Your Travel Guide to Samal Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Samal Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

The most efficient way to reach Samal Island from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. You'll need to book a flight to Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO) in Davao City. Numerous airlines operate daily flights, with fares varying depending on the season and how far in advance you book. Expect travel times of around 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours for direct flights.

Once you land at DVO, you will then need to take a short taxi or car ride to a ferry terminal that serves Samal Island. The most common terminals are in Sasa or Km. 11. From there, you can take a ferry or a smaller boat (like a 'bangka') to various points on Samal Island. The ferry ride itself is relatively short, typically around 15-20 minutes, offering scenic views of the Davao Gulf.

For those who prefer land travel or are coming from nearby Mindanao cities, bus services are available to Davao City. From Davao City, you would follow the same ferry route to Samal Island. While this option is more time-consuming, it can be a more budget-friendly choice. Remember to book your flight and other travel arrangements well in advance for the best deals.

Best Time to Visit Samal Island

Samal Island enjoys a tropical climate, meaning it's warm and humid throughout the year. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities, beach lounging, and island hopping.

The period between June and October often brings more frequent rain showers, characteristic of the Philippines' monsoon season. While these rains can sometimes be heavy, they are often short-lived, and you can still enjoy your trip. However, if your priority is consistently sunny weather for beach activities, aim for the dry season. Traveling during the shoulder months, like November or May, can offer a good balance of favorable weather and fewer crowds.

Food and Dining Near Samal Island — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in its rich culinary landscape, and Samal Island offers delightful local flavors. A must-try is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, usually tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers, offering a tangy and refreshing taste that perfectly complements the tropical heat.

Another local favorite you should seek out is Grilled Liempo, or pork belly. Marinated in a mixture of soy sauce, calamansi, garlic, and pepper, then grilled to perfection over charcoal, it's a smoky, savory, and slightly sweet dish that’s incredibly satisfying. Pair it with a side of garlic rice and a dipping sauce of soy sauce and vinegar for the ultimate Filipino comfort food experience.

For seafood lovers, fresh grilled fish is abundant and a fantastic choice. Many local eateries and resorts offer a variety of freshly caught fish, simply seasoned and grilled. Enjoy it with a squeeze of calamansi and a side of steamed rice. Don't forget to try Lato, a type of seaweed salad that's crunchy, salty, and packed with oceanic flavor, often served with a simple vinaigrette.

Consider also trying La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo but popular nationwide. It's a flavorful broth filled with pork, shrimp, and various toppings, perfect for a comforting meal. Exploring the local eateries will introduce you to these and many other delicious Filipino dishes.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Samal Island

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When visiting Samal Island, embracing this spirit by being respectful of local customs is appreciated. Always greet people with a smile, and if invited into someone's home, it's customary to bring a small token of appreciation. Learning a few basic Tagalog or Cebuano phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) can go a long way.

Safety is generally good on Samal Island, but like any travel destination, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded areas or on public transport. It's advisable to stick to well-lit and populated areas at night. For emergencies, know the local police and hospital contact numbers, which can usually be obtained from your accommodation.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for finding your way around. For communication, ensure you have messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. Keep in mind this is a party resort. The staff and food were excellent. Grounds (area) were very clean. My room was very clean. My only concern was the band stage that went from 6pm to midnight everyday but Saturday that went from 6pm to 2am. Would I book the resort again that would be a definite YES. I had a great time !!!

Where do I begin? 1. We arrive early so knew we would have to wait for our room. BUT…they actually CHARGED us to enter the resort while we wait! Really?? Eventually they did give us the fee back as I complained to mgmt about that. Mgmt said they were sorry and shouldn’t have happened. 2. No hot water. We asked them twice to please fix it. No one ever came. 3. Very bad wifi. Even though online they claim to have wifi. We asked front desk and they admitted that wifi is very bad. 4. We made a point NOT to book a weekend as per the reviews, music is very loud. Regardless, they had a party every night until 1am. The bass is so loud that the doors actually shook and made noise. After two days we said no more and left. 5. They ask what time you want breakfast the next day. Who knows? I said maybe 830am or so? I don’t know. We went down to eat at 845am and were handed two plates with plastic over them. Stone cold. They simply make them ahead of time. They refused to give us a refund for the two days we didn’t stay but said “so sorry” about how loud the music was. It’s a party resort so if you want actual sleep at night, go someplace else. They sell day passes and cater to those people and not so much the actual hotel guests. You won’t be able to use the chairs by the water as the day pass people take them all. Seriously go someplace else.
