Your Travel Guide to Dauin as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Dauin from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Dauin from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air, flying into Dumaguete Airport (DGT). Direct flights from Manila to Dumaguete are available and typically take around 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly, but booking in advance through platforms like Traveloka can help you find competitive prices, often ranging from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and airline.

From Dumaguete Airport, Sea Dream Resorts is about a 30-45 minute drive. You can hire a taxi at the airport or arrange for a private transfer. For budget-conscious travelers, taking a tricycle or jeepney from the airport to the Dumaguete City Integrated Bus Terminal and then catching a bus or van heading south towards Bayawan or Siaton, asking to be dropped off in Dauin (Masaplod Sur), is a more economical option. Bus fares are considerably lower, usually under PHP 100.

While less common for reaching Dauin directly, if you are traveling overland from other parts of Negros Oriental, you can utilize the provincial bus routes. These buses frequently pass through Dauin. For those coming from Luzon and preferring a land and sea journey, you could take a bus to a ferry terminal like Batangas, then a ferry to Visayas, and continue by land. However, for efficiency, it is highly recommended to book flight tickets to Dumaguete.

Best Time to Visit Dauin

The best time to visit Dauin and the surrounding Dumaguete region is generally during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, lower humidity, and calmer seas, making it ideal for outdoor activities, beach enjoyment, and water sports like diving and snorkeling, for which Dauin is renowned. The period between December and February is particularly pleasant with cooler temperatures.

The wet season, from June to October, can bring intermittent rainfall, which might affect outdoor plans. However, this period often sees fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices, offering a different kind of appeal for travelers seeking a quieter visit. Even during the rainy season, showers are often brief, and the lush green landscapes are quite beautiful. For diving enthusiasts, visibility can still be excellent during these months.

Food and Dining Near Dauin — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Dauin and the Dumaguete area, Filipino travelers should definitely explore the local culinary scene. A must-try is fresh seafood, given the coastal location. Look for grilled fish (inihaw na isda), kinilaw (Filipino ceviche), and various shellfish prepared in local styles. Many small eateries and restaurants along the coast offer these delights.

take advantage of this on trying Sans Rival, a famous local delicacy from Dumaguete. This rich, layered cake made with buttercream, meringue, and cashews is a sweet treat that perfectly complements a cup of local coffee. You can find this at popular bakeshops in Dumaguete City, a short drive from Dauin.

Another local favorite is Silliman University's famous "Budbod Kabog," a sticky rice delicacy flavored with pandan and served with a sweet sauce. While more commonly found in Dumaguete, it's a unique taste of the region. Also, explore local carinderias for authentic Filipino comfort food like adobo, sinigang, and various vegetable dishes, offering a true taste of home.

For a more adventurous palate, try the local "Balut" if you're feeling brave, though it's more of a street food staple found in many parts of the Philippines. Exploring the Malatapay Market, mentioned earlier, is also a fantastic way to sample a wide array of local produce and freshly prepared dishes.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Dauin

The culture in Dauin and Dumaguete is generally warm and welcoming. Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and politeness is highly valued. A simple "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect local customs, especially when visiting religious sites like Dauin Church. Dress modestly when visiting churches or interacting with elders.

Safety in Dauin is generally good, with low crime rates. However, as with any travel, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. It's advisable to have the local emergency numbers handy, though for most situations, contacting your hotel or local authorities via a general emergency hotline would suffice.

For communication and navigation, ensure you have a reliable mobile signal. Consider getting a local SIM card if you are staying for an extended period. Essential apps include Google Maps for navigation, a translation app if you're not fluent in Cebuano or Tagalog, and of course, the Traveloka app for managing your bookings and discovering local attractions. A weather app is also useful for planning your daily activities.

When interacting with locals, be respectful of their traditions and way of life. Engaging in conversations and showing genuine interest in their culture can lead to richer travel experiences. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people.

Everything was good but it would be better if the hotel can just give complimentary coffee for guests to have when they wake up in the morning. Sachets of coffee and cream are not that expensive. I understand if breakfast is not included because of the high cost of foods. Anyway, everything’s great in general. Service is amazing! Thanks to every staff who made our stay a memorable one!! The people who assist us with our snorkelling which we didn’t plan were amazing too. They made our stay an enjoyable one! Thank you all!

The room I stayed in was nice. Which that what ya pay for. The room had a water heater, but no coffee, nor coffee cups. Just had beer and pop that was a cost. Both mornings I was there went to breakfast, the lady that was taking the order was very dismantle. Her attitude toward us was like you didnt feel welcome there. Couldn't wait get through eating and get out of there. And their kichten was supposed open up at 6am,which didn't happen. Had walk down to ask when they was going to open. Really not much to due at this place but swim in a pool. Really isnt worth the price!

I like the views and peacefulness of the property. Room was spacious. However, would not stay here again. There are a lot of rules including no outside food so be aware that if you don’t want to eat at their restaurant you will need to leave the resort (resort food was not good nor authentic.) Main reason i booked this place was their fitness center/gym but it was being renovated at time of stay. I wish this had been disclosed to me at booking or at least prior to arrival.

Immediate area around the hotel is good, beach is formed of rocks so sea swimming off the beach is a no go. If checking in early evening be prepared for a rushed check-in and then the place to close down. We decided to gave a massage before we left, not a bad price and a good massage, only problem is no massage table only beds, not bad for us but for the therapist I'm not so sure. Overall I think they are overpriced for what's on offer.

Tranquil etting with nice pool side restaurant. Chef is excellent, food consistently delicious. Spacious rooms (overlooking grounds and pool(. Pool water filters must be turned on more often. Water is hazy and not crystal clear compared with similar upscale resorts in the area. Overall good experience. May return again.

The place is good, however the service is not like when we enter the room towel is not available and we need to ask the staff that we do not have towel in the room ready to use, also their was an electric kettle but no cup for coffee, no telephone/intercom in the room or in the area to call in front desk for any assistance, we need to go down and to ask for the assistance, the internet provided is not friendly and was not able to use for the entire stay, and when I check out even if it only me who check out it took some time to clear and I have to wait longer time than I usually experience with other hotels, and lastly the stairs going to second floor is made of metal and it bounce upon going up and down very cheap! So overall it is not worth of what I have paid of.

Took 16 family members to resort and apo inland resprt was nice and food was good but a little expensive compared to Philippines, was a drive to other restaurants in dumagette, there was no beach as you would expect to see in the Philippines, seen bette beaches in Florida, over all would not stay there again just because of the beach, but family freindly.

The stay was amazing. The owner was kind to upgrade me to a sea facing room. Room was very comfortable...the pool overlooking the sea was very well maintained. The lndscape and gardens were excellent...a nice little bar by the sea and excellent food in their restaurant. A great experience overall

I have mixed feelings about this place. I stayed for 5 nights in the more expensive Ocean view room. The room and amenities we're very nice. Great view, good wifi, AC, and satellite TV. No complaints. However, I was disappointed that they have no on site scuba diving center as advertised. They offered me a Scuba Diver excursion for 3 times the normal price since there were no other divers. Therefore, I did all my Scuba Diving at an off site dive center about 5km away. To do this, I had to rent a scooter at an inflated price and they even charged me extra for the helmet. The prices in the restaurant were also relatively expensive and breakfast is not included. It felt odd that the hotel manager (owner?) had his desk set up in the middle of the dining room and never greeted or said a word to me during my entire stay. While the staff were always very nice and professional. The guests seemed to be predominantly Chinese.

This place is amazing! Fantastic, I can't say enough positive things about our experience at this resort. Friendly well mannered staff always ready to serve their guests. Accommodations are great, clean and well cared for. Way above average, top shelf all the way from start to finish. Restaurant was a bit pricey, but the food was very good. All in all this was a wonderful place I would definitely return again!
