I stayed at Ong Bun Pension House for a few hours on my first and penultimate day in my Iloilo visit. I'm a solo traveler and this has been a really good choice. The staff were kind and hospitable. The area is safe and near the city tourists spots. I tried the fan room and the executive room. With the fan room, you will be getting a simple room and a shared bathroom. I chose this room since I only stayed at the city for hours and then went to the Gigantes tour. If you have the budget to do so, just choose the executive room since it's clean and comfier due to the air conditioning and your own private bathroom. Also, they offer airport transfers. As of my visit, it costs around PHP600 and it's exclusively just you. Booking in the app has been incredibly convenient as apparently, this place is quite popular for last-minute reservations and some didn't have a room anymore due to the place being fully booked. So it's a necessity to book in advance rather than doing it last minute.

Your Travel Guide to Iloilo City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Iloilo City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most efficient way to reach Iloilo City from Manila is by air. Numerous flights operate daily between Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and Iloilo International Airport (ILO). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the airline and booking time, but budget-friendly options can often be found if you book in advance. You can easily book your flight on Traveloka.

For travelers coming from other major Philippine cities like Cebu or Davao, direct flights to Iloilo are also available. These flights offer a convenient way to connect to the Western Visayas region. If direct flights are not available, you might need to connect through Manila. Always check flight schedules and prices to find the most suitable option for your travel dates.

If you prefer a more scenic and potentially budget-friendly journey, bus travel is an option, though it is considerably longer. Buses depart from various terminals in Metro Manila, such as Cubao and Pasay, heading to Iloilo City. The trip involves a ferry crossing and can take anywhere from 18 to 24 hours. Bus fares typically range from PHP 1,500 to PHP 2,500, depending on the class of service.

Best Time to Visit Iloilo City

The ideal time to visit Iloilo City for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and lower chances of rain, making it perfect for exploring the city's outdoor attractions, historical sites, and nearby islands. The cooler months within this period, from November to February, offer particularly pleasant weather.

The period from June to October is considered the wet season, characterized by frequent rainfall and the possibility of typhoons. While you might find fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices during this time, outdoor activities and travel plans could be disrupted by inclement weather. If you do choose to visit during these months, it's advisable to stay updated on weather forecasts and have flexible plans.

Food and Dining Near Iloilo City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Iloilo is renowned as the "Food Capital of the Philippines," and a culinary journey here is essential. One dish you absolutely must try is La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup with pork, shrimp, and vegetables, famously originating from the La Paz district. Its rich, savory broth is a true taste of Iloilo.

Another local delicacy is KBL, which stands for Kadyos, Baboy, at Langka. This unique stew features pigeon peas, pork, and young jackfruit simmered in a flavorful broth, often with a hint of sourness from batuan fruit. The combination of ingredients creates a complex and satisfying flavor profile that is distinctly Ilonggo.

Don't leave Iloilo without sampling their fresh seafood. Given its coastal location, the city offers an abundance of delicious seafood dishes. Grilled fish, prawns, and oysters are commonly available and prepared in various ways, showcasing the natural flavors of the ocean. Many local eateries and restaurants serve these specialties.

For a sweet treat, try Iloilo's version of Pancit Molo. Unlike other pancit dishes, this is a savory soup dumpling filled with ground pork and shrimp, served in a rich chicken broth. It's a comforting and flavorful dish that is a staple in Ilonggo households and restaurants.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Iloilo City

Ilonggos are known for their hospitality and gentle demeanor. A common greeting is "Maayong adlaw" (Good day). It's polite to use "po" and "opo" when speaking to elders or those in authority, showing respect. Dress modestly when visiting churches and other religious sites.

Iloilo City is generally considered a safe place for travelers. However, like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or at night. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. In case of emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A ride-hailing app can be useful for getting around the city, alongside local jeepney route apps if you plan to use public transport. A reliable map application is also indispensable for navigation. For booking accommodations and attractions, Traveloka is your go-to app.

This hotel is very disappointing if not worst in all hotels that I booked internationally and locally. I booked for a room for my girlfriend with a size of 12 sqm in the website but what they gave her upon arrival looked like 6 sqm. Only and the floor looks dirty. Just see the photo I included. Her room was on the 5th floor without elevator and no WiFi. You should have mentioned that this hotel has no elevator and no WiFi. So, my girlfriend just decided to stay on her friend's house rather than sleep on that hotel. Never again I will book on that hotel.

Not recommended to stay during Dinagyang festival. Very crowded and hard to go out. No water heater and very small room. Don't get an extra bed, it will be crowded. Not an executive room and not as what the picture shows. No elevator. Tiring to go up and down from the hotel if you have big luggages.

It 's too hot to stay in the Fan Room given the fact that it 's already summer time. The wall fan on my room was too noisy if set to the maximum. Overal, it is still good experience to have and the location is very convenient.

My room looked nothing like the ones on their promotional materials. The photos look nice but the place looks sketchy upon entry and inside the room. The hallways needed more cleaning and my bedsheet was rough. The bathroom also stinks. But given the price, I shouldn't have expected too much.

It 's located in the city so it 's very convenient to travel to and from your destination. Tho our room arrangements were crazily misunderstood at first (we arrived at 11pm expecting the 2 rooms we booked, they only reserved 1 double room so they looked for alternative) nonetheless, they fixed the issue the next morning. They clean the room everyday in our 5-day stay.

Overall its oki the bed was big but area was a bit tight not good for 2 person in which I book for 2pax. The comfort room was oki hopefully they can provide soap and shampoo for travellers like me but glad I bring some. The only downside is the aircon was noisy there was a sound coming from I can't concentrate on sleeping its sounds crepy. The room was 311A. The linen I think it was used there was a stain maybe a oil or something same goes with pillows I found one in 3.

The reception personnel are not accomodating, not welcoming, rude and snob. If you ask something, They only say, wait for this person, Why? They can't answer my questions about my accommodation. I check in 2PM but I enter my room already 4PM. I'm already tired of travelling but still they make me wait for 2hours. I will not recommend it.

It 's good but sometimes opening the door using your extra key even when I'm inside is not a good thing, sometimes could disturb us from sleeping. I will call when I need something. But overall, I love it, it 's very affordable, accessible and comfortable. Thanks.

It was a nice place, heart of the city, malls, and food centers are within walking distance.

They served the food quickly when we ordered and it's really in the city proper so it's very convenient.
