Your Travel Guide to El Nido as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to El Nido from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach El Nido from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Several airlines operate flights to Lio Airport (ENI) in El Nido. From Manila, flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-friendly options can often be found for around PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 for a round trip if booked strategically.

Alternatively, you can fly into Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS), which is the main airport in Palawan. From Puerto Princesa, you can take a van or bus to El Nido. This journey takes approximately 5 to 6 hours and costs around PHP 500 to PHP 800 for a van. While this option is longer, it can sometimes be more economical if you find cheaper flights to Puerto Princesa. Planning your book flight in advance is highly recommended.

For those who prefer land travel or are coming from nearby provinces, bus services are available to El Nido, primarily from Puerto Princesa. The buses offer a more budget-conscious way to travel, with fares generally ranging from PHP 500 to PHP 800. The journey is long, so be prepared for an extended travel time. Driving your own vehicle is also an option, but it involves a long drive and navigating various road conditions.

Best Time to Visit El Nido

The dry season, from November to May, is generally considered the best time to visit El Nido. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and lower chances of rainfall, making it ideal for island hopping tours, swimming, snorkeling, and other water activities. The peak tourist season falls between December and April, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for flights and accommodation during this period.

The shoulder months, such as November and May, can offer a good balance of favorable weather and fewer tourists. The wet season, from June to October, brings a higher chance of rain and rougher seas, which can sometimes lead to tour cancellations. However, this period also sees fewer visitors and lower prices, which might appeal to budget-conscious travelers who are flexible with their plans and don't mind occasional rain showers.

Food and Dining Near El Nido — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in fresh seafood, and El Nido offers an abundance of it. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are staples, often prepared simply to highlight their natural flavors. Look for local eateries serving "kinilaw," a Filipino ceviche made with raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It's a refreshing and zesty dish perfect for the tropical climate.

Another must-try is "Laing," a Bicolano dish made from dried taro leaves cooked in coconut milk with spices and often small pieces of pork or shrimp. While originating from the Bicol region, its popularity has spread, and you can find delicious versions in El Nido. The creamy texture and subtle spice make it a comforting and flavorful experience.

For a taste of local comfort food, try "Adobo," the Philippines' unofficial national dish. Whether it's chicken or pork, the savory and slightly tangy flavor profile achieved through soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns is universally loved. Many local carinderias and restaurants in El Nido serve their own versions of this classic.

Don't forget to sample "Halo-Halo" for dessert. This popular Filipino treat is a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's the perfect way to cool down and satisfy your sweet tooth after a day of exploring under the sun. Many small stalls and restaurants offer this iconic dessert.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for El Nido

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and respect for elders. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) goes a long way. It's customary to remove your shoes before entering someone's home. When visiting religious sites, dress modestly out of respect. El Nido is generally a safe place for tourists, but it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas.

Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying large amounts of cash. It's advisable to use reputable tour operators for island hopping and to clarify prices before availing any services. For emergencies, note down the local police and hospital contact numbers. Staying informed about local conditions, especially regarding weather, is also important for planning your activities.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is indispensable for navigation. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used. If you're interested in identifying local flora and fauna, an identification app could be useful. Having a currency converter app can also be handy for managing your budget.

The hotel is very basic. It has an IBIS / travel lodge feel to it, it’s very characterless - which is fine if you just want somewhere to use as a base, but I don’t think the price of this hotel (£115 / ~9,200 pesos per night) is reflective of this - I would expect more for this price, so I think it is poor value for money. The room was very small and cramped and not good value for the price, and everything smelled damp, even the bedding smelt really unpleasant! Additionally the room was advertised as having two double beds, but it in fact just had 2 large singles, so you couldn’t share a bed as a couple. The breakfast was ok but the food felt quite poor quality, and again I would just have expected a lot more for the price. Additionally this isn’t even in the town centre, it’s in Corong Corong - whilst this isn’t super inconvenient as it’s a short 10 minute tuktuk ride, I don’t think the price is justifiable for the location.

Every couple of hours, you see the sewer from the hotel go into the ocean right in front of the hotel. It stinks really bad. That’s why you cannot swim in front of their hotel. Also, they have one bike and two treadmills. There are two treadmills that do not work.

The resort has the makings of being exceptional but from the moment you walk in you are greeted with chaos. First day we didn’t have towels or a hairdryer, it took asking 3 people for a towel before we got one, we ended up borrowing a towel from a guest because it took so long - 4 hours. When they serviced our room, they didn’t replace the towels and when we asked for some they were threadbare and ripped. Every time we ate at the restaurant half of the food and drinks menu was not available, we finally found items to order and they took over an hour to come, and some did not come at all. What we did eat at the restaurant was really tasty. When we got our bill half of the items on it were not ours. Resort is a little out of town but only 150p tricycle away and there are restaurants around the resort as well - we were happy with the location. Resort booked our transport to the airport - confirmed all details only to find they had not booked it at all. Roof top pool is stunning!

The location is just the right distance from town. The staff were excellent and it was very good value for money.

Since we check in the Refrigerator wasn’t working. They change it 3x still no working refrigerator. Can you imagine a hot place with No working refrigerator to store cold drinks and food to not to spoil?

The safe locker in the room is Not attached to the wall nor to the cabinet. Therefore, it is deemed useless cause the safe locker can easily be removed and stolen. Also, the television local channels are not viewable.

Not able to order food after 5pm, no towels, no sunbeds (10 total for whole hotel) no electricity for 25 hours, no WiFi, room cleaning did not occur till after 7:30pm, no phone or able to communicate with reception so having to go down 8 floors via 2 lifts to communicate issues, no chairs on balcony, no hot water……. Terrible attitude of FOH.
