Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Reaching Manila, the nation's capital, is a common journey for many Filipinos, whether for business, family visits, or leisure. From within Metro Manila, various transportation options are available. For those coming from other regions, flights are the most efficient method. Major airlines operate frequent flights to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) from key cities like Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo. Flight prices can vary significantly, but booking in advance, especially through platforms like Traveloka, can secure fares ranging from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and booking time.

For travelers on a tighter budget or coming from nearby provinces, bus travel is a viable alternative. Numerous bus companies ply routes to Manila's various terminals from Luzon's northern and southern regions. A bus journey from Baguio, for instance, might cost around PHP 500 to PHP 800 and take approximately 5 to 7 hours. Similarly, trips from Bicol can range from PHP 800 to PHP 1,200, with travel times of 8 to 10 hours. Planning your trip and checking bus schedules in advance is recommended.

Driving to Manila is also an option for those with their own vehicles. Major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect the capital to the rest of Luzon. Toll fees will apply, and the total cost can vary depending on your starting point. It's essential to factor in potential traffic, especially when entering the city, which can significantly extend travel times. For those flying in, remember to book flight tickets early for the best deals.

Best Time to Visit Manila

Manila experiences a tropical climate, characterized by high temperatures and humidity throughout the year. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city's numerous attractions.

The cooler months within the dry season, specifically from December to February, are often considered the most pleasant. Temperatures are slightly milder, and the humidity is generally lower, offering a more comfortable experience for sightseeing. However, this period also coincides with peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices.

The wet season, from May to October, brings frequent rain showers and typhoons. While this period might see fewer tourists and lower prices, travel plans can be disrupted by inclement weather. If you choose to visit during this time, it's wise to have indoor activities planned and to stay updated on weather forecasts.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Manila is a culinary melting pot, offering a diverse range of flavors that reflect its rich history and cultural influences. For Filipino travelers, exploring the local food scene is an essential part of the experience. One dish that stands out is Adobo, considered by many to be the national dish. Its savory and tangy flavor, derived from soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a comforting taste of home. You can find excellent Adobo in traditional Filipino restaurants and carinderias across the city.

Another must-try is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth, meat (pork, beef, or fish), and an assortment of vegetables. The distinct sourness is incredibly refreshing, especially on a warm day. Its comforting warmth and complex flavors make it a beloved dish for many Filipinos.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-halo is an iconic Filipino dessert that is perfect for Manila's tropical climate. This delightful concoction features shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's a visually appealing and deliciously refreshing treat that offers a burst of different textures and flavors in every spoonful.

Don't leave Manila without trying Lechon, a whole roasted pig known for its crispy skin and succulent meat. While often served during special occasions, many restaurants offer Lechon portions for everyday enjoyment. The rich, savory flavor is a true indulgence. Exploring local eateries and food markets will introduce you to these and many other authentic Filipino culinary delights.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Understanding local customs can greatly enhance your experience in Manila. Filipinos are generally known for their hospitality and politeness. Using "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority is a sign of respect. It's also common to be invited into homes, and accepting such invitations is a gesture of goodwill. When visiting churches or religious sites, dress modestly out of respect.

When it comes to safety, like any large city, it's important to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure and be cautious of pickpockets, especially in crowded areas like markets and public transportation. It's advisable to avoid displaying expensive items openly. For emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. Having a local SIM card can be very useful for communication and accessing data.

For navigating Manila and staying connected, several apps are highly recommended for Filipino travelers. Grab is essential for ride-hailing and food delivery, offering a convenient way to get around and order meals. Google Maps is invaluable for navigation, providing real-time traffic updates and public transport information. GCash or Maya are useful for mobile payments, allowing for cashless transactions at many establishments.

The location and price make this a worthwhile stop. It's a noisey neighborhood. It's quirky, so not for everyone. Clean, internally quiet, and conveniently located by Rizal Park (I booked this for the New Year's fireworks), the US embassy, aquarium, and historical sites. The cafe and lounge are way cool and underutilized. In Chicago, this would be a huge hit with the roaring twenties crowd!

The quality of rooms was below standard. Our first room had no hot water, aircon did not work properly and the door would not shut. The staff were very friensly and helpful and we were moved to another room. Though, this room was better with working aircon and hot water there was obvious wear and tear in the room with leaky taps and broken toilet seat. Overall, not the best experience.

This hotel badly needs renovation. My room had an overall appearance of being very dilapidated, with most surfaces showing significant wear and tear, including smudged and chipped paint, broken or poorly working features, such as the door did not close properly and the window curtains were difficult to open. The bathroom had a missing sink stopper, broken tiles in the shower, and caulking around fixtures was done poorly and did not provide adequate seals. The lighting in the bathroom was so dim I could not shave there. On the plus side, the staff was friendly and helpful and when I complained about my original room, the manager offered me another room that was better but still had most of the problems of the first room. Also, according to information in the room this hotel was designed and built to "sway" (physically move) in order to accommodate wind loading and minor earth movement. The room swayed regularly and it made me uncomfortable and feel like the building would collapse. I left early, giving up multiple paid nights of my booking because I could not wait to get out of there.

The property is in need of a renovation, very outdated. Airconditioning took all night to get cold. Sheets were stained and worn out. There was a cockroach in my room! Chose this for convenience of being near the US Embassy. My advise to others, book Bayview Park or some other hotel nearby.

Absolutely amazing example of an art deco hotel. Little bit rundown. Unfortunately, there is incredibly busy highway running in front of the hotel which spoils The experience somewhat. A kettle and a few cups and saucer s would be great. It is excellent value for money and you consider that it’s only a few kilometres from Intramuros. I’d visit for the architecture and internal decor alone.

The common area in the hotel were absolutely beautiful. The rooms were a little rustic the bathrooms need update so badly. The room that I was in, I had to squeeze into the shower because the door was a sliding glass door, and the opening was not that big.
