Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For many Filipinos, Manila is a familiar destination, but for those coming from other regions, reaching the capital is often done via air travel. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) from key cities such as Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo. Fares can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 or more, depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets. Travel time typically ranges from 1 to 2 hours.

If you prefer a more economical and scenic route, inter-island bus travel is also an option from certain parts of Luzon. Major bus terminals in Cubao and Pasay serve as hubs for these long-distance journeys. Fares are considerably lower, often ranging from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500 for overnight trips. While this takes significantly longer, often 10-15 hours or more, it allows you to see more of the country.

For those driving from nearby provinces in Luzon, expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) provide direct access to Metro Manila. Toll fees vary depending on the entry and exit points but are generally a reasonable expense for the convenience of direct travel. Planning your route using GPS apps is recommended to navigate the city's complex road network efficiently.

Best Time to Visit Manila

The ideal time to visit Manila for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, making it perfect for exploring the city's outdoor attractions and enjoying its vibrant street life. Temperatures are warm, averaging around 28-32 degrees Celsius, so light clothing is essential.

The months of December to February are particularly pleasant, with slightly cooler temperatures and lower humidity, making it a peak tourist season. If you prefer to avoid the largest crowds and potentially find better hotel rates, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or late April. The rainy season, from May to October, can bring heavy downpours and typhoons, which might disrupt travel plans and outdoor activities.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Manila is a culinary melting pot, and exploring its food scene is a highlight for any Filipino traveler. Near Manila Lotus Hotel, you'll find opportunities to savor classic Filipino dishes. Adobo, a savory dish of meat braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and black peppercorns, is a national favorite and a must-try. Look for restaurants that offer both chicken and pork versions for a true taste.

Another essential dish is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth and your choice of meat or seafood, along with various vegetables. Its comforting, tangy flavor is perfect for any weather. For those who enjoy grilled specialties, Lechon, a whole roasted pig with crispy skin, is a celebratory dish often found in restaurants and markets, offering a rich and indulgent experience.

Don't leave Manila without trying Halo-Halo, a popular Filipino dessert made with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It's a refreshing treat that perfectly caps off a meal. Exploring the local eateries and food stalls around Ermita and nearby districts will offer authentic flavors and a genuine taste of Filipino cuisine. You can also book attraction tours that include food crawls for a guided culinary journey.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Magandang umaga/hapon/gabi" (Good morning/afternoon/evening) goes a long way. Respect for elders is paramount, so use "po" and "opo" when speaking to older individuals. Be mindful of personal space in crowded areas and always ask permission before taking photos of people.

When it comes to safety, Manila is generally safe for tourists, but like any large city, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Avoid displaying expensive jewelry or large amounts of cash openly. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, especially at night. Keep your valuables secure and be cautious of petty theft in crowded markets or on public transport. In case of emergencies, dial 117 for the national emergency hotline.

To enhance your travel experience, several apps are highly recommended. Waze or Google Maps are essential for navigation, helping you find your way around Manila's complex streets and avoid traffic. Ride-sharing apps like Grab are convenient for booking transportation. For communication, ensure you have a local SIM card or an international roaming plan. Traveloka itself is indispensable for booking accommodations, flights, and activities, making your trip planning seamless.

A little dated as with many hotels in the Ermita/Malate area but a good location, friendly staff and good restaurant make the Manila Lotus an easy choice, especially for the price. My only quibble is having no top sheet but only one blanket in addition to the bottom sheet.

I didn't stay at this hotel, I moved out 2 hours after arriving. The room was dirty and ugly, the bathroom was moldy and insects were running around. In addition, all the plugs in the wall were broken and it was not possible to install the charger in it because it fell out of all the plugs, the holes were so big and worn. The pillows and sheets looked like they had not been washed, they had an unpleasant smell. When I came to the room, I wanted to wash my hands, but the soap dispenser was empty. I would give 0 points if I could.

Another great stay at Lotus. This was my third time staying at Lotus in the last 9 months. Breakfast is great and the location is good. Can’t beat this place for the price.

Walking distance to restaurants and a nice mall which includes grocery. Close to US embassy. Breakfast is hit or miss but give you several options including an omelette bar. Staff is friendly.

The first room we were brought to had not been cleaned and smelled like smoke. After complaining they moved us to a room that had been cleaned and it was slightly better. Though breakfast was bland and not enjoyable. Also no water/napkins were provided in the room.

Not worth the price. Front desk people are annoying. Not professionals.

A little dated as with many hotels in the Ermita/Malate area but a good location, friendly staff and good restaurant make the Manila Lotus an easy choice, especially for the price. My only quibble is having no top sheet but only one blanket in addition to the bottom sheet.

The staff at Manila Lotus were attentive and warm. I enjoyed our conversations and they made my visit to Manila memorable. Would have liked to stay another night.
