The location was spectacular. The staff were very friendly and helpful, we were pleasantly surprised upon our arrival to get upgraded to a Sea/Mountain view villa, and the accommodations were very nice! This definitely enhanced our 7-day stay. Housekeeping were on top of things, and kept our room clean and tidy. Had one small issue with the hot water disappearing one day, but as soon as we notified staff they were on it and fixed it immediately. The only area in which our experience would have been enhanced is an expansion of the menu. All of the Filipino dishes were very good, but the menu was somewhat limited, particularly for breakfast. If your stay is only a couple of days this likely won’t be an issue, but for a week a bit more variety would be nice. However, this was not enough to take my rating down to a 4. There are too many other great things that make the Matinloc Island Resort well worth visiting. We would definitely return for a second visit. Will try to post a few pics if I can once posted to Expedia. Words alone don’t do the place justice.

Your Travel Guide to El Nido as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to El Nido from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to El Nido from Manila or other major Philippine cities is most efficiently done by air. Direct flights are available to Lio Airport (ENI) in El Nido, typically costing between PHP 4,000 to PHP 8,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets. The flight duration is approximately 1.5 hours. From Lio Airport, a short van ride of about 20-30 minutes will take you to El Nido town proper.

Alternatively, you can fly into Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS), which often has more frequent and cheaper flights. From Puerto Princesa, you can take a van or bus to El Nido town. This journey takes around 5 to 6 hours and typically costs between PHP 600 to PHP 1,000 for a one-way ticket. While longer, this option can be more budget-friendly for travelers.

For those who prefer land travel or are coming from nearby provinces, bus services are available to El Nido, though this is a significantly longer journey. Driving your own vehicle is also an option, but be prepared for a long drive, especially from Manila, which can take over 24 hours. The roads leading to El Nido have improved, but the final stretch can still be challenging.

Best Time to Visit El Nido

The ideal time to visit El Nido for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to May. Within this period, the months of March to May are particularly favorable, offering sunny skies, calm seas, and excellent visibility for island hopping and water activities. The weather is consistently warm, perfect for enjoying the beaches and lagoons.

The shoulder months, such as November and February, can also be excellent choices. You might experience slightly fewer crowds compared to the peak season while still enjoying good weather conditions. This can offer a more relaxed experience and potentially better rates for flights and accommodation.

The wet season, from June to October, brings a higher chance of rainfall and occasional typhoons. While you might find lower prices during this time, the weather can be unpredictable, potentially disrupting island tours and outdoor activities. However, if you are flexible and don't mind occasional rain showers, visiting during the off-peak season can still be rewarding, offering a different, often greener, perspective of the landscape.

Food and Dining Near El Nido — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

El Nido offers a delightful culinary scene that reflects Filipino flavors with a coastal twist. A must-try dish is fresh grilled seafood, readily available in many local eateries. Imagine succulent fish, prawns, and squid, often caught daily and grilled to perfection, served with rice and a side of soy sauce and calamansi. It’s a simple yet incredibly satisfying meal that embodies the taste of the sea.

Another local specialty you should seek out is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, usually tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. The tangy and spicy flavors are incredibly refreshing, especially in the tropical heat. It’s a perfect appetizer or light meal that showcases the freshness of local ingredients.

Don't leave El Nido without trying La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo but popular across the Philippines. This rich broth filled with pork, shrimp, and various toppings is a comforting and flavorful dish. For dessert, indulge in Halo-Halo, the ultimate Filipino summer treat. This colorful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream is a delightful way to end any meal.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for El Nido

When visiting El Nido, it’s important to be mindful of local customs. Filipinos are generally warm and hospitable, so a polite greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) goes a long way. Respect local traditions and dress modestly when visiting religious sites or interacting with elders. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service.

Safety in El Nido is generally good, but like any tourist destination, it’s wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. It’s advisable to drink bottled water to avoid stomach issues. For emergencies, note down the local police and hospital contact numbers. The Philippine National Police (PNP) hotline is a good general number to have.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps can help you find your way around El Nido town and identify points of interest. A translation app can be useful if you encounter locals who speak dialects you're unfamiliar with. Finally, having the Traveloka app on your phone is crucial for managing your bookings, finding last-minute deals, and accessing travel information easily.

Room was clean, staff was super nice and accommodating although it took 45 to 60 minutes to produce a meal. The food tasted pretty good, portions were adequate but the menu somewhat limited. They served no alcohol. The beach was very nice and sorroundings look a little rundown. The facilities need some work.

The property is "ok." Rooms were decent and bed was comfy. A/C worked well but the temperature in February was very nice that you really didn't need it. Food was pretty decent but you do have to pay for it (except for breakfast). Overall, I had a relaxing time but I think I will try another island resort property.

Staff was wonderful. Food options could be more wide. Breakfast can have more Filipino pastries or sweets.

I made a mistake booking this hotel. I thought it was Miniloc. But, I was pleasantly surprised and extremely happy with the customer service and persistent attention to details. Russel was super helpful. John was extremely cautious and careful in handling senior citizens during the lagoon tour. EJ was so pleasant during the welcome tour. Most of all, Mr James trained and managed his staff well. I will definitely be back with more guests. Highly recommend

Horrible overall from the moment of the airport arrival. They messed up the airport shuttle and pick up. We arrived at 2:15pm I’m travelling with my 72 year old mother. We were told by the manager we could order and eat even if the kitchen was closed. They took our order an hour later they told us what we ordered was not available. We had to beg for food. Another hour in we got the wrong order. The next day we book the tour which is at least 5 times pricier than the same tour booked in town since we wanted convenience. The boat broke down and we got stuck in the middle of the bay after being given the wrong information of what’s included and wrong start time. They said 9 am at 8:10 they called that we were late. I asked for no kayak as my mom can’t do kayak we were assured no kayak. I had to then explain to the tour operator as they didn’t send any notes. Then the cherry on the Sunday we both got very aggressive good poisoning. Plead with the owners to give us meds and water or rehydration which took a while. Owner didn’t want to take accountability and his peace offering was to wave one of the buffet charges. I had to complain to the department of tourism to get all meal fees removed. Overall room condition is dated. Resort doesn’t have hot water. Wifi sucks. There’s a dirty water discharge by the dock in the harbour in the morning. This place should be inspected by the health department and the environmental agency and shut down!

The room was amazing with views of the bay and limestone cliffs. The staff was outstanding, communication before pickup was amazing and catered to our needs while on the island. The excursions and snorkeling were the best part, definitely would stay again!!

Food is terrible. Owned by Koreans that know NOTHING about cooking! I lost 10 pounds in 10 days. I had to go to McDonalds in Clark to get some decent food! Just awful! Don’t go! Not worth it at all!!!

Food discussing!!!! Unique place but for the price NO WAY!!! The biggest waste of money in my life. The 5 hour van ride is SO dangerous and they do NOT care about your safety at all! Don’t go!!!!! Ten days of hell. I lost 10 pounds! So weight watchers what? Go to the Philippines! YUK!!!

Peaceful and quiet stay. relaxing ang chill. the place is great to stay, excellent views. We were even upgraded to beach villa. staff are friendly and helpful. restaurant has a variety of international and local cuisines. Tried tasty grouper shashimi straight from the sea. they have a cage for live fish and we just pick the one we need. would definitely come back. wifi is 250MBPS in a very remote area. so I was also able to do some work.

The property is "ok." Rooms were decent and bed was comfy. A/C worked well but the temperature in February was very nice that you really didn't need it. Food was pretty decent but you do have to pay for it (except for breakfast). Overall, I had a relaxing time but I think I will try another island resort property.

No activities offered, paid for a room with a terrace and got a horrible one instead, old, looks dirty, employees don’t speak good English, food not recommended. Rip off for price I paid, over priced, rooms not as described! Not happy with my stay at all!
