Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Reaching Manila from other major cities in the Philippines is most efficiently done by air. Major carriers operate frequent flights to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) from destinations like Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, and Cagayan de Oro. Fares can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 or more, depending on the season and how far in advance you book. Travel time is typically between 1 to 2 hours. It's always wise to book flight tickets early for better prices.

For those traveling from nearby provinces or looking for a more economical option, bus travel is a viable alternative. Numerous bus companies ply routes to Manila's various terminals from Luzon's northern and southern regions. A bus journey from Baguio, for instance, can take around 5 to 7 hours and cost approximately PHP 500 to PHP 800. From Bicol, expect a longer journey of 8 to 10 hours with similar fare ranges.

Driving to Manila is also an option for those residing within Luzon. Major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect to the city. Be prepared for potential traffic congestion, especially as you approach the metropolitan area. Toll fees will apply, varying based on your starting point and the specific routes taken. Planning your route and checking traffic conditions beforehand is recommended.

Best Time to Visit Manila

The climate in Manila is tropical, characterized by high temperatures and humidity throughout the year. The most pleasant time to visit is generally during the cooler, dry season, which runs from November to February. During these months, temperatures are slightly lower, and rainfall is minimal, making it ideal for exploring the city's outdoor attractions and enjoying its vibrant street life.

The hot dry season follows from March to May, where temperatures can soar, and humidity levels increase significantly. While still a popular time for travel, especially during Holy Week, visitors should be prepared for the heat and stay hydrated. The wet season, from June to October, brings frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy downpours, particularly in the afternoons. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower prices, be ready for potential travel disruptions due to weather.

For Filipino travelers, understanding these seasonal patterns helps in planning a trip that aligns with their comfort preferences and desired activities. Whether you prefer the cooler months or don't mind the heat, Manila offers a unique experience year-round, with its rich culture and dynamic urban environment always ready to be explored.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Manila is a culinary playground, offering a diverse range of flavors that reflect its rich history and cultural influences. A must-try for any Filipino traveler is Adobo, the unofficial national dish. Whether it's chicken or pork, simmered in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, its savory and tangy profile is a comforting taste of home. You can find excellent versions in local eateries and even in some restaurants near Pearl Lane Hotel.

Another iconic dish is Sinigang, a sour soup that comes in various forms, most commonly with pork, shrimp, or fish, and flavored with tamarind, guava, or other souring agents. Its distinct tartness is incredibly refreshing, especially on a warm Manila day. Look for restaurants that offer this hearty and flavorful soup for an authentic Filipino dining experience.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-halo is an absolute delight. This popular dessert is a colorful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's the perfect way to cool down and indulge after a day of exploring. Many local dessert shops and restaurants serve this beloved treat, often with regional variations.

Don't leave Manila without trying Lechon, a whole roasted pig known for its incredibly crispy skin and succulent meat. While often a centerpiece for celebrations, you can find delicious lechon portions in many carinderias and restaurants across the city. The rich, savory flavor is something distinctive and evidence of Filipino culinary expertise.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Understanding local customs can greatly enhance your experience in Manila. Filipinos are generally known for their hospitality and politeness. Using "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority is a sign of respect. When visiting churches or more traditional establishments, dress modestly. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people.

When it comes to safety, like any large city, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure and be cautious of pickpockets, especially in crowded areas like markets and public transportation. It's advisable to use reputable taxi services or ride-sharing apps. For emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. Having the hotel's contact information readily available is also a good practice.

To navigate Manila more easily, several apps can be incredibly useful. Ride-sharing apps like Grab are essential for getting around the city conveniently and affordably. Google Maps is invaluable for navigation and finding directions. For foodies, apps like Zomato or local food blogs can help you discover highly-rated restaurants and eateries. Staying connected with a local SIM card or ensuring your roaming is activated will also be beneficial.

Still a decent hotel with good amenities: Good Wifi (but it did not work for one entire day), good Cable channels, in-room safe (which functions well). This time my Superior room came windowless so without any natural lights but it was good for sleeping. All in all it is a good budget hotel and good value (for what I paid). Breakfast is buffet and is fine (if you do not expect too much and if you remember this is PH).

When I first walked in room it reaked of cigarette smoke. Room boy sprayed room room but it still smelled. No other room to transfer to since they are fully booked. Room is very small with fridge. Bathroom is small also. The breakfast buffet consisted of rice, meatballs, french toast, and fried egg. The lady cook was using 1 frying pan to cook eggs so had to wait awhile for other guest eggs to be cooked. Won't be staying here again.

I have used this well located (in Malate), comfortable hotel several times and for what I pay I always feel I get good value, good nights sleep and never had a single complaint. Front desk usually let me check in early (around noon, when the standard check-in time in 2pm) and please bare with them as they slowly will you check you in (I have to admit that check-in is surprisingly SLOW!). Rooms are fitted with all the amenities: small fridge (minibar), good cable tv (small flat screen tv), in-room safe and window aircon. Bathroom is small but SUPERB (which tends to show that a small bathroom can a zillion times better than a poor big one). Breakfast is Buffet and quite decent (but do not expect more than that). All in all I will not hesitate to book this overall fine hotel again and again.

The things in this hotel is old. Hair dryer can only work for 15 seconds and stop. Awhile later can start again. Aircon control spoiled, can’t adjust temperature.

Everything is perfect. My only concern is the wifi connection. Its not that good, that I have to open the door just to have a good connection.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was pretty basic. Restaurant wasn’t open and ready on time in the morning though.

We booked in advance a 2 night stay in non smoking FAMILY room but we were assigned at the first night in a smoking family room apparently due to its unavailability..

This hotel is my alternative. Building is old and some facilities needs an overhaul. Bath towels are a sorry sight and needs to be replaced pronto. On the bright side it is walking distance to many restaurants and Robinson, a large shopping mall. Wifi is good on all floors. Value for money.

Friendly staff but the first room smelt bad, aircon was too old and probably needed to be replaced. The bigger room on the same floor was in better condition, I was more comfortable.
