Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Metro Manila is the most common and efficient method. Domestic flights from major cities like Cebu, Davao, or Palawan typically range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000, depending on the airline, booking time, and season. From NAIA, you can take a taxi, a ride-sharing service, or a pre-booked airport transfer to Makati, which usually costs between PHP 300 and PHP 500 and takes about 30-60 minutes, traffic permitting. Planning your trip in advance by securing your book flight is always recommended.

If you are traveling from nearby provinces in Luzon, bus travel is a more economical option. Buses from Northern Luzon (e.g., Baguio) or Southern Luzon (e.g., Batangas, Quezon) arrive at various terminals in Metro Manila. Fares typically range from PHP 400 to PHP 900. From these terminals, you would then need to take a taxi, ride-sharing service, or local public transport like jeepneys or buses to reach Makati. Travel time by bus can vary significantly, from 4 to 8 hours or more, depending on the origin and traffic.

Driving to Makati is also an option for those coming from accessible provinces. Major expressways like the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) connect to Metro Manila's road network. Toll fees will apply, and the journey can take several hours. Navigating Metro Manila's traffic requires patience, but using GPS navigation apps can help guide you to your destination within Makati.

Best Time to Visit Makati

The Philippines experiences a tropical climate, and Makati is no exception. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it more comfortable for outdoor activities and exploring the city. Temperatures typically range from 25°C to 35°C.

The period from December to February is often considered the peak tourist season due to the cooler temperatures and festive holiday atmosphere. While the weather is pleasant, expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodations and flights. If you prefer fewer crowds and slightly warmer weather, the shoulder months of November and March to April can also be excellent choices for a visit.

The wet season, from May to October, brings frequent rain showers, which can sometimes be heavy and prolonged. While this season offers lower prices and fewer tourists, it's important to be prepared for potential disruptions to outdoor plans due to the weather. However, the rain often brings a refreshing coolness, and indoor attractions remain fully accessible.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No visit to the Philippines is complete without indulging in Adobo, the unofficial national dish. This savory and tangy stew, typically made with chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a staple in Filipino households and restaurants. Its comforting flavors and tender meat make it a beloved classic that you can find in many eateries around Makati, from casual carinderias to more upscale dining establishments.

Another must-try is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup that offers a refreshing contrast to richer dishes. Made with a tamarind base and loaded with vegetables and your choice of meat (pork, beef, fish, or shrimp), Sinigang is known for its distinct sourness that awakens the palate. It’s a perfect dish for a warm day or when you crave something hearty yet invigorating.

For those who enjoy grilled specialties, Lechon Kawali is an absolute delight. This dish features deep-fried pork belly with incredibly crispy skin and succulent meat. Served with a side of soy-vinegar dipping sauce, it’s a rich and satisfying treat that showcases the Filipino love for perfectly cooked pork. It’s a popular choice for celebrations and everyday meals alike.

Finally, don't leave without trying Halo-Halo for dessert. This iconic Filipino treat is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s a colorful and refreshing dessert that perfectly caps off any Filipino meal, offering a symphony of textures and sweet flavors that are uniquely its own.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and respect for elders. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor and a friendly smile go a long way. It's customary to use "po" and "opo" when speaking to older individuals or those in positions of authority, showing deference. Understanding and respecting these simple customs will enhance your interactions and overall experience in Makati.

When it comes to safety, Makati is generally considered one of the safer cities in Metro Manila, especially in areas like Salcedo Village. However, it's always wise to remain aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places like markets or public transport. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, particularly at night.

In case of emergencies, the local police hotline is 117. For medical emergencies, Makati Medical Center is a reliable option. It's also advisable to have the contact details of your hotel readily available. Familiarizing yourself with the general layout of the area you are staying in can also contribute to a feeling of security and ease of navigation.

To make your trip smoother, consider downloading a few essential apps. Grab is indispensable for ride-hailing and food delivery, offering convenience and competitive pricing. Google Maps is crucial for navigation, helping you find your way around the city and estimate travel times. For communication, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used by Filipinos to stay connected with friends and family.

got in very late, first they couldn't find reservation, then I got to the room and found no towels and no hot water , kettle, which the rooms have always had before. I've always had a good experience here in the past, so I'll consider this an exception to the rule.

The room was unkept and old. Had a a 2 night reservation and I didn’t even stay a night. I wasn’t refunded due to me purchasing the reservation through Expedia.

this is incredible value for the price -- a one-bedroom suite with kitchenette for $40 a night, including breakfast, in a great location. Walking distance to many embassies, good restaurants nearby.
