Your Travel Guide to El Nido as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to El Nido from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Reaching El Nido from Manila and other major Philippine cities is primarily done through air travel. The most convenient gateway is Lio Airport (ENI), which serves El Nido. Several airlines operate flights from Manila (MNL) to ENI, with travel times typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Flight prices can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book, but expect fares to range from PHP 3,000 to PHP 8,000 or more for a round trip. Booking your book flight in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak travel seasons.

For those seeking more budget-friendly options, traveling by land and sea is also possible, though considerably longer. This usually involves flying to Puerto Princesa (PPS), Palawan's capital, which often has cheaper airfares. From Puerto Princesa, you can take a van or bus to El Nido. The van journey takes approximately 5-6 hours and costs around PHP 500-700. Bus fares are slightly lower but take longer. This option is best for travelers with ample time and a desire to see more of Palawan.

Driving to El Nido is a significant undertaking, typically only feasible if you are already in Palawan or nearby islands and have your own vehicle. The roads from Puerto Princesa to El Nido are mostly paved, but the journey is long, covering over 230 kilometers. This route is best suited for adventurous travelers who enjoy road trips and have the flexibility to stop along the way.

Best Time to Visit El Nido

El Nido experiences a tropical climate, with distinct dry and wet seasons. The dry season, generally from November to May, is considered the peak tourist season. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and ideal conditions for island hopping and other water activities. The weather is consistently pleasant, making it the most popular time for both local and international tourists.

The wet season runs from June to October. While this period can bring occasional rainfall, it doesn't necessarily mean continuous downpours. Often, the rain comes in short, intense bursts, usually in the afternoon, leaving the rest of the day clear and sunny. Traveling during the wet season can offer a more laid-back atmosphere and potentially lower accommodation prices, making it a good choice for wallet-conscious travelers.

For Filipino travelers looking for a balance of good weather and fewer crowds, the shoulder months of November and May can be particularly appealing. You can still enjoy excellent conditions for exploring El Nido's natural wonders while potentially finding better deals on flights and accommodation. Regardless of when you visit, El Nido's beauty shines through.

Food and Dining Near El Nido — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

El Nido offers a delightful culinary scene that reflects the Philippines' rich gastronomic heritage, with fresh seafood taking center stage. When you visit, be sure to try Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Freshly caught fish is marinated in vinegar, calamansi juice, onions, ginger, and chili, offering a tangy and refreshing taste that perfectly complements the tropical climate. Many local eateries and restaurants along the main street serve excellent versions of this dish.

Another must-try is La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo but popular throughout the country. While El Nido is known for seafood, this comforting soup, made with pork, shrimp, and various noodles, provides a warm and savory option, especially on cooler evenings or after a long day of activities. Look for local carinderias or small restaurants that offer authentic Filipino comfort food.

Grilled seafood is a staple in El Nido, and for good reason. Freshly caught fish, squid, and prawns are often grilled to perfection over charcoal, served simply with soy sauce, calamansi, and chili. This preparation highlights the natural flavors of the seafood and is a characteristic Filipino dining experience. Many beachfront restaurants offer a selection of freshly caught seafood that you can choose and have cooked to your liking.

Don't leave El Nido without trying Halo-Halo for dessert. This iconic Filipino treat is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's the perfect way to cool down and satisfy your sweet tooth. You'll find various versions of Halo-Halo at local cafes and restaurants, each offering a unique blend of ingredients.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for El Nido

Filipino travelers visiting El Nido will find the local culture warm and welcoming, characterized by the strong sense of community and hospitality common throughout the Philippines. While English and Tagalog are widely understood, learning a few basic Cuyonon phrases, the local dialect, can be appreciated. Always greet locals with a smile and be respectful of their customs and traditions.

Safety in El Nido is generally good, especially in the tourist areas. However, as with any travel destination, it's wise to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure, be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. For emergencies, the local police can be reached at [insert local emergency number if available, otherwise omit].

For a smoother travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is indispensable for navigating the town and surrounding areas. Ride-hailing apps are not as prevalent as in major cities, but local tricycle drivers are readily available. A currency converter app can be helpful for managing your budget, and a translation app might be useful if you encounter situations where communication is challenging.

It's also beneficial to have the Traveloka app installed on your phone. This allows you to easily manage your bookings, access hotel information, and explore local attractions and activities, ensuring you have all the necessary tools for a well-organized and enjoyable trip to El Nido.

The staff were polite if far from welcoming. Our first rooms bathroom had algae and mold growing in the grout between the tiles and there was no working lock on the door. Our second night on arriving back to our ro ww discovered our room infested with large flying ants that had come through a cieling vent. We were given a second slightly cleaner room however the bathroom shower was still disgracefully dirty and the shower head did not work added to which there was no hot water as they "had run out". Even budget hotels require baseline standards. This was one of my worst hotel experiences in Elnido.

Wasn’t thrilled. Although the staff was very kind and helpful our entire stay, the first night they didn’t have our room available so they had to put us in a smaller room and my friend had to sleep on a floor mattress. The bathrooms were dirty. Barely enough space for suitcases. The location is on a busy noisy street with music bumping till late at night. There was a mouse nesting in our room that the staff had to come catch. We rook a private boat tour and thankfully that made up for poor accommodations.

The front desk person wouldn’t check us in because the room was for five people and they wanted to put 3 more people in our room which was not what I originally booked. Also, the power went out in the middle of the night making our room very hot. I would definitely like a refund!

Old, tired rooms. No soundproofing. No blackout curtains. Very basic room despite being called “deluxe”. Reception service was ok until I needed a room clean and then had to challenge the hotel to provide a clean. Would not stay again and would not recommend.

we stayed there for 3 nights ... for Philippines standarts the hotel mis ok..... in the center of the village . Near the beach and all the shops and restaurants. we had a room on the back side so wasn't so noisy. The rooms are very small and in a bad condition. not any chairs or a little table at the balcony. The bathroom very dirty and the last day we had a nice cockroach in the room. The money i think is to much what for what they offer. Internet connection nothing

The room is as basic as you can get. We got a hard bed but we managed. The bathroom smelled like rotten eggs and the entire bathroom was soaked. The shower floor is not level so stagnant smelly water remains there. I gagged everytime I went in there. The AC wouldn’t stay on. Without it you are in a hot box. The last night I hard to turn on the AC every 20 min so I barely slept. Then at 6am the hotel cuts the power. So now I’m sweating in a rotten egg smelling hot box. I went downstairs to the front desk asking if my power can be turned on since the whole hotel had power. A young man followed me up to my room and gingled some things around on the wall only to tell me since I am checking out anyway that there is no point to restart the power in my room. I left immediately and I will never come back to this disappointing hotel.

Hotel is in a good location, but that’s it. Room was in a quite bad condition, especialy a bathroom. Spider webs hanging from a ceiling, taps were rusty and water smelled really bad. No way worth the price.

I understand that in El Nido you can’t expect a luxury hotel. But for the price I paid I would have expected a working sink, shower water that didn’t smell noxious and an AC that didn’t shut off randomly. This place would be fine at a big discount to student backpackers, but anything above $30/night is a rip off.

1st day of our family tour waited 2 hours. Receptionist told us to get prepared by 8:30 and by 9am the tour starts. Started the tour @10am. 2nd tour same. Waited again for another 1and half hour. The hotel doesn’t have any aircon in the lobby. We also have kids with us. 1 yr old 4 yrs old 5 yrs old 6 yrs old. We also lost ipad in that hotel. House keeper says didn’t find anything ‘What a Theif’ dont ever turn that wifi ‘on’ once i found that to my find my iPhone i will sue this hotel.

Had to wait 4 hours to check-in, receptionist seemed to not want to assist in any capacity. Room was good, service was just not great.

They gave us a choice of room with loft which was claustrophobic but the 2 bed option much nicer. AC was good and it was generally comfortable. Bathroom a little old but adequate. Overall I would stay here again but not my wife lol.

Clean, quiet and peaceful…not on the beach but the beach is behind the buildings across the street from this hotel.

The front lobby, no air-conditioning at all. In most times I passed in or out, no person at the counter most of the times. By the way, no security. Mismanaged hotel.
