Your Travel Guide to Bacolod City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Bacolod City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Bacolod City from Manila is most efficiently done by air. Several airlines operate daily flights from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to Bacolod-Silay International Airport (BSB). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but budget-friendly options can often be found for around PHP 2,000 to PHP 4,000 for a one-way trip during off-peak periods.

For those preferring a more economical, albeit longer, journey, bus travel is an option. Buses depart from various terminals in Metro Manila, such as Cubao or Pasay, heading to Bacolod. This trip involves a ferry crossing, usually from Batangas or Lucena to Dumangas, Iloilo, followed by a land trip to Bacolod. The total travel time can range from 18 to 24 hours, with fares typically falling between PHP 1,500 to PHP 2,500.

Driving to Bacolod City is also possible for adventurous travelers with their own vehicles. This route also involves ferry crossings and extensive driving through Luzon and parts of the Visayas. While it offers the most flexibility, it is a time-consuming option and requires careful planning regarding routes, ferry schedules, and potential toll fees.

Best Time to Visit Bacolod City

The ideal time to visit Bacolod City for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is typically sunny with lower chances of rain, making it perfect for outdoor activities, exploring the city's attractions, and enjoying its beaches or nearby islands. The cool, dry months from November to February are particularly pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 24°C to 30°C.

The period from March to May can get quite warm, with temperatures often exceeding 32°C, so it's advisable to stay hydrated and seek shade during midday. While the wet season (June to October) brings occasional rainfall, it also means fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices. However, heavy rains can sometimes disrupt travel plans or limit outdoor activities. The MassKara Festival, held every October, is a major event that draws significant crowds, so if you plan to visit during this time, book your accommodation and flights well in advance.

Food and Dining Near Bacolod City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Bacolod City is renowned as the "Sugarbowl of the Philippines" and is equally famous for its culinary delights, particularly its chicken inasal. This grilled chicken dish, marinated in a mixture of calamansi, pepper, and annatto oil, is a smoky, savory masterpiece best enjoyed with garlic rice and a side of vinegar dipping sauce. Manokan Country, a strip of open-air eateries near SM City Bacolod, is the go-to place for an authentic chicken inasal experience.

Another must-try is Piaya, a flat, unleavened bread filled with muscovado sugar and sometimes yema or ube. It’s a popular pasalubong (take-home gift) and a sweet treat that perfectly complements a cup of coffee. You can find freshly baked piaya in many local bakeries and souvenir shops throughout the city.

For those with a sweet tooth, Cansi is a local delicacy you shouldn't miss. It's a rich, sour beef soup, similar to bulalo but with a distinct sourness from batuan fruit. The tender beef and flavorful broth make it a comforting and satisfying meal. Many local carinderias and restaurants serve this hearty soup.

Finally, don't leave Bacolod without trying Napoleones, a layered puff pastry filled with custard cream and topped with a caramelized sugar glaze. This sweet pastry is a delightful dessert or snack, offering a flaky texture and a creamy, sweet filling. It’s a perfect example of the sweet treats that make Bacolod's culinary scene so appealing.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Bacolod City

Bacolod City is known for its friendly and hospitable people, often referred to as "Bacolodnons." A common greeting is "Hello" or "Good morning/afternoon," and a smile goes a long way. While English and Tagalog are widely understood, learning a few basic Hiligaynon phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) can be appreciated. Respect for elders and local customs is important.

When it comes to safety, Bacolod City is generally considered a safe place for travelers. However, like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Avoid displaying expensive items openly and keep your valuables secure. It’s also a good practice to use reputable transportation services. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911.

For navigating the city and staying connected, several apps can be very useful. Google Maps is essential for directions and finding points of interest. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are available for convenient transport. For foodies, apps like Zomato or local food blogs can help discover dining spots. Staying informed with local news apps can also be beneficial.

I am very satisfied with my stay. Good location. Just 1 block away from the market. The room is big and enough space for 2 -3pax. Clean comfort and shower room with water heater and toiletries. Aircon is functioning well. And considering it is a budget accomodation, they give me free coffee and cup noodles as complimentary.

That old woman (mid 40-50) was not so accommodating and welcoming to us at all. She didn't even smile when we arrived. The bed sheets and blanket caused us itchiness and rashes on our skin as well. We asked if we could have another bed sheets, at first she didn't give us because they’ll change it the next day but we can no longer wait for that at all since we were suffering rashes already, so on our 2nd try while showing off our skin that we got redness and rashes already she handed over 2 sheets without new blanket. I hope she’ll be more friendly and accommodating to guests.

Room they gave us was unfinished, paint is still fresh, the floor epoxy was sticky. A lot of cockroaches and other insects in the room and bathroom. They did give us a new bigger room to compensate but there are still a lot of insects coming from the bathroom. Wifi has no internet connection.

More than what we expected! One of the best accommodations I had so far. We stayed at the 2nd floor and I didn't mind the wooden floor. It used to be a house back in the 80's which I love since I grew up in an ancestral house. The room was spacious and spotless especially the bathroom with a working hot & cold shower which is shocking for its price. Free coffee and cup noodles everyday too. Kuya Joel, the caretaker, is very friendly and helpful. Just don't hesitate to ask him whatever you need because he's been there for decades. Thank you for a quality service. Would definitely come back soon!

Large and adequate room. There are no surplus amenities such as restaurants, pools or spa's that would cost extra and have no value to someone merely wanting a place to sleep. The price was very reasonable. I doubt that many rooms are available, but for someone that is not interested in "resort style" surroundings, this is a great place.

We liked it. Planning to book again for the Masskara Festival this October. It’s very affordable for our 5d4n stay! It only cost us around 2600 php. We booked an air-conditioned room w two beds. The CR was clean and the heater works well. We checked-in early since we arrived at 6 am in BCD. They will just ask you to pay an extra 100 php as long as there are available rooms already. Also, the room also included water, coffee, cup noodles and cups for 2 people good for 5 days. It’s sufficient for the duration of our stay since most of the time we will be eating out. Overall it was an awesome stay!

Pros: - Super room size given that they are cheap room rates. You can fall inside. - Complimentary cup noodles and coffee for 2. - No early check-in problem. - Hot and cold drinking water available with their front office. - Accesible location - High speed wi-fi. Cons: - Mejo creepy that entrance into the rooms. - There are often no people at their entrance / gate / front office, you have to make a call or use the doorbell. - Lack of power outlets for gadgets and stuffs. - Cool your P50 deposit for your keys. 1 for your room, and 1 for the gate. - Hot and cold shower works when I first triny, then the actual one will be used, not working, weird. - Room is cool, low hp A / C for such a large room. - There is unknown door in our room which is blocked by our bed. - You heard that there was a shower in the adjacent room, the bathroom of the adjacent room that was unknown in our room.

Nice accommodation since they provide free coffee and cup noodles. I don't like the smelly bed but they have a hot water for the shower, clean floor and free wifi (not so strong signal though).

For the budget, it's okay. Accessible, neat area, just clean room. In water supply, water is relatively weak.

A good place to stay for travelers on the go. A budget friendly hotel. Very accommodating to our inquiries asking about directions, and they have a complimentary cup noodles and coffee. Looking forward to stay again.
