Can not wait to go back
I have stayed her a couple of times and will be returning not soon enough.. The lodge is very clean and neat and feels like home.. The view from the balconies is to die for.. The owner is nice guy and I enjoy talking with him.. The staff are very nice and accommodating and prepare great meals. When I visit Siargao I like both ends of the island and when I stay on the northern end this is where you will always find me.

Not for everyone
Sailfish is not a hotel, it's a fishing lodge. That being said, here's what to expect if you plan on staying there. It is, what I would describe, a frat house. Sailfish is situated in a local community, next to shanties with a common handpump. The lodge interiors are made of wood and decorated with pictures of nude women. This is not really an issue but I know that some might find it offensive. The rooms are basic--don't expect free toiletries and towels--but clean. There's even a common area with a pool table, a TV, and huge speakers. Every night at Sailfish is frat night. Guests, mostly male Westerners in their 50s, would sit at a wooden table with beer and fish and chips made with mahi mahi that was probably caught by the guest who went out fishing that day (but I learned that whoever caught the day's bounty would still have to pay for his meal). The host, Mark, is the master of the frat house. He makes the rules and if you disagree with him, you'd either have to argue with him or better yet, just shut up. I did witness one of the guests argue with him about a refund. I understand that hotels have their own policies on refunds and reservations. However, that was the first time I've seen a hotel owner raise his voice at a guest. Mark is not a bad person. Maybe he just needs an assistant to take care of customer relations. Before booking this lodge, just make sure to ask specific questions on refunds, cancellations, fishing trips (what if the boat catches on fire or what if one of your companions gets seasick and you're forced to cut the trip short or what the boatmen receive from the catch, etc) Sailfish is not a bad place, either. It's just that it seems to cater to a specific market--the hardcore gamefishing Westerner. So if you're a backpacker or a solo traveler who wants to do things on your own and prefers beachbumming over fishing, then skip this place and look for a place in GL.

Easy going, no hassle
I initially booked for 3 nights, but stayed on for an extra 4. I'm not a fisherman or a surfer, but it was just the ideal place to hang out and from which to explore this beautiful island. Just a stone's throw to the beach, bike and surf board hire, and all the local bars and restaurants. Mark was always on hand, answering any questions (just ask!) and providing valuable, experienced advice. Highly recommended, and will definitely return (owner permitting!)

Mid June stay with Fishing
My girlfriend and I stayed with Mark at the Lodge in mid June for four days with two days on the boat fishing. Room we were allocated was clean and spacious with a terrace giving a good view of the Pacific Ocean ! The Lodge is in an excellent location right by the beach - perfect for a stroll in the evening or just to sit and watch the Ocean. The food prepared by Mark's staff, Sheila and Mia was amazing, portions are huge and really delicious ! Fish and Chips was not like any I've had before - not sure if it was Marlin or Mia Mia but it was delicious and a huge plate of food - you will NOT go hungry ! Mark the owner is a very like-able and down to earth character who is very easy to get on with and a fund of entertaining stories ! I had two days on the boat fishing with Mark, unfortunately we didn't catch this time but not for want of trying ! His two boat men certainly tried but hey that's fishing ! We saw flying fish, Tuna and lots of Dolphins so an enjoyable time was had in spite of not catching - ' There's more to fishing than catching fish ' as they say anyway ! Food and drinks were provided and the cost of the charter for the two days was very reasonable ! Would certainly go back to Siargao again and hopefully have a longer stay next time and explore more this beautiful island ! Thanks again Mark, Martin & Marilyn
