate so better not to be in a hurry.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING EXPERIENCE! Phenomenal staff with amazing service, the most stunning location with the beach/ocean right in your front yard, & an awesome food/drink selection that all tastes great! Zipline/island hopping tours/activities/shops & restaurants are all walking distance from the beautiful resort (front desk helped arrange our tours and shuttles). They also offer their own massages, provide good wifi, and have talented live music during dinner service. Rooms of course were super clean and cozy as well with a TV, and crisp air conditioning. This experience blew us away, I couldn’t recommend the lovely Las Cabanas crew and their establishment more!
