Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For travelers coming from major Philippine cities, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila is the most common and efficient method. Numerous airlines operate daily flights from key hubs like Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, and Cagayan de Oro. Fares can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book, but you can often find round-trip tickets for as low as PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 if you book your flight strategically.

If you prefer land travel or are coming from nearby provinces in Luzon, bus services are an excellent and economical option. Major bus companies offer regular trips to Manila's various terminals from destinations like Baguio, Pampanga, and Quezon. Bus fares typically range from PHP 500 to PHP 1,500, depending on the distance and the type of service (e.g., executive or regular). Travel times can range from 4 to 10 hours.

For those driving their own vehicles, Manila is accessible via a network of expressways and national highways. Major routes like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect the capital to the northern and southern parts of Luzon, respectively. Be prepared for toll fees, which can add up, and factor in potential traffic congestion, especially when entering the city proper. Planning your route and checking traffic conditions beforehand is advisable.

Best Time to Visit Manila

The climate in Manila is tropical, characterized by high temperatures and humidity throughout the year. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, you'll experience less rainfall and more sunshine, making it ideal for exploring the city's outdoor attractions and enjoying its many festivals.

The cooler months within the dry season, specifically from November to February, are particularly pleasant. Temperatures are slightly milder, and the humidity is more manageable, offering a comfortable environment for sightseeing and outdoor activities. This period is also popular for local holidays and celebrations, adding a festive atmosphere to your visit. However, it's also considered peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices.

The hot season, from March to May, sees temperatures rise significantly, with humidity also increasing. While it can be quite warm, this period is still viable for travel, especially if you plan to spend more time indoors in air-conditioned malls or museums. The rainy season, from June to October, brings frequent and sometimes heavy downpours. While this might disrupt outdoor plans, it also means fewer crowds and potentially lower prices for flights and hotels.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Manila is complete without indulging in its rich culinary landscape. A must-try is Adobo, the unofficial national dish. Whether it's chicken or pork, the savory and tangy combination of soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns is a flavor profile deeply loved by Filipinos. You can find excellent versions in local eateries and even in some of the more established restaurants around Ermita.

Another iconic dish is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth. It can feature pork, beef, fish, or shrimp, along with a variety of vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. The comforting warmth and distinct sourness of Sinigang make it a favorite, especially on cooler evenings or after a long day of exploring. Many Filipino households prepare this regularly, and restaurants offer their own delicious renditions.

For those who enjoy grilled specialties, Lechon is a celebratory dish that’s worth seeking out. This whole roasted pig, with its incredibly crispy skin and succulent meat, is a Filipino party staple. While a whole lechon might be too much for a solo traveler, many restaurants offer Lechon Kawali (deep-fried pork belly) or Lechon Manok (roasted chicken) as more accessible options that still capture the delicious essence of this beloved dish.

Don't forget to sample Pancit, the Filipino noodle dish that comes in countless variations. Whether it's Pancit Canton (stir-fried noodles with meat and vegetables) or Pancit Palabok (noodles topped with a shrimp-based sauce and various toppings), each type offers a unique and satisfying flavor experience. It's a versatile dish that can be enjoyed as a main course or as a shared appetizer.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Filipinos are generally respectful of elders and authority figures. When visiting religious sites like Ermita Church, dress modestly out of respect. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people.

When it comes to safety in Manila, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and be mindful of pickpockets. Avoid displaying expensive items openly. For transportation, use reputable taxi services or ride-sharing apps. If you encounter any emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. It's also a good idea to have the contact details of your hotel readily accessible.

To navigate Manila more easily, consider downloading a few essential apps. Google Maps or Waze are indispensable for navigation, providing real-time traffic updates and directions. Grab is the go-to app for ride-hailing services, food delivery, and even grocery shopping, making it incredibly convenient for getting around and accessing services. For communication, WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used for staying in touch with friends and family.

Understanding basic Filipino phrases can enhance your interactions. Learning words like "po" and "opo" (used to show respect, especially when speaking to elders) can be very helpful. Filipinos appreciate the effort, and it can lead to more engaging conversations and a richer cultural exchange during your stay. Embrace the local customs and enjoy the genuine warmth of the people.

I wasn't able to try the food since I was there only for my half marathon race. It's an old hotel, but it's clean and so spacious. I will go back again next year if the venue will be the same for the running series.

Choice of hotel was made with special consideration to the inclusion of breakfast. However, when breakfast was delivered, the person delivering the meal insisted the meal needed to be paid for and on top of that, the order was totally incorrect. When bringing it to the attention of the front desk staff, although they did agree the meal was included with the room and did not need to be paid for, they did little else to rectify the fact that the breakfast delivered was not the breakfast ordered. Staying at this particular hotel again probably would NOT be my first effort until I exhausted all other options.

Nice place. The staff are fragrant, clean and friendly. The food for breakfast was a bit costly but it was very worth it. Big servings! Very convenient place, just close to tourist spots. You can almost walk! 11/10. Very good!

We have chosen the Hotel as a family because it was in closed proximity to the place we visited. At first glance I was hesitant due to its surroundings, but the staff were very accommodating from the guard, concierge, attendants and waiters they were all very friendly and made sure we were attended too. The free breakfast was a delight and the restaurant served plated breakfast so ensure you order early or be at the restaurant early to give them time to prepare a full great meal for you. Although the hotel looks old the bathrooms were updated and the shower has strong water supply with both hot and cold. The beds were comfortable and the room is clean. The price was a good deal too.

Was not able to stay in the hotel. Informed us in a vey short notice that they won’t able to accommodate us right there and then when we arrived at the place. The receptionist lacked initiative to help us, and to resolve the issue for the inconvenience that they, and agent, have caused us as we were not from around the place, we traveled from afar, and we were very exhausted. He was not an advocate for the customers, he did not know how to compensate. He did not know what to do. Poor customer service! He was even hesitant to let us stay for a little bit in the lobby. We wouldn’t have gotten a referral for another place to stay if he was not told to do so. Will not recommend this to family and friends. 1/5 stars.

This is my second time to stay in this hotel. My first was last 2016 stayed for about 3 nights and the recent? Well, I just finished my check out right this moment. I chose this hotel cause it's cheap compared to other hotels in the area and it is just a few distance from the embassy which is my purpose of stay. The staffs are very welcoming and friendly though the hotel is kind of old but you can still sleep and rest comfortably. They offer 2 complimentary bottled mineral water, free coffee and a welcome drink. They have free wifi, elevator is kind of small but better than nothing and they have newspapers available. I just have few points to mention though, the bathroom is kind of smelly but you may request to the house keeping staff to clean and get rid of the smell though it would be better if they cleaned it well before the guest arrives. Windows are broken though they fixed it like they put a screen on it but i don't thinks it's enough as screen can be broken easily. But over-all it's ok. You get what you paid for.

If you have appointment at US embassy, you can try this hotel. It’s more likely 10 minutes away, food was deliciously served, and very budget-friendly. Downsides: a bit noisy due to it’s beside the highway.

The hotel has a great accommodation. The personnels are very friendly and attend to our needs pleasantly. The location of the hotel is also very accessible to different travel destinations. It is great to be with Rosas Garden Hotel while I was in Manila.
