This is a great hostel. Very clean, right on the beach, incredible service. It did get rowdy at night, but was not a trashy vibe at all - fine if you were not trying to party. We are a couple in our 30s and enjoyed ourselves.

Your Travel Guide to El Nido as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to El Nido from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach El Nido from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Flights typically land at El Nido Airport (Lio Airport) or Puerto Princesa International Airport. From Manila, flights to El Nido can range from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 or more, depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

If you fly into Puerto Princesa, you can then take a van or bus to El Nido town. These journeys typically cost between PHP 500 to PHP 800 and take around 5 to 6 hours. This option is often more budget-friendly for travelers coming from cities without direct flights to El Nido. Buses offer a more economical choice, while vans provide a slightly faster but often more cramped ride.

For those who enjoy road trips, driving from Manila to El Nido is possible but extremely long, spanning over 24 hours of driving time, often requiring an overnight stop in places like Batangas or further south. This route involves several ferry crossings and is generally not recommended for most travelers due to the time and effort involved. It's a journey best suited for those with ample time and a desire for an extensive overland adventure.

Best Time to Visit El Nido

The dry season, from November to May, is generally considered the best time to visit El Nido. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and minimal rainfall, which are ideal conditions for island hopping, swimming, snorkeling, and other water activities. The peak tourist season falls between December and April, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and tours.

The wet season, from June to October, brings a higher chance of rain and occasional typhoons. While you might find fewer crowds and lower prices during this period, some tours and activities may be canceled due to weather conditions. However, even during the wet season, there are often periods of sunshine, and the landscapes are lush and green. For a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or May.

Food and Dining Near El Nido — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Filipino cuisine is diverse and delicious, and El Nido offers a chance to savor local flavors. When in El Nido, be sure to try Kinilaw, a Filipino ceviche made with fresh raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It’s a refreshing appetizer that perfectly complements the tropical climate. You can find excellent Kinilaw at many local eateries and restaurants, often prepared with the catch of the day.

Another must-try is La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo, but popular across the Philippines. It features a rich pork broth, noodles, pork offal, and is topped with crushed chicharon and garlic. While not native to El Nido, its comforting flavors make it a welcome dish, especially on cooler evenings. Look for it in local carinderias for an authentic taste.

Seafood is, of course, a highlight in El Nido. Grilled fish, squid, and prawns are readily available and incredibly fresh. Many restaurants offer a "paluto" style where you can choose your seafood and have it cooked to your preference, often grilled or in a garlic butter sauce. This is a fantastic way to enjoy the bounty of the sea.

Don't forget to sample some local fruits like ripe mangoes and coconuts. Freshly squeezed mango juice is a delightful treat, and a young coconut water is the perfect way to rehydrate. For a sweet ending, try Halo-Halo, a popular Filipino dessert made with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It’s a colorful and satisfying concoction.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for El Nido

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and respect for elders. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting and a smile go a long way. It's customary to use "po" and "opo" when speaking to elders or those in authority as a sign of respect. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service. Be mindful of dress codes when visiting churches or more conservative areas.

El Nido is generally a safe place for travelers, but it's always wise to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded areas. Be aware of your surroundings, particularly at night. It's recommended to use reputable transport services and agree on fares beforehand. For any emergencies, local police can be reached at their respective hotlines.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is indispensable for navigation. For communication, apps like WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used. You might also find travel apps that offer local guides or currency converters helpful. Having a local SIM card can also ensure you stay connected easily.

When exploring the waters, always follow the instructions of your tour guides and boat operators regarding safety. Respect marine life and avoid touching coral reefs. Understanding and respecting local customs will ensure a more pleasant and enriching trip for everyone involved.

I don't usually write negative reviews but I had to with this hostel. First off, the staff were great, no complaints there. I never stayed in the dorm area as they were all booked so no comment there. I had a loft style room. The stairs up to it were very steep. I can see someone falling on the way down if they've had a few too many. One of the steps was very rotted out and felt like it may give way any day. I get we are in a somewhat remote area of Palawan but the power and wifi kept going off. With no cell coverage, kind of a bummer when trying to arrange your flights etc. My last gripe was their food menu. Everytime I wanted to order anything, "Sorry sir we are all out" The amount of times I heard this for myself and other guests. Whoever is in charge of the food inventory needs to do better. You can walk to any other place on the beach and they have everything available on their menu. I would stay here again but would have lower expectations for certain things.

For a hostel it is a good choice, although we were there during off season and it was incredibly noisy. I can only imagine it during peak season. The reception staff were friendly and helpful but the cleaners and security guy were noisy at all hours. The onsite restaurant was awful, we had one meal and never ate there again. Thankfully the hostel is in a perfect location, on the most beautiful beach with lots of nice places to eat and drink nearby.

They should have a warning 'We party loud through the night to 3am nightly'. They also should change ordering system so you can add up a bill and pay once; guess they don't trust their guests.

Hi, my name is Lanfranco Paliotti and I stayed with my wife in your hostel for 7 days and I am writing to tell you that we could not stay longer. Our stay ruined our vacation in the Philippines. We checked out 1 day early. We tried to communicate but the girl with glasses at the reception was so rude from the beginning that we decided to leave. Three days ago, the light switch and the fan broke just before going to bed. There was a party going on in the hostel so there was no receptionist or maintenance available we had to sleep with the lights on to make the fan work, tormented by mosquitoes and without air and my wife felt sick. The Teepee was full of mosquitoes and sandflies. The next day, we asked for the fan light to be fixed early in the morning. When we returned at 7:00 PM, it had not been fixed yet due to the absence of the general manager. I actually had to say I would fix it myself... so maintenance came. Finally after a long wait of two hours it was fixed (only the fan and not the Light). All our experiences are negative. We waited 3 days for the tour of the islands, so that we could get to the number of 8 people. (the staff was not engaging at all) So the days passed, we could not book a trip elsewhere because we had been notified too late. When we finally got to the number of 8, instead of leaving at 9, we left at 11:45. We waited for 2 and a half hours. On the tour the person in charge was absent and not at all engaging, unfortunately he was not able to swim (th

To be noted that there is no road the hole way to the hostel entrance so you must carry your luggage on rhe beach like 5-10 minutes before u are there so make sure you travel here light if you don’t want to struggle with that Private rooms was much better.

This is a great hostel. Very clean, right on the beach, incredible service. It did get rowdy at night, but was not a trashy vibe at all - fine if you were not trying to party. We are a couple in our 30s and enjoyed ourselves.

Doorm rooms = waaaay 2 hot! Just small fans on top of beds ,not really helpful for the rest of the room. No pressure in showers , sometimes also no water coming out at all. No electricity from time to time. To be noted that there is no road the hole way to the hostel entrance so you must carry your luggage on rhe beach like 5-10 minutes before u are there so make sure you travel here light if you don’t want to struggle with that Private rooms was much better. Also hot but not as hot as dorms. Henry was really helpful with some

Abends immer was los. Super Stimmung jeden Abend und sehr nette und lustige Leute kennengelernt. Zudem super Location direkt am Strand! Allerdings viel zu teuer für das was das Hostel an Ausstattung und Komfort bietet.
