Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers residing in Metro Manila, reaching Makati is generally straightforward due to its central location. If you are in the northern parts of the capital, you can utilize the MRT, heading south towards Ayala or Buendia stations, which are key access points to Makati. From these stations, you can take a short jeepney, bus, or taxi ride directly into the heart of Makati.

For those coming from further south in Metro Manila, similar bus and jeepney routes are available. Driving is also an option, with major thoroughfares like EDSA and Ayala Avenue providing direct access, though be prepared for significant traffic, especially during peak hours.

Travelers from Cebu and other Visayas regions will typically fly into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Pasay City. From NAIA, Makati is a relatively short drive, approximately 30-45 minutes without heavy traffic. Taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available at the airport terminals. For a more budget-friendly option, you can take an airport bus or a public utility bus heading towards Pasay Rotonda, and then transfer to a jeepney or bus bound for Makati.

Booking your book flight to Manila well in advance can help secure more economical fares.

For those coming from Davao and other Mindanao regions, flying into NAIA is also the most practical option. The flight duration is around 2 hours. Upon arrival at NAIA, the same transport options to Makati apply as mentioned for travelers from Cebu. Alternatively, for a more adventurous and budget-conscious journey, long-haul bus services operate between major cities in Mindanao and Metro Manila, though this is a significantly longer travel time, often spanning over 24 hours.

For most travelers, however, flying remains the preferred method due to its speed and convenience.

Best Time to Visit Makati

Makati, like much of Metro Manila, experiences a tropical climate characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season generally runs from November to April, offering the most pleasant weather for exploring the city. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it ideal for walking around, visiting outdoor attractions, and enjoying the city's al fresco dining options.

The cooler months within the dry season, from November to February, are particularly favored by many Filipino travelers, as the temperatures are more moderate, and the air feels less oppressive. This period is considered peak season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices.

The wet season typically spans from May to October. During this time, you can anticipate frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours or thunderstorms. While this might deter some from outdoor activities, it also presents an opportunity for a more relaxed and potentially budget-friendly trip. The crowds tend to be smaller, and you might find better deals on flights and accommodations.

For travelers who don't mind occasional rain showers and prefer a less crowded atmosphere, the wet season can be a good time to visit. It's advisable to carry an umbrella or raincoat and to plan indoor activities for days with heavy rainfall.

For a balanced experience, the shoulder months of November and May can offer a good compromise. You might still encounter some rain in May as the wet season begins, but the crowds are usually not yet at their peak. Similarly, November marks the start of the dry season, with pleasant weather and fewer crowds than the absolute peak months of December and January. Ultimately, the best time to visit depends on your personal preferences regarding weather, crowd tolerance, and budget.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Makati's culinary landscape is a reflection of the Philippines' diverse gastronomic heritage, offering everything from traditional comfort food to innovative modern dishes. A must-try for any Filipino traveler is **Adobo**, the unofficial national dish. Whether it's chicken, pork, or a combination, the savory and tangy blend of soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns is a flavor profile deeply ingrained in the Filipino palate.

In Makati, you can find excellent versions in both casual eateries and more upscale restaurants, often with unique twists like adding coconut milk or a touch of sweetness. Look for restaurants that highlight traditional Filipino cuisine for an authentic taste.

Another essential dish to seek out is **Sinigang**, a sour and savory soup that comes in various broths, most commonly tamarind-based. The tartness of the broth, combined with tender meat (pork, beef, fish, or shrimp) and an assortment of vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes, makes it a comforting and palate-cleansing meal, especially on a rainy day. Many Filipino households have their own version, and restaurants in Makati often serve it with pride.

It’s a dish that evokes a sense of home for many Filipinos and is a delightful discovery for those new to the cuisine.

For those who enjoy grilled delicacies, **Inihaw na Liempo** (grilled pork belly) is a popular choice. Marinated and grilled to perfection, the pork belly becomes tender and smoky, with a delightful char. It’s typically served with a side of soy-vinegar dipping sauce, often with chopped onions and chili. This is a staple at Filipino gatherings and is widely available in restaurants and even street food stalls around Makati.

The rich, fatty flavor of the pork belly, combined with the smoky char, makes it incredibly satisfying.

Don't leave Makati without trying **La Paz Batchoy**, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo. This rich broth, typically made with pork and shrimp, is loaded with noodles, pork cracklings, and various offal. It’s a complex and deeply flavorful dish that offers a substantial meal. While it might seem adventurous to some, its savory depth and comforting warmth are highly rewarding.

Many Filipino restaurants in Makati will feature this regional specialty, offering a taste of the Visayas in the heart of the capital.

Finally, for dessert or a sweet treat, seek out **Halo-Halo**. This iconic Filipino dessert is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s a colorful and refreshing mix of textures and flavors, perfect for cooling down in the tropical heat. The name itself means "mix-mix," and the fun is in stirring all the ingredients together before digging in.

You'll find various interpretations of Halo-Halo across Makati, from simple street-side versions to more elaborate presentations in cafes and restaurants.

friendly and nice staff. we hope for the cleanliness and maintenance of the hotel to be improved. because there are many cockroaches in the room, dust and food residue under the bed. dirty and uncomfortable.

I stayed there for quite sometime. The place is quiet but internet is too much slow (Slower than the turtle) When I am in my room. It took me a lot of trials to send one email. Worst I cannot be reached by my number as signal in my room was on and off too. With one bar at most. The room was too small but that was fine for me but it doesn't have any table or chair. I have been asking for a table since day 1 but they never provided. It was hard for me as I was working from home. My table had to be my bed and my luggage became my chair. Worst, I had to eat japanese/ Arabic style (Eating on the floor). Be careful of the black blinds too. Its black but when your light is on wow everything is visible from outside. So I had to put on towels or clothes just to cover up. For travelers, bring your own soap. Its not provided.
