Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other islands or distant provinces in the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila is the most efficient method. Major airlines operate frequent flights to Manila from key cities like Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, and Cagayan de Anda. You can easily compare fares and book flight tickets on Traveloka, with prices often ranging from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 for round trips, depending on the season and booking time.

Once you land at NAIA, reaching Makati is straightforward. Taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available at the airport terminals, offering a direct route to your accommodation. The journey typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, with fares varying between PHP 300 to PHP 500, influenced by traffic conditions. Alternatively, you can opt for public transportation like the airport bus services that connect to various points in Metro Manila, including Makati.

For those traveling from nearby provinces on Luzon, bus travel is a viable and economical option. Numerous bus companies ply routes to Metro Manila, with terminals strategically located throughout the city. From these terminals, you can take local buses, jeepneys, or taxis to reach Makati. Bus fares are considerably lower than flights, usually ranging from PHP 500 to PHP 1,000 for longer inter-island routes, offering a budget-friendly way to reach the capital region.

Best Time to Visit Makati

Makati, like much of Metro Manila, experiences a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season, generally from November to April, is considered the most pleasant time to visit. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring the city on foot, visiting outdoor attractions, and enjoying the vibrant street life without the inconvenience of heavy rain.

The peak tourist season typically falls between December and February, coinciding with cooler temperatures and holiday festivities. While the weather is excellent, expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices. For a balance of good weather and fewer crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or March. These periods still offer favorable conditions for sightseeing and experiencing Makati's offerings.

The wet season runs from May to October, characterized by frequent rainfall, sometimes heavy and prolonged. While this period might deter some outdoor activities, it also brings fewer tourists and more competitive hotel rates, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers. If you plan to visit during the rainy season, it's wise to pack an umbrella and rain gear, and focus your itinerary on indoor attractions like malls, museums, and restaurants.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Filipino cuisine is a celebration of flavors, and Makati offers a fantastic platform to explore its diverse culinary landscape. When in the area, you absolutely must try Adobo, the unofficial national dish. Whether it's chicken or pork, slow-cooked in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, its savory and tangy profile is a comforting taste of home for many Filipinos and an introduction for first-timers.

Another essential dish to seek out is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup that comes in various forms, most commonly with pork, shrimp, or fish, and flavored with tamarind, guava, or other souring agents. Its distinct tartness is incredibly refreshing, especially on a warm day, and it’s a staple in Filipino households. Look for restaurants that offer authentic, home-style versions for the best experience.

For those who enjoy grilled specialties, Lechon Kawali is a must. This dish features deep-fried pork belly with a crispy, golden-brown skin and tender meat, typically served with a side of soy-vinegar dipping sauce. The satisfying crunch followed by the rich, succulent pork is an indulgence that many Filipinos rave about. It’s a perfect dish to share with friends or family.

Don't leave Makati without trying La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo. This flavorful broth is packed with pork, shrimp, chicharon, and various vegetables, offering a complex and deeply satisfying taste. It’s a perfect meal for any time of day, providing warmth and a burst of local flavors that represent the Philippines' culinary heritage.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Understanding local customs can greatly enhance your experience in Makati. Filipinos are generally known for their hospitality and politeness. Using "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority is a sign of respect. When visiting religious sites, dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. It's also customary to remove your shoes before entering someone's home.

Safety in Makati is generally good, especially in well-trafficked areas like shopping malls and business districts. However, like any major city, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded places, and avoid displaying expensive items openly. It's advisable to use reputable taxi services or ride-sharing apps for transportation, particularly at night. In case of emergencies, the local police hotline is 117.

To make your trip smoother, consider downloading a few essential apps. Grab is indispensable for ride-hailing and food delivery, offering convenience and competitive pricing. Google Maps is crucial for navigation, helping you find your way around the city and discover points of interest. For communication, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used by Filipinos to stay connected. Having these apps on your phone will significantly ease your exploration of Makati.

The bldg itself and the hallways seemed sketchy. Looked old and sketchy vs their advertised photos & their website. However upon entering the room, the place was clean and comfy! The room had a modern and minimalist style plus it was spacious for a regular-sized room. Their rates are fair enough considering that they don't offer breakfast.

The security guard on night shift duty last night was very rude. He won't let us park at the vacant parking lot in front of the hotel. So booked the hotel due to parking space availability. He said we should have informed him first. I don't think this is appropriate as hotel is showing free parking availability
