I had an amazing time at this homestay and was made to feel very welcome. The place is run by super friendly Vivian who shared lots of good local knowledge, helped arrange many things, and cooked delicious breakfasts. Her son does surfing lessons which I tried for the first time, and I can totally recommend him. They can also arrange very cheap motorbike rental. They have some friendly dogs and cats so if you are an animal lover this place would really suit you. The room was very clean and quiet in the evenings. I would be happy to recommend this place to others.

Your Travel Guide to General Luna, Siargao Islands as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to General Luna, Siargao Islands from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

Reaching Siargao Islands, particularly General Luna, is most efficiently done by air. Direct flights from Manila (MNL) and Cebu (CEB) to Siargao Airport (IAO) are available. Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific are common carriers. Flight durations are approximately 1 hour and 35 minutes from Manila and around 1 hour from Cebu. Fares can vary significantly based on booking time and season, but budget-friendly options can often be found if booked in advance. You can book flight tickets easily on Traveloka.

For travelers coming from other parts of Mindanao, such as Davao or Cagayan de Oro, you might find flights to nearby airports like Surigao Airport (SUG) or Butuan Airport (BXU), followed by a bus and ferry combination. For instance, from Surigao City, you can take a ferry to Siargao. The ferry ride typically takes about 2 to 4 hours. Bus fares from major cities to ferry terminals can range from PHP 500 to PHP 1,500, depending on the origin and bus company.

Driving to Siargao is not a direct option as it is an island. However, if you are in Mindanao, you can drive to Surigao City and then take a ferry with your vehicle. This route involves significant travel time and ferry costs. For most travelers from Luzon and Visayas, flying directly to Siargao Airport is the most practical and time-efficient method to reach General Luna.

Best Time to Visit General Luna, Siargao Islands

The peak season for surfing and general tourism in Siargao Islands, including General Luna, typically runs from September to May. This period generally offers calmer seas for island hopping and good surfing conditions, especially for Cloud 9. The months of September to November are particularly popular for surf competitions.

However, for those who prefer fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, the shoulder months or the off-peak season can be appealing. The months from June to August are considered the rainy season, which can bring more unpredictable weather and rougher seas, potentially impacting island-hopping activities. Despite this, surfing can still be excellent during this time for experienced riders.

Considering a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, the months of March to May and September to November are often recommended. These periods offer a good chance of pleasant weather for exploring the island's many attractions while avoiding the absolute peak tourist influx. Always check weather forecasts closer to your travel dates.

Food and Dining Near General Luna, Siargao Islands — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Siargao Islands, and General Luna in particular, offers a delightful culinary scene that blends local flavors with international influences. A must-try for any Filipino traveler is fresh seafood, often grilled to perfection. Look for establishments serving *kinilaw*, a local ceviche made with raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It’s a refreshing appetizer that highlights the freshness of the catch.

Another local specialty you should seek out is *La Paz Batchoy*, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo but popular across the Philippines. In Siargao, you can find versions of this savory soup, often enriched with pork, shrimp, and vegetables, providing a comforting meal, especially after a day of surfing or exploring. It’s a taste of home with a tropical twist.

Don't leave Siargao without trying *Halo-Halo*, a fitting choice for Filipino dessert. While available everywhere, Siargao's versions often incorporate local fruits and ingredients, offering a unique spin on the beloved shaved ice and milk concoction. For a more substantial meal, many eateries offer *Sinigang*, a sour and savory soup, typically made with pork or fish, flavored with tamarind or other souring agents.

You'll also find numerous small eateries, known as *carinderias*, offering affordable and authentic Filipino dishes. These are great places to sample local favorites like *Adobo*, *Pancit*, and various vegetable dishes. Exploring these local spots provides a genuine taste of Filipino cuisine and supports local businesses.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for General Luna, Siargao Islands

When visiting General Luna, it's important to be mindful of local customs. Filipinos are generally warm and hospitable, so a friendly demeanor and respectful attitude go a long way. Learning a few basic Tagalog or local dialect phrases can be appreciated. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people. Tipping is not customary but is always welcome for exceptional service.

Safety in Siargao Islands is generally good, especially in tourist areas like General Luna. However, like any travel destination, it's wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure, be aware of your surroundings, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. For emergencies, note down the local police and hospital contact numbers. The Philippine National Police (PNP) hotline is a good general number to have.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is crucial for navigation, especially when exploring the island's less-traveled roads. Ride-hailing apps are not as prevalent as in major cities, so familiarize yourself with local tricycle services. A currency converter app can be handy for managing your budget, and a translation app might be useful if you encounter non-English speakers.

when we arrive at the moonlight homestay with my wife, the owner did not accommodate as fast. she said that, she did not receive any payment from my booking. we felt like we didn't pay for my standard room. about 1 hour that we're waiting so that I & my wife can relax to my room cause we have been in traveling for many hours. and about the breakfast she always said that she will going to fix but we are waiting again for an hour & so I decide to went outside looking for a restaurant so we can take a breakfast.2 days in the moonlight homestay we didn't take a breakfast in her hotel. i think that she did not know how to handle her guest.
