Your Travel Guide to Davao City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Davao City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Davao City from Manila is most efficiently done by air. Numerous airlines operate daily flights connecting the capital to Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO). Flight durations typically range from 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but budget-friendly options are often available, especially during off-peak periods.

For travelers coming from other major Philippine cities like Cebu or Iloilo, direct flights to Davao are also common. These flights are generally shorter than those from Manila. If you prefer land travel, long-haul bus services are available from various points in Mindanao, but this is a considerably longer journey, often spanning many hours. Driving your own vehicle is also an option, involving extensive travel across Mindanao's road networks.

When considering your travel budget, remember to factor in potential airport terminal fees and transportation costs from the airport to your accommodation. For instance, a taxi or ride-sharing service from Davao Airport to Panorama Summit Hotel will incur a separate charge. Planning your transport in advance can help manage these costs effectively.

Best Time to Visit Davao City

Davao City enjoys a tropical climate year-round, meaning you can expect warm temperatures and humidity regardless of when you visit. The city experiences two main seasons: a dry season typically from March to May, and a wet season from June to October. However, Davao is known for being outside the typhoon belt, making it less prone to severe weather disturbances compared to other parts of the Philippines.

The peak tourist season generally coincides with major holidays and festivals, such as the Kadayawan Festival in August, which celebrates the city's indigenous heritage. During this time, expect higher hotel rates and larger crowds. For a more relaxed and potentially budget-friendly trip, consider visiting during the shoulder months or the less crowded periods of the wet season, keeping in mind that occasional rain showers are to be expected.

For travelers who wish to enjoy outdoor activities and explore the city's natural attractions, the dry season months from March to May offer the most favorable weather conditions with less rainfall. However, even during the wet season, rain showers are often brief and followed by sunshine, allowing for plenty of opportunities to sightsee and enjoy the city's offerings.

Food and Dining Near Davao City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Davao City is a culinary delight, offering a range of flavors that reflect its diverse cultural influences. A must-try for any Filipino traveler is the Kinilaw na Tanigue, a local take on ceviche. Fresh, raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili, offering a tangy and refreshing appetizer that perfectly complements the tropical climate. You can find excellent versions in many local eateries.

Another local specialty that showcases Davao's agricultural bounty is the Durian. While its strong aroma is polarizing, its creamy texture and unique sweet-and-savory taste are an acquired pleasure for many. Try it fresh during its season, or sample durian-flavored candies, pastries, and ice cream available throughout the city. It's an experience that truly defines Davao's food scene.

For those who enjoy seafood, grilled tuna belly is a popular dish. Davao is known for its fresh catch, and the tuna belly, when grilled to perfection, is tender, flavorful, and often served with a variety of dipping sauces. Pair it with steamed rice and a side of local vegetables for a complete and satisfying Filipino meal. Many restaurants along the coast or in the city center offer this delicacy.

Don't leave Davao without trying the local version of La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup. While variations exist across the Philippines, Davao's rendition often features a rich, flavorful broth packed with pork, shrimp, and vegetables. It’s a comforting and filling dish, perfect for a hearty lunch or a late-night meal, and readily available in local carinderias and restaurants.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Davao City

Davao City is known for its generally peaceful environment and the politeness of its residents. Locals are typically friendly and welcoming. When interacting, a simple "po" and "opo" (yes, respectfully) goes a long way. It's also customary to dress modestly when visiting religious sites. Understanding and respecting local customs will enhance your interactions and overall experience.

Safety is a priority in Davao City, and it is considered one of the safer urban centers in the Philippines. However, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, avoid displaying expensive items openly, and keep your valuables secure. For emergencies, the local police hotline is readily available.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around the city. Ride-sharing apps such as Grab are widely used for convenient transportation. For communication, ensure you have a messaging app like WhatsApp or Messenger installed to stay connected with friends and family.

The room was in good condition. And the location isn’t too bad. But the staff was kind of aloof. Also the hotel as a whole makes good use of the “angles” online. It doesn’t look nearly as good in person especially the room. Also the rooms have no fridge or anything to heat up food. You can stay at better hotels in Manila for the price you pay here.

I recently stayed at Panorama Summit Hotel in Buhangin, Davao. While the staff was friendly, the hotel needs some upgrades, especially in cleanliness and decor. It would be great to have disposable slippers for guests. Also, the location can be tricky due to heavy traffic at the intersection.

It is on of those hotels that doesn't update their facilities. Water pressure is awful. There are no sheer curtains on top of the thick ones. So, it is either light or complete darkness. No vegetarian options for breakfast or a la carte.

Great dining at the restaurant and first hot shower in weeks! The hotel does not allow outside food until the restaurant closes at 10 pm so we feared high prices but everything was reasonable and delicious. It is now one of our favorites in Davao. We were there for only a few hours arriving after dark and leaving before dawn but the staff was friendly and helpful. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable.

First, let me say that the staff were always courteous, respectful and professional. The restaurant food was also very good. However, I gave Panorama Summit Hotel a 2 star rating because I was charged an additional PHP100 for requesting an additional bath towel and PHP100 for requesting two bottles of water. Who does that?! I have stayed in countless hotels in different countries and the US and have NEVER been charged for requesting an extra towel. Hand towels and wash cloths are not provided. Also, bottled water is often provided by many hotels free of charge. The water pressure in the shower was very low. In my opinion, I would NEVER recommend Panorama Summit Hotel to any family member or anyone else for that matter.

If you want an affordable and safe property, this is for you. If you are looking for a nice hotel in a large city with all the amenities, it is a disappointment. Reminded me of hotel type in the provinces.

The staff was friendly and attentive. The air conditioning worked well. The common areas were clean and well kept. The room we had did have some issues. The shower head was broken and the tub had a crack in the bottom of it that was covered up with an anti slip tub mat.

The one thing that’s today in this hotel was the friendliness efficiency of the reception team made you feel part of the family The hotel was exceptionally clean throughout The breakfast let itself down in my opinion as it didn’t really cater for the international guest mainly for the local guest but that’s not a big issue I really enjoyed my stay and all of the staff were very friendly and helpful and once again the hotel was spotless throughout
