Your Travel Guide to Cebu City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cebu City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Cebu City from Manila is most efficiently done by air. Numerous daily flights operate between Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) and Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book, but you can often find round-trip tickets for as low as PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 if you plan ahead and look for deals.

For those preferring land and sea travel, you can take a bus from Manila to various ports in the Visayas, followed by a ferry to Cebu. This journey is considerably longer, often taking 20 to 30 hours or more, and involves multiple transfers. Bus fares can range from PHP 1,500 to PHP 3,000, with ferry tickets adding to the total cost. This option is best suited for travelers who have ample time and wish to experience a more scenic, albeit slower, route.

Driving to Cebu from Luzon is also an option, involving a series of ferry crossings. This is a long road trip, typically spanning several days. The cost would include fuel, toll fees, and multiple ferry charges for your vehicle. For most travelers, especially those coming from Manila, booking a book flight remains the most practical and time-saving method to reach Cebu City.

Best Time to Visit Cebu City

The ideal time to visit Cebu City for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and lower chances of rain, making it perfect for outdoor activities, exploring historical sites, and enjoying the city's beaches and islands. The cooler months within this period, from December to February, offer particularly pleasant weather.

The wet season, from June to October, brings with it higher humidity and a greater likelihood of rainfall, sometimes in the form of heavy downpours or typhoons. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices, it can disrupt travel plans and outdoor excursions. If you choose to visit during this time, it's advisable to have flexible plans and to check weather forecasts regularly.

For those interested in experiencing local festivals, the Sinulog Festival in January is a major highlight, drawing massive crowds for its vibrant street parades and religious celebrations. Visiting during this time offers a unique cultural immersion but requires booking accommodations and flights well in advance due to high demand.

Food and Dining Near Cebu City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Cebu is a culinary destination, and Filipino travelers should not leave without trying some of its iconic dishes. Lechon Cebu, renowned for its crispy skin and succulent meat, is a must-try. Often considered the best lechon in the Philippines, it's a celebratory dish perfect for sharing. You can find excellent lechon stalls and restaurants throughout Cebu City.

Another local specialty is Kinilaw, Cebu's version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, typically tuna or tanigue, is "cooked" in vinegar, spiced with ginger, onions, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing and tangy appetizer that perfectly complements the tropical climate. Many local eateries and seafood restaurants serve this delightful dish.

For those with a sweet tooth, Masareal and Tortitos are traditional Cebuano delicacies. Masareal is a soft, chewy bar made from ground peanuts, sugar, and eggs, while Tortitos are small, sweet biscuits. These are perfect for pasalubong (souvenirs) or a sweet treat with your afternoon coffee. You can find these in local bakeries and pasalubong centers.

Don't forget to sample dried mangoes, a popular Cebuano product. While available nationwide, Cebu's dried mangoes are often considered superior in quality and taste. They make for a convenient and delicious snack or gift. Exploring the local markets and food stalls will offer you a genuine taste of Cebu's rich culinary heritage.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cebu City

Cebuano culture is warm and hospitable, with a strong sense of community. Filipinos are generally friendly and respectful, so a polite demeanor and a smile go a long way. When visiting religious sites like churches, dress modestly out of respect. Learning a few basic Cebuano phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) can also be appreciated by locals.

When it comes to safety, Cebu City is generally safe for tourists, but it's always wise to exercise caution, especially in crowded areas. Be aware of your surroundings, keep your valuables secure, and avoid displaying expensive items openly. It's advisable to use reputable taxi services or ride-sharing apps for transportation. In case of emergencies, the local police hotline is 117.

For navigating the city and staying connected, several apps are highly recommended. Grab is essential for ride-hailing and food delivery, making transportation and dining convenient. Google Maps is invaluable for directions and exploring the city. For communication, ensure you have a reliable local SIM card or check your roaming options. Having these tools readily available will enhance your travel experience in Cebu.

I love the location. As the name implies, the hotel is centrally located. E Mall is right next to it, and everything is avaliable in the mall. However, the bathroom is very dark and the shower drain is clogged, so the floor floods while taking a shower.

Excellent courteous service from the staff gives this hotel a 5 star! The Filipino themed buffet is a must…I had an early flight, and requested for a breakfast pack, which I very much appreciated…the pool area at the top of the building has a great view of the city…will definitely stay here again.

The reception staff were accommodating and pleasant. Housekeeping cleaned well and timely replenished room amenities. The security at the entrance of the hotel were attentive to our arrival needs; gave helpful info about restaurants nearby and public transport available.

I love the location. As the name implies, the hotel is centrally located. E Mall is right next to it, and everything is avaliable in the mall. However, the bathroom is very dark and the shower drain is clogged, so the floor floods while taking a shower.

The hotel is in the historical downtown area of Cebu. You will find many guests from overseas. However the area around it is a not rough. We didn’t find the breakfast appealing either.

Everything was great from the staff, the food, the view at the pool and roof deck but what was needed to be improve is the cleanliness in the room. It's kinda dusty and when we checked in there was a cockroach greeted us and the next day almost check out I saw one walking on the bathroom floor.

Next to a shopping center with a store, food, mcdonalds, etc. I loved the fresh pancakes they had during breakfast. No hot water in the shower. I would stay here again.
