Your Travel Guide to San Vicente as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to San Vicente from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to San Vicente from Manila and other major Philippine cities primarily involves air travel. The most common route is to fly into Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS), which serves as the main gateway to southern Palawan. Several airlines offer daily flights from Manila to Puerto Princesa, with fares typically ranging from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

From Puerto Princesa, you can take a van or bus to Port Barton, which is the closest town to San Vicente with regular transport links. These land transfers typically cost between PHP 400 to PHP 600 per person and take about 3 to 4 hours. Some travelers opt to fly directly to San Vicente Airport (SWL), which offers a much shorter travel time to the town itself, but flight availability and cost can be more variable. Booking flights in advance is highly recommended to secure better prices.

For those coming from other parts of Palawan, such as El Nido, direct van services to Port Barton are also available. These journeys can take around 4 to 5 hours. The roads leading to San Vicente and Port Barton have been improved over the years, making the land travel more comfortable. Planning your transportation in advance, especially if traveling during peak season, will ensure a smoother journey to this beautiful part of Palawan.

Best Time to Visit San Vicente

The ideal time to visit San Vicente, Palawan, is generally during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is typically sunny with calmer seas, making it perfect for island hopping, beach activities, and exploring the coastline. The months of December to February are particularly pleasant, with cooler temperatures and lower humidity, offering comfortable conditions for outdoor exploration.

The shoulder months of November and May can also be excellent choices, offering a good balance of favorable weather and fewer crowds compared to the peak season. Traveling during the wet season, from June to October, means you might encounter more rainfall and occasional typhoons, which could disrupt travel plans and limit outdoor activities. However, the wet season also brings lush greenery to the landscape and fewer tourists, potentially offering a more tranquil experience for some.

For Filipino travelers looking to experience the best of San Vicente's beaches and natural attractions, aiming for the dry season ensures the most reliable weather for enjoying the outdoors. It's always a good idea to check the weather forecast closer to your travel dates, regardless of the season, to prepare adequately for your trip.

Food and Dining Near San Vicente — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When visiting San Vicente, embracing the local culinary scene is a key part of the experience. Filipino travelers should definitely try fresh seafood, which is abundant in this coastal region. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid, often seasoned simply with salt, pepper, and calamansi, are staples. Look for small eateries or carinderias that serve freshly caught seafood prepared daily.

Another must-try is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, usually tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, chili peppers, and sometimes coconut milk. It’s a refreshing and flavorful dish, perfect for the tropical climate. Many local restaurants and even some beachfront stalls offer their own take on this classic Filipino appetizer.

Adobo, a national dish, is also widely available and prepared in various ways. Whether it's chicken, pork, or a combination, the savory and slightly tangy flavor of soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns is a comforting taste of home. Trying the local version of adobo can offer a unique regional twist on this beloved Filipino classic.

For a sweet treat, seek out local fruits like mangoes, lanzones, and coconuts. Freshly squeezed fruit juices or buko (young coconut) juice are perfect for hydration and a refreshing break. Many local markets and roadside stalls offer these tropical delights, providing a taste of Palawan's natural bounty.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for San Vicente

Filipino travelers visiting San Vicente will find a generally welcoming and relaxed local culture. Politeness and respect are highly valued, so using "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or authority figures is appreciated. It's also customary to dress modestly when visiting local villages or churches, though beachwear is perfectly acceptable at the coast.

Safety in San Vicente is generally good, but like any travel destination, it's wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded areas or on public transport. Be aware of your surroundings, particularly at night. For any emergencies, local police can be contacted, and it's useful to have the contact numbers of your accommodation and any tour operators readily available.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is indispensable for navigation. A translation app can be helpful if you encounter situations where communication is a barrier, though English is widely understood in tourist areas. Ride-hailing apps are not as prevalent in San Vicente as in major cities, so relying on local tricycles and pre-arranged transport is more common.

Having a local currency converter app can also be useful for managing your budget. Lastly, a weather app will help you stay updated on the conditions, allowing you to plan your activities accordingly. These tools can enhance your experience and ensure a smoother, safer trip in San Vicente.

The room with a private toilet is located right next to the bar/reception, so you need to have the curtains closed at all times if you don't want staff and guests looking straight in, only a few meters away. They also play music from the bar/reception until around 11 pm and start again around 7-9am, and it can be heard clearly in the room. The room's AC is very loud. The bathroom did not feel very clean, the towels had others guests hair entangled into them, and they don't provide any soap. The location is quite good but next time I'd opt for something even closer to the beach. The breakfast is good and the staff are nice.
