Your Travel Guide to Coron as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Coron from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

The most common and convenient way to reach Coron from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Flights land at Francisco B. Reyes Airport (USU) in Busuanga, which serves Coron. Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific operate flights from Manila. Travel time is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but expect prices to range from PHP 3,000 to PHP 8,000 for a round trip if you book flight tickets strategically.

For those seeking a more budget-friendly option or preferring sea travel, ferries are available from Manila. These journeys are considerably longer, typically taking around 15 to 20 hours. The ferry is operated by companies like 2GO Travel. While it offers a different travel experience, it requires a significant time commitment. Bus travel is not a direct option to Coron itself, as it is an island municipality.

If you are traveling from other parts of Palawan, such as Puerto Princesa, you might consider a van transfer. These overland journeys can take several hours and often involve a ferry crossing or a combination of land and sea travel. For the most efficient travel, especially if time is a constraint, booking a flight is highly recommended. You can easily compare and book flights on Traveloka.

Best Time to Visit Coron

The dry season, from November to May, is generally considered the best time to visit Coron. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and minimal rainfall, which are ideal conditions for island hopping, diving, and other water activities that Coron is famous for. The peak tourist season falls between December and February, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and tours.

The shoulder months, such as November and May, can offer a good balance, with pleasant weather and fewer tourists compared to the absolute peak. The wet season runs from June to October, and while you might find lower prices and fewer crowds, there's a higher chance of experiencing rain and rough seas, which could lead to tour cancellations or disruptions. However, even during the wet season, many days are still sunny and suitable for exploration.

For Filipino travelers looking to experience Coron’s beauty without the peak season crowds, the periods just before or after the main rush are excellent choices. Planning your trip during these times can provide a more relaxed experience while still enjoying the best of what Coron has to offer. Always check weather forecasts closer to your travel dates, regardless of the season.

Food and Dining Near Coron — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Coron offers a delightful culinary scene that reflects its island setting and Filipino heritage. Seafood is, of course, a star attraction. Freshly grilled fish, prawns, and squid are readily available in local restaurants and markets. Don't miss trying *Kinilaw*, the Filipino version of ceviche, where raw fish is cured in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It’s a refreshing appetizer, perfect for the tropical climate.

Another must-try is *La Paz Batchoy*, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo but popular throughout the Philippines. In Coron, you can find local eateries serving this flavorful broth with pork, shrimp, and vegetables. It’s a comforting dish, especially after a day spent out on the water. For a taste of local snacks, try *Taho*, a sweet silken tofu dessert, often sold by vendors in the morning.

For a more substantial meal, look for *Adobo*, the national dish of the Philippines, which is a savory stew of meat (usually chicken or pork) braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. Many local eateries in Coron Town Proper will offer their own delicious versions. Exploring the local markets will also give you a chance to sample *Halo-Halo*, a popular Filipino dessert made with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, and jellies, topped with ice cream.

When dining in Coron, be open to trying dishes at smaller, local *carinderias* (eateries). These often offer authentic flavors at very affordable prices. Many tour packages also include lunch on the islands, typically featuring a spread of grilled seafood, rice, and fresh fruits, providing a convenient and delicious dining experience amidst stunning natural scenery.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Coron

Coron is a place where local culture is deeply connected to the sea and the land. Filipinos are known for their hospitality, so expect warm welcomes. It’s polite to greet locals with a smile and a friendly "Magandang umaga/hapon/gabi" (Good morning/afternoon/evening). When visiting churches or more traditional establishments, dress modestly out of respect.

Safety in Coron is generally good, especially in the tourist areas. However, as with any travel destination, it’s wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure, be aware of your surroundings, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. For emergencies, know the local numbers. The Philippine National Police (PNP) can be reached at 911. It’s also a good idea to have the contact details of your accommodation readily available.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is indispensable for navigation. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used. If you plan on booking tours or activities on the go, having the Traveloka app installed will give you access to a wide range of options. A currency converter app can also be helpful for managing your budget.

Remember to stay hydrated, especially during the hot months, and use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the delicate marine ecosystems. Embracing the local pace and being respectful of the environment and culture will greatly enhance your visit to this beautiful part of Palawan.

Staff were very courteous, cooperative and accommodating. Lyca, Malou, Janice and Rosemarie were very helpful and professionals. Inn was average, going up and down was quite dangerous especially for seniors like us because it is steep and slippery as water drips down due to cleaning of motorcycles on the road above. I suggested to one of the staff for the management to place side hand-rails or side stairs. As well, room doors are fragile and have no double lock which could easily be kicked and broken into.

I really appreciated how lovely the rooms and common spaces were; even the dorms look cute and lots of care to details is put in the decoration, it gives a very cozy vibe to the guest house! Prim looks better than some proper hotel I've stayed in in cities ! The daily house cleaning is very enjoyable, and I think quite rare for a dorm-type accommodation! The staff is lovely, helpful and accommodating. Breakfast included is quite alright! It's slighting outside of the city center, so it's very quiet and relaxing. On the downside, there was issues with water availability (which might not be the guesthouse's fault) and many times there was no running water in the shower and sink. Again I am not 100% if that were general shortage of the property's own issues. The most annoying for me was that the toilet was broken and we couldn't flush. A bucket was there to solve the issue, but many guest were not using it, OR water was off. This could be improved. Overall, compared to other similar hostel/guesthouse, I really enjoyed Prim and would stay there again; if the water issue was fixed, the place would be flawless!

I tried to amend my booking 5 days before due to delays in the ferry from El nido to Coron but trying to communicate with Prim was difficult. When arriving proved more difficulties checking in as the workers didnt speak english. Then onto the accomodation. The room didnt look bad at all it was nice and clean and had AC. Until i noticed the bed is literally two tiny planks of wood that don't even cover the whole of the bed then with a tiny matress to cover. Im a soldier and slept in some rough places but thats the worst bed of all. After asking for a queen and getting 2 single planks of wood i wasnt happy. No lid on the toilet bin which you have to disperse after pooing and nobody changed the bin for the days we were there, pretty disgusting.

It feels like home, the staff are friendly and courteous. The manager, Mr. Ben is very accomodating and helpful. A home away from home.
