Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For many Filipinos, Manila is a familiar destination, but for those coming from other regions, understanding travel options is key. Flying into Manila is the most common and often the quickest method. Major Philippine cities like Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo have frequent flights to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). Fares can vary significantly, but booking in advance, especially outside of peak seasons, can secure cheaper tickets, with prices potentially starting from PHP 2,000 for a one-way trip.

If you prefer land travel or are coming from nearby provinces in Luzon, buses are a widely available and economical option. Numerous bus companies operate routes to Metro Manila's various terminals. Travel times can range from 4 to 10 hours or more, depending on your origin. Bus fares typically fall between PHP 800 to PHP 1,500, offering a more relaxed pace for those who enjoy the journey. Planning your bus trip allows you to book flight tickets for your return journey with ease.

For those driving their own vehicles, Manila is accessible via the country's extensive highway network, including the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX). Be prepared for toll fees, which can add up depending on your route. Navigating within Metro Manila itself requires patience due to traffic, but having your own car offers flexibility for exploring beyond the immediate city center.

Best Time to Visit Manila

Manila experiences a tropical climate, characterized by high temperatures and humidity year-round. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, you'll encounter less rainfall, making it more pleasant for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The cooler months within this period, from December to February, offer slightly more comfortable temperatures, averaging around 28-30 degrees Celsius.

The wet season, from May to October, brings frequent rain showers and typhoons, which can disrupt travel plans and limit outdoor excursions. While you might find fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices during this time, it's essential to be prepared for sudden downpours. If you choose to visit during the wet season, having indoor activities planned and checking weather forecasts regularly is advisable.

For those looking to experience local festivals and events, timing your visit around specific dates can add another layer to your trip. However, be aware that major holidays and school breaks (like Christmas and Holy Week) are peak travel times, meaning higher prices and larger crowds. For a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting in late November or early March.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Manila is a culinary playground, offering a diverse range of flavors that reflect its rich history and cultural influences. No visit is complete without trying Adobo, the unofficial national dish. Whether it's chicken or pork, simmered in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, its savory and tangy profile is a comforting taste of home for many Filipinos. You can find excellent versions in local eateries and even in more upscale restaurants.

Another must-try is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth and a choice of meat like pork, beef, or fish, along with an assortment of vegetables. Its distinct sourness is incredibly refreshing, especially on a warm day. For a richer, more complex flavor, seek out Kare-Kare, a stew made with oxtail and vegetables in a thick, savory peanut sauce, traditionally served with bagoong (shrimp paste) on the side.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is the ultimate Filipino dessert. This colorful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream is a delightful treat that offers a burst of different textures and flavors in every spoonful. You'll find it readily available in most restaurants and dessert stalls across Manila. Exploring these culinary delights is an integral part of the Manila experience.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Understanding local customs can greatly enhance your interactions in Manila. Filipinos are generally known for their hospitality and politeness. Using "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority is a sign of respect. Always greet people warmly, and be mindful of personal space, though it can be limited in crowded areas. Bargaining is common in markets, but always do so respectfully.

When it comes to safety, like any major city, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places like markets and public transport. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. It's advisable to use reputable taxi services or ride-sharing apps. For emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. Having these numbers readily accessible can provide peace of mind.

To navigate Manila more effectively, several apps can be incredibly useful. Waze or Google Maps are essential for real-time traffic updates and navigation. Ride-sharing apps like Grab are widely used for convenient and often more affordable transportation compared to traditional taxis. For communication, ensure you have a reliable local SIM card or an international roaming plan. Consider downloading a translation app if you're not fluent in Tagalog, although English is widely spoken.

Very classy hotel. Good location. Staff is attentive including Pearl and Mia who delivered speedy check in and check outs. Seth is a concierge extraordinaire due to his exemplary training at Lyseum. Tight security. Close to Roxas boulevard and plenty of action. 20 minute drive from the airport. Good for single travelers and couples. Breakfast was excellent especially with Gerry serving me coffee and Nicole greeting us. A/C works well but takes 20 minutes or so to get going. Shower is nice with good pressure and hot water. This will be my new go-to spot when I come through Manila.

The area around the hotel is unsafe to walk at night. There are a huge amount of beggars and people trying to sell you things. Vagrants sleep on the streets

Bedding and sheets were stained and ripped. No iron available in the room, I had to request iron and was only permitted limited time to use and return iron.

I’ve stayed here numerous time and it’s always been great! They renovated the rooms a few years back, so they look amazing. The hotel is close to shopping, eating, and drinking venues.

Exactly as advertised. I have stayed in places that oversell and under deliver. This place was comfortable, friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet was also a great bonus.

Newly renovated room. 5 minutes walk to Robinsons Malate. Internet is fast. Unfortunately non-smoking room smells cigarette. Staff offered to put ionizer but still has little but smell on it. Buffet rice breakfast not much viand such as corned beef, ham and eggs. Overall we had comfortable stay.
