Paradise Island 🏝 but needs maintenance...
We spent 4 nights with our daughters (3 and 4) in November 2017 and the all family enjoyed its lot! 👉🏻 Strong points: - amazing location: 1 h sailing from Roxas. On a Island surrounded by coral reef. - diving center (Tarvis) on the Island itself; - the beach. - price. - the staff (they even took care of our daughters while we were diving). 👉🏻 Things to do: - Snorkeling: corals are located from 10 meters from the beach in very shallow water. The area is protected (fishing is not allowed) and you can see numerous kind of fishes (parrot fish, clown fish, grouper, ray, baby shark,...), sponges, corals... - diving. - boat trip: fishing, ... - there is also a beach volleyball net, billard, dart,... 👉🏻 Things to know: - transfert to the island is at 2pm. Don’t be late. - the shower works with salty water. - as in many other places in Palawan, they don’t accept bank cards so bring cash (or you can pay there via PayPal). 👉🏻 Weak points: - lack of general maintenance and cleaning. - Waste management: no waste segregation, lot of trashes around the Island... - Still working with generators (no solar panels). - the bed room needs to be deeply refreshed.

If I had to describe this island in one word it would be Paradise! The views are amazing, like an image from a postcard but in a real life. If you're not looking for a 5 star type of a resort then this is the place! Very cozy, secluded and peaceful. I loved the sandbars, starfish, crystal clear water... I'll definitely visit this island again.

Needs some love
Modessa Island is a very pretty spot surrounded by beautiful warm torquoise waters and the hills of the mainland in the distance. The staff are friendly and Marco in particular was helpful and attentive. However, there are limited food choices and the quality is poor, if you are food lovers and vegetarian like us. The menu is unimaginative and items frequently run out due to questionable systems of stock control. Choosing the next meal was a depressing experience after the first day. The flies are rampant and it is a constant mission to stop them landing on your food and on yourself. The sea facing cabins are basic and have salt water showers and mosquito nets. There are lots of fish, rays and a reef shark in the crystal clear water, but sadly the coral is mostly dead due to the increased sea temperature. The transfers via tricycle and boat were efficient and punctual. In summary, the resort needs a lot of love and a skilled chef.

SUPER Island
Accommodation is modestly, but on a beautiful beach. Snorkeling with little shark, skate and careta is very super. Possibility to play billiards or beach volleyball. The staff is friendly and helpful, the food SUPER. Island is very clean and beautiful. I RECOMMEND.

Natural beauty, bad service
The island itself is beautiful. It is less than an hours boat ride from Roxas. Several boats come and go each day. Unfortunately about a year ago a major coral bleaching event killed almost all coral. It is still nice for snorkeling. We also did a few scuba dives. The place doesn't claim to be the greatest dive spot on earth. Depending on your expectations you can be very disappointed or find it enjoyable We found it enjoyable and the dive centre well run and very accommodating. Electricity is on from evening till morning. The huts are simple and bathrooms a little bit run down. Each hut has its own hammock and beach chairs and a nice view of a well cleaned beach. The food was simple and taste-wise it ranged between great and mediocre. The selection is not very big and often items are not available. The portions were good, we are small eaters and always shared one main. But the service is bad. Especially for 110AUD (~90USD) a night considering the cost of living and wages in this region. A few examples: the only drinkable water on the island are two water dispensers in the restaurant area. Twice in five days the water dispensers were both empty. When we felt like having some juice in the afternoon, we couldn't find anyone to order it from. During dinner we asked when we can order juice or similar in the afternoon and we were told from 5 pm on. So we tried that the next day and didn't see anyone till around 6pm. Another day we did get something but even then it felt we intruded on their time, a feeling that we had many times during our stay. It seemed that we really inconvenience the staff with our presence. E.g. several times there were no plastic cups in the instant coffee & tea area or the some other part was missing. When something was missing, it would take half a day or longer to get replaced or refilled and only once we finally found someone to ask about it. The cups sometimes tasted salty (ie bore water was used to clean it). The same "we are out of mango, papaya, etc" happened a few times. Considering that there are several boats coming and leaving each day, we thought their stock management was underwhelming. They were even out of coconuts. We had a worker sleep in "our" hammock even though there we plenty vacant huts left and right and ours was clearly occupied. Later in the evening you could find part of the staff playing pool and occupying the lounge area in the restaurant so none of the guests could use it. The sunset viewing platform was probably originally meant to have a nice dinner with a view, but now is used as a sleeping area. There were several similarly small things which combined left us feeling slightly unwelcome and underwhelmed.
