Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipinos traveling to Manila from other parts of the country, flying is the most efficient method. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) from key cities such as Cebu, Davao, and Palawan. Flight durations typically range from 1 to 2 hours, with fares varying significantly based on booking time and season, but you can often find competitive prices if you book your flight in advance.

For travelers coming from Luzon, particularly from the northern or southern regions, bus travel is a common and economical option. Numerous bus terminals in Metro Manila serve routes from various provinces. A trip from Baguio, for instance, can take around 5-6 hours, while journeys from Bicol might extend to 8-10 hours. Bus fares are considerably lower than flights, making it a popular choice for budget-conscious travelers.

Driving to Manila is also feasible for those residing within accessible driving distance. Major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect to the city. Be prepared for potential toll fees and the city's characteristic traffic. Planning your route and checking real-time traffic conditions is advisable for a smoother journey.

Best Time to Visit Manila

The ideal time to visit Manila for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity and less rainfall, making it perfect for exploring the city's outdoor attractions, historical sites, and vibrant street life. The cooler months within this period, from December to February, offer particularly pleasant weather.

The wet season, from May to October, brings with it higher chances of rain, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours or typhoons. While this season can offer lower accommodation prices and fewer crowds, it might disrupt outdoor plans. If you choose to visit during this time, it's wise to have indoor activities planned and to stay updated on weather forecasts. Traveling during the shoulder months of November or April can offer a good balance of favorable weather and fewer crowds.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Manila is complete without indulging in its rich culinary landscape. A must-try is Adobo, the unofficial national dish, featuring meat (usually chicken or pork) braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. You can find excellent versions in traditional Filipino restaurants and even in casual eateries around Malate. Its savory and tangy profile is a true taste of home.

Another Filipino favorite is Sinigang, a sour soup typically made with tamarind broth and a choice of meat or seafood, along with various vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. The comforting, tangy flavor is perfect for any weather. Look for restaurants that offer authentic Sinigang for a genuine taste of this beloved dish.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is an iconic Filipino dessert that is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It's a refreshing treat, especially on a warm Manila day. Many local dessert shops and restaurants serve this popular cooler.

Consider also trying Lechon, a whole roasted pig known for its crispy skin and succulent meat. While often a centerpiece for celebrations, many restaurants offer Lechon portions for everyday dining. The rich, savory flavor is a culinary experience that many Filipinos cherish. Exploring local markets and carinderias can also lead you to discover other regional specialties and home-style cooking.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor and a smile go a long way. It's customary to use "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority as a sign of respect. While generally safe, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and to keep your valuables secure.

For safety, avoid displaying expensive items openly and be cautious of unsolicited offers or overly friendly strangers. It's advisable to use reputable transportation services, such as those booked through apps or official taxi stands. In case of emergencies, know that the national emergency hotline is 911. Having a local SIM card can also be beneficial for communication.

To enhance your travel experience in Manila, several apps are highly recommended. Grab is essential for booking rides and food delivery, making transportation and dining convenient. Waze or Google Maps are crucial for navigation, helping you to understand traffic conditions and find your way around the city efficiently.

Consider downloading a translation app if you plan to interact extensively in local dialects, although English is widely spoken in Manila. For staying updated on local news and events, news apps specific to the Philippines can be useful. Having these tools readily available on your smartphone will significantly streamline your exploration of Manila.

The room needs to be updated, the ac is not as cold as it used to and the ceiling fan are louder than usual. I have stayed at Red planet many times (same branch) over the years and it was good at first but this last check in, the room stayed very warm all the time even after leaving the ac on all day and coming in the room stil warm. Didn't bother reporting as me and hubby was out most of the time.

Was near to the museums. I did not know that it was in hookerville. Bunch of pokpoks and KTV with hookers and hooker massages. Noisy at night and noisy in mornings. While smoking cigarette outside was propositioned for KTV. Man had herpes all up on his face another had skin rashes as well. Filthy area wouldn't take the kids to this hotel. All in all I was happy to have hot water shower and a safe place to sleep

Clean hotel and great staff. The rooms are small. The location is not good, as it’s surrounded by bars with hostesses and an adult nightlife scene.

WYSIWYG. Generally good customer service. The place needs a bit of improvement but it delivers what is needed
