Your Travel Guide to Calasiao as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Calasiao from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from Metro Manila, the most common way to reach Calasiao is by bus. Numerous bus companies operate routes heading north, with many stopping in or passing through Dagupan, which is very close to Calasiao. The journey typically takes around 4 to 6 hours, depending on traffic and the specific bus route. Bus fares are generally affordable, making it a budget-friendly option for many Filipinos.

Alternatively, you can book flight tickets to Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga or Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) in Manila. From either airport, you would then need to arrange for onward transportation, such as a bus or a private car service, to Calasiao. This option is faster for the initial travel leg but may involve more complex logistics and potentially higher costs.

Driving your own vehicle is also a viable option, especially for groups or families. The North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) provide a relatively smooth drive towards Pangasinan. From Tarlac, you would continue on MacArthur Highway, which leads directly to Calasiao. The total driving time from Manila is approximately 4 to 5 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

Best Time to Visit Calasiao

The climate in Calasiao, like much of the Philippines, is tropical. The dry season, generally from November to April, offers the most pleasant weather for exploring. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. This period is considered peak season, so expect more crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices.

The wet season runs from May to October. While this period brings rainfall, it's not constant and often comes in the form of heavy, short-lived downpours, usually in the afternoon. Visiting during the wet season can be advantageous if you're looking for fewer crowds and potentially better deals on hotels and flights. The landscape also appears greener and more lush during these months.

For a balance of good weather and fewer tourists, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as late October or early November, or late April to early May. These periods often provide a good compromise, with generally favorable weather conditions and a more relaxed atmosphere compared to the peak season. Regardless of when you visit, always check the weather forecast closer to your travel dates.

Food and Dining Near Calasiao — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Pangasinan is renowned for its culinary offerings, and Calasiao is no exception. A must-try is the local delicacy, *Puto Calasiao*. These small, soft, and slightly sweet rice cakes are a beloved snack and dessert. They are often sold in stacks and are perfect with a cup of coffee or as a sweet treat any time of day. You can find these readily available in local markets and bakeries.

Another regional specialty you should seek out is *Bangus* (milkfish), which Pangasinan is famous for. Whether grilled, fried, or prepared as *Daing na Bangus* (marinated and fried), the fresh, locally sourced milkfish offers a distinctively delicious taste. Many restaurants in the area will feature various preparations of this popular fish, showcasing its versatility and flavor.

For those who enjoy savory dishes, *Sinigang na Baboy* or *Sinigang na Baka* are always a comforting choice. This sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth, is a staple in Filipino cuisine and is widely available in local eateries. The tangy broth combined with tender meat and fresh vegetables makes for a hearty and satisfying meal, perfect for any occasion.

Don't forget to try *Kare-Kare*, a rich stew made with oxtail, tripe, and vegetables in a thick peanut sauce, usually served with *bagoong* (shrimp paste). While available nationwide, experiencing a regional variation can offer a unique taste. Many local carinderias and restaurants in Calasiao and nearby Dagupan will serve this popular Filipino dish, providing a taste of home with a local touch.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Calasiao

Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and the people of Calasiao are no different. A common local custom is the practice of *pagmamano*, where younger individuals show respect to elders by taking their hand and touching it to their forehead. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor and a friendly smile go a long way. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people.

When it comes to safety, Calasiao is generally a safe place for travelers. However, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets or bus terminals. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. For emergencies, local police can be reached at their hotline numbers, which are usually available through quick online searches or by asking your hotel.

For seamless travel, having a few essential apps on your smartphone can be very helpful. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are useful for transportation within the region, though availability might vary. Navigation apps such as Google Maps are indispensable for finding your way around and locating points of interest. Communication apps like WhatsApp or Messenger are great for staying in touch with family and friends back home.

Consider downloading a currency converter app if you plan on shopping extensively or comparing prices. Local weather apps can also provide real-time updates on conditions, helping you plan your daily activities accordingly. Having these tools readily accessible will enhance your travel experience and ensure you can navigate Calasiao and its surroundings with greater ease and confidence.

The hotel tried to cancel my advance booking of one month on the day itself of the accommodation, less than 3 hours before check in. I did not agree with this and insisted that they accommodate us. They agreed but took the breakfast off the deal in exchange for a free bedding. One staff knew how to handle the issue, the rest were too unaccommodating. The room was ok but I had to ask for someone to do a final sweeping. The elevator and carpets are too stinky.

Three main things (on top of other things) that gave us bad experience: 1. We were expecting the room to be clean, but I saw 2 dead cockroaches in different corners of the room. Glad they weren't alive at least. 2. One of main amenities that your hotel offers is the Free Wifi. Apparently, the wifi 'doesn't reach our room'. 3. We requested for 2 additional pillows but we never got it. Called again to follow up, still no additional pillows. These are actually just basic things that are expected from a hotel. It's expected to be clean, prompt, and accurate on the features and services that they offer. I'm hoping that this review will actually reach the management of the hotel and do something about the issue that are possibly being experienced by other guests as well.

The aircon was so noisy, I had to switch it off for me to fall asleep. My partner would just then turn it on when I’m already sleeping. The mini refrigerator was a nice touch but it smells and barely closes. The towels of the previous guest was still in the cabinet when we got there. Food made my partner’s stomach upset; he had to file for a sick leave the day after our stay here. I guess the price is also too much for the service we got. We know of some hotels nearby that are cheaper and has better service. They were just all fully booked that time. We expected too much for its price. I know it’s an old hotel but the problems are easy fix. I hope the staff and the management could address these.

Our room is quite dirty and smelly. My friends and i booked several rooms for our High School reunion and used the function room at the 6th floor for our program. We were left on our own immediately after the buffet was served. We wanted drinking water but nobody was no longer around to serve it. More distressing is the great discomfort one gets while using the so called "rest rooms".

The hotel's location was very convenient. It was a good starting point to the different sites of the city. The booking also included buffet dinner and breakfast. The hotel may look quite old, but the room we got (214) was very clean and comfortable. The staff was also very accommodating to our requests for assistance, especially with the bus schedules. I am sure to stay in this hotel again if ever I find myself in the area.

Location is ok but the amenities are bad. The bed mattress and linen, the bathroom, the windows are all so ancient. The bathroom ceiling for both rooms we occupied have big damages and we can see the pipes and pipelines. And the smell in the bedrooms are bad too. Hoping this would sound an alarm to improve the hotel amenities and service.

This hotel is perfect for families. The buffet dinner and breakfast was a big plus. The room and building facilities are quite old but they're clean. Staffs are so accommodating and kind too.

I highly recommend this place for those who have plans on getting their passport at Department of Foreign Affairs. It's quite far from the tourist spots here in Pangasinan. Also they serve free buffet dinner and breakfast, which I think for me is cost saving.
