If you are a budding young corporate traveler whose territory is Asia, you should read this.
Why the title? Because I have never regretted my choice of hotel chain, Shangri-La when I started my business traveling 10 years ago. Shangri-La may not be as big as the other luxury chains, but they are definitely the most consistent in terms of service and most rewarding in terms of loyalty. Why is this possible? It is the sense of pride of their people in being able to work for Shangri-La, they will serve you with passion and heart and takes your feedback seriously. If you are loyal to them, they will go out of the way to help you. Its not everyday you get the GM and correctly, Area GM of the Shangri-La Philippines at the door to greet you like an old friend. And Mr Alain Borgers did just that and together with his team including the Hotel Manager Mr Udo and Assistant Manager Ms Chi-Angeles. They did not do it because I am a Diamond member. They did it because they know that I am a returning customer, which is why they show you their loyalty and their sincerity. The staff were tremendous and impeccable in service and this was despite them hosting an Asean meeting during my stay In my opinion Makati Shangri-Laalso has the best breakfast buffet in all the hotels I stayed in, and I have stayed in more than a hundred hotels. Salmon sashimi and sushi in the morning! Right now, together with Singapore Airlines, they give u a jumpstart to Golden Circle Jade status and Krisflyer Silver. Its the best of both worlds. Take advantage of it. You will never regret it.

Warm and welcoming
I loved my stay at the Shangri-La Makati. I had read some reviews mentioning it was an older hotel and I usually love brand new, but this was booked for a work trip and I couldn't have been happier. The staff (front desk, Sage Bar, Pool staff, gym) were all incredibly nice and offering instant help with any request you might make. The gym is one of the best hotel gyms I have ever seen, large and well equipped. The spa is very pretty and well priced. The rooms are large and comfortable with an excellent desk set up and plenty of outlets for charging.

Good breakfast, looked a bit dated but ok
It's one of the most popular 5 star hotels in Metro Manila hence my expectations were very high but I was slightly disappointed. The room and hallway looked dated. Of course the room was clean and nice, it just did not feel like the 5 star room I thought it would be. I thought it was way too expensive given the amenities. The lobby was big but it was chaotic. I remember it being really grand and elegant back in 2004 but it no longer appeared that way now. It just paled in comparison with other hotels I've stayed at and they were not even 5 star hotels. Overall it was still a good stay. It just did not meet the standard I expected relative to the price. The breaksfast buffet was really good though. Wide and high quality selection.

For a very old hotel, this one is in top shape. Everything looks beautiful and expensive. The marble is nice, the chandeliers nice - the lobby is almost as pretty as the one in Kuala Lumpur. The Horizon Club is really great because of the staff (especially May, Natasha and Raymond) and the only minus is the low ceiling but maybe that's because the hotel is old. I also feel sad that there was no champagne during the evening cocktails which is not fair since I saw a pic online with Veuve somewhere during cocktails at their Horizon Club (but maybe this was just during my stay). I notice this with club lounge cocktails in the Philippines - they serve a lot of hard liquor and not enough light sparkling wines. What's really special about the club lounge is that they serve hakaw at breakfast - sadly, the hakaw is not available in Circles unlike in High Street Cafe in Shangri-la at the Fort where both hakaw and siomai are available during breakfast. I enjoyed the saltwater pool and would definitely come back soon. I also noticed that while the toilet stuff in Shang at the Fort is 50 ml those in Shang Makati are only 30 ml - but this may be because Shang Makati is cheaper. I was very glad that they were especially kind to my parents who are old and partially infirm.
