Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For many Filipino travelers, arriving in Manila often means flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). Numerous domestic flights connect major cities like Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo to Manila daily. Airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia offer frequent flights. You can often find competitive fares, especially if you book in advance or during promotional periods. For instance, flights from Cebu to Manila can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 5,000 depending on the season and booking time. Use Traveloka to book flight tickets for the best deals. book flight tickets through Traveloka for the best fares.

If you're traveling from Luzon, particularly from the northern provinces, bus travel is a common and economical option. Numerous bus companies operate routes to Manila's various terminals. A bus journey from Baguio City to Manila, for example, typically takes about 5-6 hours and can cost between PHP 500 to PHP 800. These buses are generally comfortable and offer a scenic way to see the countryside.

For those driving their own vehicles, Manila is accessible via a network of expressways and national highways. Major routes like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect to the city. Toll fees will apply, varying based on the distance traveled. Planning your route using GPS and factoring in potential traffic, especially during peak hours, is advisable for a smoother road trip.

Best Time to Visit Manila

The Philippines experiences a tropical climate, and Manila is no exception. The best time to visit Manila for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity and less rainfall, making it ideal for exploring the city's outdoor attractions and historical sites. Temperatures usually range from 25°C to 35°C.

The period between November and February is particularly pleasant, with cooler temperatures and a comfortable atmosphere for sightseeing. The months of March, April, and May mark the hotter part of the dry season, so be prepared for higher temperatures if you visit then. The wet season, from May to October, brings frequent rain showers, which can sometimes be heavy and cause localized flooding. While this season offers fewer crowds and potentially lower prices, it might disrupt outdoor plans.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Manila is a culinary melting pot, and Filipino cuisine is a highlight. When in the city, you absolutely must try Adobo, the unofficial national dish. This savory and tangy stew, typically made with chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a staple in every Filipino household and restaurant. Its comforting flavors are a taste of home for many.

Another dish to seek out is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup that comes in various forms, often with pork, shrimp, or fish, and flavored with tamarind, guava, or other souring agents. The distinct tanginess is incredibly refreshing, especially on a warm day. It’s a dish that showcases the Filipino palate's love for complex, layered flavors.

For those who enjoy grilled specialties, Lechon, a whole roasted pig with incredibly crispy skin, is a celebratory dish that is worth seeking out. While often reserved for special occasions, many restaurants offer portions of Lechon Kawali (fried pork belly) or Lechon Manok (roasted chicken) that capture some of its deliciousness. The crispy skin and succulent meat are truly a treat.

Don't leave Manila without trying Halo-Halo for dessert. This popular Filipino treat is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's a colorful and refreshing dessert that perfectly caps off any Filipino meal. You can find excellent versions in local eateries and dessert shops across the city.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Magandang umaga" (Good morning) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Filipinos are generally respectful of elders and authority figures. It's also common to be invited into homes, and accepting such invitations is a sign of appreciation. Remember to dress modestly when visiting churches or religious sites.

When it comes to safety in Manila, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, to avoid petty theft. Keep your valuables secure and be cautious of unsolicited offers or overly friendly strangers. For transportation, it's best to use reputable taxi services or ride-sharing apps. In case of emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. It's also a good idea to have the contact details of your hotel readily available.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. Google Maps is indispensable for navigation. Grab is the go-to app for ride-hailing and food delivery, making getting around and finding meals much easier. For communication, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used by Filipinos. Having these apps on your smartphone will significantly streamline your trip.

Super friendly and super convenient in central Manila. For the money, an excellent room with everything you need - clean and spacious and highly recommended. I saw other reviews from people who complained about no lift (or 'elevator' if you're american) but it wasn't an issue for me. I will certainly stay here again.

We stayed for 12 days. Staffs are welcome, polite and helpful. Breakfast is good, the only thing that I would like to say that even though it's clean I still kill almost 12 baby cockroaches, that is why I avoided to leave any garbage on the bin or try not to spill any food on the floor. Besides this problem I still have fun staying with the price I paid it's ok. I would like to thansks to all the staffs in Lessons malate😊

Roach infested. Called from desk a man comes to room and kills a roach with his hand. Roaches on the ceiling, in the shower and as you walk in the door, no offer of getting another room or spraying for the roaches. The newly renovated suite that I paid for was not available. I would not recommend this place to anyone nor would I have this place listed on my hotel website!!!!!

The 2500PHP deposit at checkin was a surprise. Good thing that I had purchased PHP before leaving. The included breakfast is OK, but nothing special. Fuel for the body. There is a turoturo across from the hotel. The fresh lunch meals were good. Mama running the show as a hoot. Hotel staff were young and keen. They depend on tips as most are trainees. Very local neighborhood food house that serves cheap healthier foods than junk chain restaurants. Close to Internet Cafe.

Staff was all friendly. Room is ok hence the price is just right.the only downside is that when u are at the top floor get ready to do an exercise since there is no elevator. Better yet buy everything you need before going up to ur room.

Excellent place to stay if on a short stay or stop over. If the hotel made an effort to fit out rooms with wardrobes so guests could at least hang their cloaths up, that would be a giant leap forward in my book... overall impression was positive....

Its the stairs that are a challenge in he heat lol.

Stayed with husband 3 nights. Breakfast was great . Room was great. So nice hotel. Room very clean with balcony. In a very central area of Manila. Very good stuff. Only it had stairs to 4th floor but stuff helped a lot. Stuff knows English. It has a guard also. 7-11 is near hotel. Very excellent breakfast. Eggs and sausage and fruit salad. Very good hotel. Sure I would visit it again.

This is a complex of one room apartments with en-suite facilities and aircon on five floors. It is located conveniently for Taft Avenue, the LRT, shops, etc. There is an on-going programme of refurbishment, which is a good thing. A quieter aircon would have helped my sleep.
