Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers, reaching Manila is a familiar journey, with numerous options available from various parts of the archipelago. If you're coming from the Visayas or Mindanao, flying is the most efficient method. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila. Fares can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 or more, depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets. Travel time typically ranges from 1 to 2 hours.

From Luzon's major cities and provinces, bus travel is a popular and economical choice. Numerous bus terminals in Metro Manila serve routes from Northern Luzon (e.g., Baguio, Laoag) and Southern Luzon (e.g., Batangas, Naga). Bus fares generally range from PHP 500 to PHP 1,500, with travel times varying significantly from 4 hours to over 10 hours, depending on the origin and traffic conditions. Major bus companies include Victory Liner, Genesis Transport, and DLTB Co.

Driving to Manila is also an option for those coming from nearby provinces. Major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect to Metro Manila. Toll fees can add up, so it's wise to factor this into your budget. For example, a trip from Pampanga might incur around PHP 300-500 in toll fees, with a driving time of approximately 2-3 hours, again heavily dependent on traffic.

Best Time to Visit Manila

Manila experiences a tropical climate, characterized by two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season, typically from November to April, offers the most pleasant weather for exploring the city. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity and comfortable temperatures, making it ideal for walking around and visiting outdoor attractions. The cooler months within this period, from December to February, are particularly favored by many.

The wet season runs from May to October and is marked by higher humidity and frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours. While this season can bring occasional disruptions, it also means fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices. If you plan to visit during the wet season, it's advisable to carry an umbrella or raincoat and to have indoor activities planned as alternatives for rainy days. Regardless of the season, Manila's attractions are accessible, and the city's energy is constant.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Manila is complete without indulging in its rich culinary landscape. A characteristic Filipino dish you must try is Adobo. Whether it's chicken or pork, the savory and slightly tangy flavor profile, achieved through soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a national favorite. Many local eateries and even some restaurants near Maine City will offer their own delicious versions of this classic dish.

Another must-try is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup that is incredibly comforting. Made with tamarind broth and a variety of meats (like pork, beef, or fish) and vegetables, its distinct sourness is a unique taste experience. It’s perfect for a hearty meal, especially on a cooler or rainy day. Look for carinderias or Filipino restaurants that pride themselves on authentic home-style cooking.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is an iconic Filipino dessert that is a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It's a refreshing treat, especially in Manila's warm climate. You can find excellent Halo-Halo at various dessert shops and restaurants throughout the city. Exploring the food scene is a significant part of the travel experience, and Manila offers endless opportunities to discover these flavors.

Don't forget to sample some fresh seafood if you have the chance. Manila's proximity to coastal areas means that fresh catches are often available. Grilled fish, shrimp, and squid are popular choices, often served with a simple soy sauce and calamansi dip. Exploring local markets or restaurants specializing in seafood can lead to some truly delicious discoveries.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor and a smile go a long way. It's customary to use "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in positions of authority as a sign of respect. While English is widely spoken, learning a few basic Tagalog phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) can be appreciated.

When it comes to safety, like any large city, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure and be mindful of pickpockets, especially in crowded areas like markets or public transportation. It's advisable to avoid displaying expensive items openly. For emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. Having the contact numbers for your embassy or consulate readily available is also a good precaution.

To enhance your travel experience in Manila, several apps can be very useful. Grab is indispensable for ride-hailing and food delivery, offering a convenient way to get around and dine. Google Maps is essential for navigation, helping you find your way through the city's streets and public transport routes. For communication, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used for staying in touch. Consider downloading a currency converter app if you plan on doing a lot of shopping or dining out.

It's cheap but the cabinet is broken. You must fix it so that there is no inconvenience to your client. My husband is not comfortable because I requested 2nd floor and they can no longer accommodate. There is no elevator so need to walk. So if you want to exercise you can ride here but if you come from stressful transactions and you want to relax he is not recommended. Thanks.

The staffs were actually nice, approachable and good. But there 's no elevator, my room is at 3rd floor and I got luggage but they helped me with it. But it will be hard for those who have luggages. Place is quiet but no TV but they explained that they're working on it and no signal for a week. It 's okay I'm just there to sleep to wait for my next flight. When I got inside my room, there 's a used mug on table like I don't know if they clean good the room every after customer.

The room looked exactly like the pictures, but there were some insects roaming around and the smell was not good but tolerable. The telecommunication network signal is poor, you have to go outside the hotel to catch up the signal. Wi-Fi is good, TV is operational, and air-condition is operational. The receptionists were friendly, and accommodating. Complimentary drinking water, and coffee were available upon request for staying longer. There are CCTV monitoring 24/7, and guard on duty for our security purposes.

The place wasn’t even sound proof. Can’t sleep because of all the noises coming from outside. People chatting. Someone cleaning the other room and someones drilling the wall. It’s not really comfortable. We requested for a higher floor but we were assigned to 2nd floor

The room provided to us seems not yet ready. There were no footrugs, since no bidet in their bathroom, there were no available pale and tabo. All these were provided only after we requested. The bedsheets and pillow cases are colored dirtywhite seems overused already. Both cabinet floorings are dilapidated.

The staffs were friendly and accommodating. Rooms were fine. I just don't like the towels. It's not really white, it's literally dirty white and won't absorb water. They should change their towels. I just forgot to take pictures.

The location is good near to lrt, but there 's still need to walk at street. Reception and staff are friendly but I'm surprise when I'm enter bathroom there 's dead cockroach, there 's hot and cold eater dispenser every level but the place have no lift, so you need to walk using stairs. Wifi also is good, but TV channel is moderate luckily can open youtube or browser from TV so can surf other channel by yourself. Overall 3.9/5 for my 3 night stays.

I booked and requested 3 weeks ahead for ground floor or first floor for I am pregnant. But they give me the highest floor (4th). The night shift receptionist was not as nice as the girl in day shift.
