Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Manila from other major Philippine cities is most efficiently done by air. Flights from Cebu, Davao, or other regional hubs typically land at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). Fares can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget airlines often offer flights for as low as PHP 1,500 to PHP 3,000 for a round trip if booked early. Travel time is usually between 1 to 2 hours.

For those coming from Luzon's neighboring provinces, bus travel is a common and economical option. Numerous bus companies operate routes to Manila's various terminals. Fares typically range from PHP 500 to PHP 1,500, depending on the distance and the type of bus service. Travel times can range from 6 to 12 hours or more for longer distances, making it a good choice for overnight journeys.

Driving to Manila is also feasible for those coming from nearby provinces. Major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect to the city. Be prepared for potential traffic congestion, especially as you approach the metropolitan area. Toll fees will apply, and it's advisable to check current rates before your trip. Planning your route and booking your flight or bus tickets in advance can help ensure a smoother journey.

Best Time to Visit Manila

The ideal time to visit Manila for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity and less rainfall, making it perfect for exploring the city's outdoor attractions and enjoying its vibrant street life. Temperatures usually range from the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius.

The period from December to February is often considered the most pleasant, with cooler temperatures and minimal rain. This is also peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for flights and accommodation. If you prefer fewer crowds and slightly warmer weather, the shoulder months of November and March to April can still offer excellent conditions for your visit.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Manila is complete without indulging in its rich culinary landscape. A must-try is

Adobo

, the unofficial national dish, featuring meat (usually chicken or pork) braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. You can find excellent versions in traditional Filipino restaurants and even in casual eateries across the city.

Another iconic dish is

Sinigang

, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth and a choice of meat or seafood, along with various vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. Its distinct tangy flavor is a beloved comfort food for many Filipinos and offers a refreshing taste.

For those with a sweet tooth,

Halo-Halo

is an essential dessert. This popular Filipino treat is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's the perfect way to cool down on a warm Manila day and is widely available in restaurants and dessert stalls.

Don't forget to sample

Lechon

, a whole roasted pig known for its crispy skin and succulent meat. While often a centerpiece for celebrations, many restaurants offer lechon portions for everyday enjoyment. The rich, savory flavor makes it a truly satisfying culinary experience that embodies Filipino festivity.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor and a smile go a long way. It's customary to use "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority as a sign of respect. Understanding basic greetings like "Magandang umaga" (Good morning) or "Salamat" (Thank you) can also be appreciated.

When it comes to safety in Manila, it's advisable to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, to avoid petty theft. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. It's also wise to use reputable transportation services, such as metered taxis or ride-sharing apps, and to be cautious of unsolicited offers from strangers.

For emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. It's also helpful to have the contact numbers of your embassy or consulate readily available. Staying informed about local news and advisories can also contribute to a safer travel experience. Having these contacts and information accessible can provide peace of mind during your stay.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around the city. Ride-sharing apps such as Grab are widely used for convenient and often more affordable transportation. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Viber are popular among locals. These tools can significantly streamline your navigation and daily activities in Manila.

Check-in closes at 22:00 so I was worried if my flight was delayed, I would miss check-in. Also, when I first approached the property, there was no way to enter, the gates were locked, there was no pushbutton so I felt stuck. I managed to catch the eye of the gardner who let me in. The staff were very friendly and helpful, they quickly changed my room because I wanted to be on a higher floor.. When I tried to take shower, there was no hot water. A member of staff quickly came, scratched his head a bit, eventually finding the power hadn't been turned on - it is the second light switch in the bathroom. Who'd have thought it would be a light switch?! Also, the aircon unit is old and not up to the job, this combined with a plastic covered mattess made for a sweaty night. I was once woken up by the guard dog, but to be fair, he's not a very barky dog. Prices in the restaurant are very reasonable, American breakfast for £2.50. Choices for dinner are very limited, omalette or sandwich is about it. You must try the calamansi juice - just gorgeous! It was a bit noisy with jeepneys accelerating past, they have the loudest exhausts in the world (with the possible exception of Cape Canaveral!), but that is hardly the hotel's fault.

Its tranquillity, greenery and gentle breeze in a very hectic, polluted district. The simple yet spacious rooms and communal areas are another attraction. I stayed here happily in 1995 and little has changed, save the new high rise that now surround it. A final positive aspect - for me at least - is that fellow guests are not here for sleaze.

The staff are always kind, friendly and willing to help. The grounds are well kept and maintains a peaceful atmosphere despite being located in the city. The location is also very convenient being within walking distance of the US embassy and a short taxi ride from the bureau of immigration.

It was a bit noisy with jeepneys accelerating past, they have the loudest exhausts in the world (with the possible exception of Cape Canaveral!), but that is hardly the hotel's fault.

what I like about the property is that it is near Landbank which is a walking distance. Also the familiarity with the property because it is where I have been staying everytime I have seminars at Landbank.

I usually stay at Pension Natividad for convenience, the place is just walking distance to my work related trip. I can stay in a cheaper place but what I always prefer staying here for the availability of a room for one/two person/s. No problem with cleanliness.
