Your Travel Guide to Samal Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Samal Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from Manila and other major Philippine cities, the most convenient way to reach Samal Island is by air to Davao City's Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO). Several airlines operate frequent flights from Manila, Cebu, and other key hubs. You can often find competitive fares, especially if you plan your trip in advance and utilize booking platforms to book flight tickets.

From Davao City, the journey to Samal Island involves a short ferry ride. You can take a taxi or a jeepney from the airport to Sasa Wharf or the Km. 11 Ferry Terminal. Ferries depart regularly for Babak Port on Samal Island, with the trip taking approximately 15 to 20 minutes. The cost of the ferry is quite affordable, making it an economical part of your travel.

Once you arrive at Babak Port, you can hire a tricycle or a motorcycle taxi (habal-habal) to take you to your specific destination on Samal Island, including Punta del Sol Beach Resort. While bus travel is an option for inter-island journeys within Mindanao, for reaching Samal Island from Luzon or Visayas, flying into Davao is the most practical and time-efficient method.

Best Time to Visit Samal Island

Samal Island enjoys a tropical climate, meaning it's generally warm and humid throughout the year. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers seeking sunny skies and calm seas is during the dry season, which typically runs from December to May. During these months, rainfall is less frequent, making it ideal for beach activities, island hopping, and exploring the island's natural attractions.

The period between June and November often brings more rainfall, characteristic of the Philippines' wet season. While you can still visit during these months, be prepared for occasional downpours, which might affect outdoor plans. However, the off-peak season can also mean fewer crowds and potentially lower prices for accommodation and tours, offering a different kind of appeal for some travelers.

For those planning specific activities like diving or snorkeling, checking local conditions is always recommended. However, generally, the dry season offers the most predictable and pleasant weather for a typical Samal Island vacation. Planning your visit during the months of March to May often provides a good balance of good weather and fewer crowds compared to the peak holiday periods.

Food and Dining Near Samal Island โ€” What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When visiting Samal Island, indulging in local Filipino cuisine is a highlight. You absolutely must try Kinilaw, a Filipino ceviche made with fresh raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It's a refreshing appetizer that perfectly captures the coastal flavors of the Philippines. Many local eateries and restaurants on the island will offer their own delicious versions.

Another dish to savor is Grilled Liempo, succulent pork belly marinated and grilled to perfection. The smoky flavor and tender texture make it a favorite among Filipinos. Pair it with a side of rice and a dipping sauce of soy sauce, calamansi, and chili for a truly satisfying meal. You'll find this staple at many carinderias and restaurants.

Don't leave without trying La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo but popular across the Philippines. It's a rich broth filled with pork, shrimp, vegetables, and crushed chicharon, perfect for a comforting meal, especially on a cooler evening or after a day of activities. For dessert, try Halo-Halo, a popular Filipino mixed-dessert made with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Samal Island

Filipino travelers visiting Samal Island will find the local culture warm and welcoming. Respect for elders and local customs is highly valued. When visiting religious sites or interacting with locals, dressing modestly is appreciated. Learning a few basic Tagalog or Cebuano phrases can also go a long way in fostering positive interactions.

Safety is generally good on Samal Island, but as with any travel, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep valuables secure, especially in crowded areas or when using public transport. It's advisable to inform someone of your itinerary, particularly if you plan on exploring remote areas. For emergencies, know the local police and hospital contact numbers, which can usually be obtained from your accommodation.

For convenience during your trip, consider downloading essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for getting around. Ride-hailing apps might have limited availability on the island itself, but they are useful in Davao City. A translation app can be helpful if you encounter language barriers, and a weather app will keep you updated on the day's conditions. Having a reliable communication app like WhatsApp or Messenger is also standard for staying in touch.

The experience is good but the common CR has no lock luckily we stayed on Monday and there are only less than 5 guests. Though we understand that the check in time is 2pm but I think they can just let us check in earlier as we just need to place our things there and proceed to our whole day Samal Inland Tour. All in all it is okay. ๐Ÿ‘

The room next to us was very noisy. They were drunk until 5am. We went there to relax but we end up being stressed. I just don't like the idea that the resort allowed such kind of activity most specially in that hour. They should have got a private room instead of the non-air rooms that is too close to each other.

We werenโ€™t able to check-in on our booked room and the water supply was insufficient. There were a lot of flies outside our room the next morning. The shore wasnโ€™t clean and you can see some unhygienic things floating. Overall we were unsatisfied with the place.

Room was okay in relation to the amount of money we have paid. We went there as walk in guest and was given a rate of 2160 for 2pax with bfast, room with AC. Luckily, when I checked traveloka, the rate was 2057 and there was an available promocode, less 600 so we have saved a lot. Their restaurant is only until 7:30pm for dinner. The following day, there was no in charge of their mini store, I couldnโ€™t buy a bottle of water. I suggest for them to include a free bottle of water for their in house guest, ๐Ÿ˜‰

Pleasant stay here in this resort, they are just few minutes away from wharf. Their service is above average and was able to meet our expectations. Remember that their resto closes at around 6 or 7PM so make sure you order your food before that time,. Beach is also clean, sand is not that powdery white but everything is well. Tricycle ride or habal-habal is the popular and most convenient way of transportation around the area. Price ranges from 50-500 depends on how far and how many are you in a group.

Long story short: do not stay here. It's not worth it. I booked this hotel. It had 3 stars and was pretty affordable. I was not expecting for it to be a fancy resort but I think it was reasonable to expect for it to be clean. First of all, the beach front was littered with trash. It was everywhere and was really off putting. I don't understand how, with the number of staff they have, they cannot even put anyone on trash duty?! They have a small patch of sand because the rest of the beach front was rocky but you cannot swim in there because of all the water bottles and plastic bags. They do not have adequate lighting so I did not feel safe walking around at night. The room was very small, which is not a big deal, but the mattress smelled, the air conditioning was not working properly, the water leaks into your room when you shower, and the restroom was cramped and had a musty, bad smell. The food was okay, it was not worth the price though. The only positive thing about this resort was the staff. They were nice, polite, and helpful. There are dogs around too, they were very affectionate and friendly. I only stayed for a night and then out of there. One of the worst resorts I've stayed in.

Clean, affordable, good food, good customer service. Far from the town. You need to ride a habal-habal for 15mins to reach the town.

The resort is very dirty! There are too many garbages surrounding the seashore! No one from the management or staff of the resort cleaned the garbages, until some of the guest are taking pictures of the garbages. The staff of the resort are very rude to their guests. Highly not recommendable!.

Tried the cheapest room and itโ€™s better to get the aircon rooms with breakfast instead itโ€™s better value for money.

Poor management. High cost rooms, very dirty. Their 2,200 room cost is just worth the 500.. dirty bathroom. Messy pales and no shower. Not worth the price.

My husband and I are very happy and thankful to all of the very friendly staffs of Punta del Sol. They did their best to accommodate our guests and assisted us on our Wedding Day. It was a perfect decision to choose Punta del Sol as our wedding venue. Their price is very affordable and the place is beautiful. Two thumbs up ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ‘ to Punta del Sol ๐Ÿ˜˜๐Ÿ˜˜

Food is great and the service crews are very helpful and welcoming. Appreciate that they called me when they found out that some valuable things were left in the room. Thank you very much!

One of the most unforgettable! ๐Ÿ˜† When we arrived at the place we did not expect that there was a problem with our in which we are not informed. Fortunately, the manager was kind enough to settle the issue for us to enjoy our stay. Customer service is superb! It was fantastic and we enjoy our stay. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

Awful... 1. Sink not working. 2. Water hardly worked at all had to ask 3 times in 1 day to get water to run. 3. They charge twice as much for food than the other resort. 4. Tiny sheet, didn't even fit small bed. 5. Many mosquitoes in room. 6. No wifi and only 3 terrible tv channels.
