I stayed in 4 different hotels including a Lower Penthouse apartment during my holiday in the Philippines and I can honestly say Ninong's was by far the best. The room was good, clean and spacious, the pool was very good, fabulous for a night time swim but the breakfast blew me away, tons of choices something for everyone and it was hot, unlike many places where it's barley warm. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The only thing that was not perfect was the tv, could'nt get it to work but this in no way effected my opinion of this hotel. Transfers from the airport are available at a very good price no rip off's here . Very happy with my stay and as a frequent visitor to Legazpi I will deffinatly be staying at this hotel again. 10/10

Your Travel Guide to Legazpi City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Legazpi City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For many Filipino travelers, Legazpi City is most conveniently reached by air. Several airlines operate daily flights from Manila (NAIA) to Legazpi International Airport (LGP). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-friendly options can often be found for around PHP 2,500 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip if booked strategically. You can easily compare and book flight tickets on Traveloka to find the best deals.

If you prefer a more scenic and economical journey, bus travel is a viable option. Buses depart regularly from terminals in Metro Manila (like Cubao and Pasay) bound for Legazpi City. The trip is considerably longer, usually taking between 10 to 12 hours, depending on traffic and stops. Fares typically range from PHP 1,000 to PHP 1,800 for a one-way ticket, with options for regular or de luxe seating. This is a good choice for those who enjoy road trips and want to see more of the Philippine countryside.

For those coming from other parts of Luzon, driving is also possible, though it's a long journey. The primary route involves taking the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and then the Pan-Philippine Highway, passing through Quezon province and onwards to Bicol. The total driving distance from Manila is approximately 470-500 kilometers. Be prepared for toll fees and potential road conditions, especially during the rainy season. The drive can take anywhere from 8 to 10 hours without significant stops.

Best Time to Visit Legazpi City

Legazpi City experiences a tropical climate, characterized by warm temperatures and high humidity throughout the year. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers, particularly those who want to enjoy outdoor activities and clear views of Mayon Volcano, is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to May. During these months, rainfall is less frequent, and the skies are often clearer, offering optimal conditions for sightseeing and adventure.

The peak tourist season generally coincides with the dry months, especially around the Christmas holidays and the summer months of March to May. While the weather is generally favorable, expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices during these periods. For a more relaxed visit with fewer crowds, consider the shoulder months of November, February, or early March. The period from June to October is the wet season, marked by more frequent rain showers and typhoons, which can sometimes disrupt travel plans and outdoor activities.

Food and Dining Near Legazpi City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Bicolano cuisine is renowned for its rich flavors, often featuring a delightful combination of spice, coconut milk, and local ingredients. A must-try dish is Bicol Express, a creamy and spicy stew made with pork, coconut milk, chilies, and shrimp paste. Its distinctive kick is a true representation of Bicolano culinary heritage.

Another local favorite is Laing, which consists of dried taro leaves simmered in thick coconut milk with generous amounts of chili and sometimes small pieces of fish or shrimp. The slow cooking process allows the flavors to meld beautifully, resulting in a dish that is both comforting and flavorful. It’s a staple in many Bicolano households and restaurants.

For seafood lovers, Kinunot na Pating is a unique delicacy. This dish features shark meat (or sometimes stingray) cooked in coconut milk with vinegar, onions, garlic, and chili. The texture is often compared to flaked fish, and the preparation gives it a distinct, savory taste that many find addictive. It’s evidence of the region's creativity in using local marine resources.

Don't leave Legazpi without trying Sili Ice Cream. This innovative dessert offers a surprising twist, with chili peppers incorporated into a creamy ice cream base. You can choose your preferred level of spiciness, from mild to intensely hot, providing a unique culinary adventure that perfectly complements the region's love for spice. Many local eateries and specialty shops offer these dishes, allowing you to savor the authentic tastes of Albay.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Legazpi City

Legazpi City, like much of the Philippines, is known for its warm and hospitable people. Filipinos are generally respectful of elders and traditions. When visiting religious sites like Saint Gregory the Great Cathedral, dress modestly out of respect. Learning a few basic Tagalog or local Bicolano phrases can go a long way in fostering positive interactions with locals.

Safety in Legazpi City is generally good, especially in tourist areas. However, as with any urban environment, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. It's advisable to use reputable transportation services, such as metered taxis or those arranged through your hotel. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around. For communication, Viber or WhatsApp are widely used by Filipinos. If you plan on booking transportation or tours, having the Traveloka app on your phone will be incredibly useful for managing your bookings and discovering local activities. Staying connected and informed will ensure a smoother and more enjoyable trip.

Staff were nice and courteous and breakfast was delicious. The deluxe room I booked was dark with a wall for a view. The door wouldn't open with the key card so we got transferred to a regular room. The A/C for the family room I booked for my in-laws wasn't working and they too got transferred to another room. The beds were extremely hard and not comfortable. The water was turned off for a good half an hour with no notice whatsoever and was disappointing. Luckily I was done taking a bath and was brushing my teeth when this happened. Better communication from the staff is highly recommended.

Commendable staff. Rooms acceptable but for tourism purposes- needs some freshening up (paint, caulking of bathroom). Free breakfast good enough but could be improved esp. when am paying for extra guests.

Excellent location, great staff service, delicious and varied buffet breakfast. Would recommend to others and will definitely come back if I ever visit the area in the future. The bathrooms and certain fixtures are a bit dated. Was not able to try the pool so no review on that hotel feature.

Generally a good hotel and standard as expected for the price. Friendly and helpful staff when we arrived helped us fix a few small issues with our room. Nice view of the volcano from our room. Breakfast buffet was fine if a little limited in choice and variety. Good location with plenty of shops and food choices within walking distance. Value for money.

The food and the customer service in this place is definitely great! They are always smiling and helpful. However, im unsure if its just the room i got is dirty and the others are ok or its just they all look the same. They informed me ahead of time that they are fully book and the room im gettinf is located in the newly built area, however the room definitely has some sort of smell and toilet definitely the corners is dirty.

Room was clean but old. Got scared to take the elevator as there were few brown outs happening and our room is at 4th floor, we have a senior citizen.

The stay waa great. The hotel's location is strategic and accessible to all your needs. The supermarket is just in front of the hotel. Laundry shop is only 3 blocks away same with the church. Breakfast is included in the accommodations from its restaurant. The food selection was really good.

Excellent location, great staff service, delicious and varied buffet breakfast. Would recommend to others and will definitely come back if I ever visit the area in the future. The bathrooms and certain fixtures are a bit dated. Was not able to try the pool so no review on that hotel feature.
