Your Travel Guide to El Nido as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to El Nido from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most common and convenient way to reach El Nido from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Flights typically land at Lio Airport (ENI) in El Nido. Airlines like AirSWIFT operate direct flights from Manila. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but expect prices to range from PHP 4,000 to PHP 8,000 for a round trip if you book flight tickets early.

For travelers on a tighter budget, an alternative route involves flying into Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS), which is often cheaper. From Puerto Princesa, you can take a van or bus to El Nido. This journey takes about 5 to 6 hours and typically costs between PHP 500 to PHP 800 for a one-way ticket. While longer, this option can be more economical for those looking to save on travel expenses.

If you prefer land travel, you can take a bus from Manila to El Nido, though this is a very long journey, often exceeding 24 hours. This usually involves multiple transfers and is generally not recommended unless you have ample time and are seeking the most budget-friendly option. Driving your own vehicle is also possible but requires significant planning and endurance due to the long distances and road conditions. For most Filipino travelers, flying into Lio Airport is the preferred method.

Best Time to Visit El Nido

The dry season, from November to May, is generally considered the best time to visit El Nido. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and minimal rainfall, which are ideal conditions for island hopping, swimming, and other water activities. The peak tourist season falls between December and April, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for flights and accommodation during this period.

The shoulder months, such as November and May, can offer a good balance of favorable weather and fewer crowds. If you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere and potentially better deals, consider visiting during these times. The wet season, from June to October, brings a higher chance of rain and rougher seas, which can sometimes lead to tour cancellations. However, this period also sees fewer tourists and lower prices, and the rain often comes in short, intense bursts.

Food and Dining Near El Nido — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in El Nido, be sure to indulge in fresh seafood, a staple in Palawan's culinary scene. Many restaurants offer grilled fish, squid, and prawns, often caught daily. Look for local eateries that serve *Kinilaw*, a Filipino ceviche made with raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It’s a refreshing and flavorful dish that perfectly complements the tropical climate.

Another must-try is *La Paz Batchoy*, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo but popular throughout the Philippines. While El Nido is known for seafood, finding a good bowl of Batchoy can be a comforting experience, especially on a cooler evening. The rich broth, tender pork, and chewy noodles make it a satisfying meal. Many local carinderias and small restaurants will offer this.

Don't forget to sample *Halo-Halo* for dessert. This popular Filipino mixed-concoction dessert is a delightful blend of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It's the perfect way to cool down after a day under the sun. You'll find various versions of this sweet treat at local eateries and dessert stalls across El Nido.

For a taste of local Palawan cuisine, try *Tamilok*, a type of woodworm found in mangrove areas, often served raw with vinegar. While it might sound adventurous, it's considered a delicacy by many. If you're feeling brave, this unique dish offers a truly local flavor experience. Many tour packages might even include a stop where you can try this.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for El Nido

Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and El Nido is no exception. Always greet locals with a smile and be respectful of their customs. It's polite to use "po" and "opo" when speaking to elders or those in authority. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service. Be mindful of noise levels, especially in residential areas, and dress modestly when visiting local villages or churches.

Safety in El Nido is generally good, but it's always wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit places late at night. For any emergencies, the local police can be reached at their station in town. It's also a good idea to have the contact numbers of your hotel and any tour operators readily available.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is crucial for navigation. A translation app can be helpful if you encounter non-English speakers, though English is widely understood in tourist areas. Ride-hailing apps are not prevalent in El Nido; instead, rely on tricycles for local transport. Having a weather app can also help you plan your daily activities around potential rain showers.

Finally, ensure you have a reliable communication app like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger to stay in touch with family and friends, especially if you purchase a local SIM card. These apps are widely used in the Philippines and can help you share your experiences and coordinate plans easily. Having these tools at your disposal will enhance your overall travel experience in El Nido.

Loved this hotel and the staff were fabulous! However the food was appalling and service for food was extremely poor. Such a shame as can not fault anything else other than this. Poor choices and wanted the cesar salad one day but no chicken then tried to order it the next day but no lettuce. This was the norm for any food that you tried to order. I wanted poached eggs for breakfast but got hard boiled instead. They really need a lot of training in the kitchen to make this hotel great! Location was perfect

This place was magical. Rooms were gorgeous - the view!!! The overall resort was so well maintained, staff were constantly cleaning. The only downside (and no joke from other reviews) was the stairs. BUT you can only get the views from climbing up 😀. It is a walk through their little shops, through the beach and tons of stairs which made it a little bit of a trek for mt elder parents but honestly so worth it! Very much recommend thia place

Lovely beach and view, high tide makes it an adventure to access the property wading through shallow waves. Windows are rustic paper thin, lovely to hear the sound of the waves not so much the geckos and birds early in the morning. No water supplied and advised not to drink the service water by reception. Stay next doo at the Meg Meg beach club bit more expensive but is more refined. This place is all about the view great for a short stop but you’ll miss comforts for longer stays.

It was the most beautiful hotel I have ever stayed in my life with the exception of not having an elevator. We had to climb about 6 stories of steps up the side of a mountain but worth every penny. It was the most beautiful view from a hotel I have ever seen. When you get to your room you really find it hard to leave your balcony. My recommendation for the next person is dress for the beach and leave a bag with dry clothes at the front desk so that you only need to do the climb once a day. The hotel staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The food was the best I have ever had in the Philippines. I have been traveling to the Philippines for 14 years and normally not very impressed with their food but they are always wonderful people

Right in front of Marimegmeg beach - so nice to be able to walk to it in a few steps from the entrance. Clean and spacious room with a great ocean view. Staff were attentive and helpful, and breakfast was tasty (only had Filipino dishes this time but they had western options as well). Would definitely come back when visiting El Nido next.

Our room was ocean facing as described. Staffs were caring and helpful always, air conditioning worked great. I love the filtered water machine is just outside our room, and clothes rack outside the door to dry off swimwear and such, so thoughtful!

The most beautiful hotel. Our room was incredible with the best view in El Nido. A special thank you to all of the amazing, friendly and attentive staff, especially Norvin and Lila who were just exceptional.

Absolutely loved this hotel. The staff's English isn't the best, but this hotel is unique, beautiful and on an amazing beach close to all the amenities you need. We truly enjoyed it.

Breakfast was extremely disappointing, milk was off, lots of cross contamination, not attentive to service. Room was not made one day, towels not replaced on two of the five days. No tv in the room
