Your Travel Guide to Bacolod City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Bacolod City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For the most convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For many Filipino travelers, flying is the most convenient way to reach Bacolod City. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate regular flights from Manila (MNL) to Bacolod-Silay International Airport (BCD). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-friendly options can often be found for as low as PHP 2,000 to PHP 4,000 for a round trip if you book flight deals early.

If you prefer land and sea travel, Bacolod is accessible via ferry from various ports, most notably Iloilo City. Ferries from Iloilo to Bacolod are frequent, with trips taking approximately 1 to 2 hours. The cost is generally around PHP 300 to PHP 500. From Manila, you can take a bus to a southern Luzon port like Batangas or Lucena, then a ferry to the Visayas, or take a bus directly to Bicol and then connect to a ferry. This option is more time-consuming but can be a more economical choice for budget-conscious travelers.

Driving to Bacolod City is also an option, particularly for those coming from nearby Visayan provinces. The Pan-Philippine Highway network connects major islands. If driving from Luzon, you would need to factor in ferry crossings for your vehicle. Toll fees and fuel costs will add up, making this a journey best suited for those who enjoy road trips and have ample time. For most travelers coming from distant cities, booking a flight remains the most practical and time-efficient method.

Best Time to Visit Bacolod City

Bacolod City experiences a tropical climate, with two main seasons: a dry season and a wet season. The dry season generally runs from November to April, offering sunny days and lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. This period, particularly from November to February, is often considered the best time to visit, as the weather is most pleasant for sightseeing and enjoying the local festivals.

The wet season typically spans from May to October. During these months, expect intermittent rainfall, which can sometimes be heavy. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices, it's advisable to pack an umbrella and be prepared for occasional disruptions to outdoor plans. Despite the rain, Bacolod remains a welcoming destination, and the lush greenery of Negros Occidental is particularly vibrant during this time.

For travelers looking to experience local festivities, the MassKara Festival, held every October, is a major highlight. If you plan your visit around this time, you'll witness the city come alive with parades, street dancing, and vibrant costumes. However, be aware that this is peak season, so booking your accommodation and flights well in advance is highly recommended to secure better rates and availability.

Food and Dining Near Bacolod City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Bacolod is renowned as the "Sugarbowl of the Philippines" and is celebrated for its culinary delights, particularly its chicken inasal. This grilled chicken, marinated in a mixture of vinegar, calamansi, garlic, and annatto oil, is a smoky, savory masterpiece. You'll find excellent versions at local eateries and restaurants throughout the city. Don't forget to try it with a side of garlic rice and a dipping sauce of soy sauce, vinegar, and calamansi.

Another must-try is Bacolod's batchoy, a hearty noodle soup with pork, shrimp, and vegetables. While originating from Iloilo, Bacolod has its own delicious take on this comforting dish. For those with a sweet tooth, piaya, a flat, unleavened bread filled with muscovado sugar and sometimes yema or ube, is a popular delicacy. It's perfect with a cup of coffee or as a pasalubong (souvenir) for loved ones.

Silay City, a short drive from Bacolod, is known for its heritage houses and exquisite pastries. Trying the Napoleones, a layered puff pastry filled with custard cream and topped with icing, is a delightful experience. For a truly local experience, seek out carinderias or small eateries that serve authentic Filipino home-style cooking. Exploring these diverse culinary offerings is a significant part of the Bacolod experience for any Filipino traveler.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Bacolod City

When interacting with locals, a polite and respectful demeanor is always appreciated. A simple "salamat" (thank you) goes a long way.

The breakfast was great. The location was near our destination. However, the wifi cannot reach the room. I have been using mobile data the whole time. Also, I hope they would change the small couch pillows to a bed pillow. Over all experience was good.

Great value for money. The hotel and its facilities are still brand new. Make sure you tell the cab driver "North Tourist Inn" and it is different from another very similarly named budget hotel in the city.

Great value for money. The hotel and its facilities are still brand new. Make sure you tell the cab driver "North Tourist Inn" and it is different from another very similarly named budget hotel in the city.
