Wonderful place and people. The cantina is nice. My only complaints are that the towels were super soft almost like microfiber and wouldn't absorb anything at all. So bring your own towels. One other thing, the road approaching is horrendous, simply awful. Oh and the dogs ... They are so nice, love those dogs!!

Your Travel Guide to Calatrava as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Calatrava from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from Manila, the most efficient way to reach Calatrava is by air. You can book a flight to Bacolod-Silay International Airport (BCD) in Negros Occidental. Several airlines operate daily flights from Manila to Bacolod, with travel times typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary, but booking in advance can secure cheaper hotel options and flights, often ranging from PHP 2,500 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and airline.

From Bacolod-Silay International Airport, you have several options to get to Calatrava. The most common method is to take a taxi or a ride-sharing service to the Bacolod North Bus Terminal. From there, you can catch a bus or a van heading north towards San Carlos City or directly to Calatrava. The bus journey takes approximately 2 to 3 hours, with fares typically ranging from PHP 150 to PHP 250. This route offers a scenic view of Negros Occidental's countryside.

Alternatively, if you prefer a more direct route and are comfortable with longer travel times, you can take a bus directly from Manila to Calatrava. This is a much longer journey, often involving ferry crossings, and can take over 24 hours. While it is a more economical option for those on a tight budget, it is significantly less convenient than flying. For most travelers, booking a flight is the recommended approach to save time and energy.

Best Time to Visit Calatrava

The Philippines generally experiences a tropical climate, and Calatrava in Negros Occidental is no exception. The best time to visit Calatrava is typically during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor activities, exploring the town, and enjoying the coastal areas.

The months of December to February are particularly pleasant, with cooler temperatures and minimal rainfall. This period is considered peak season, so you might find more tourists and slightly higher prices for accommodations and flights. If you prefer fewer crowds and potentially lower costs, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or March to May. The wet season, from June to October, can bring heavy rains and occasional typhoons, which might disrupt travel plans and outdoor activities.

Food and Dining Near Calatrava — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Negros Occidental is renowned for its culinary heritage, and Calatrava offers a taste of this rich gastronomic landscape. A must-try dish is the Chicken Inasal, a local specialty of grilled chicken marinated in a mixture of calamansi, pepper, vinegar, and annatto oil, giving it a distinct smoky flavor and vibrant color. You can find delicious versions of this dish in local eateries and restaurants throughout the region.

Another culinary delight from Negros Occidental is the Piaya, a flat, unleavened bread filled with muscovado sugar. It's often enjoyed as a snack or dessert and is a popular pasalubong (souvenir). Look for freshly baked piaya in local bakeries for the best taste. The sweetness of the muscovado sugar combined with the soft bread makes it a delightful treat.

For seafood lovers, fresh catches are abundant in coastal areas like Calatrava. Enjoy grilled fish, prawns, or squid, often simply prepared to highlight their natural flavors. Many local carinderias and restaurants serve these dishes with rice and local condiments. Don't forget to try the local fruits, such as mangoes and lanzones, when they are in season, for a refreshing taste of the tropics.

Finally, for those with a sweet tooth, try the Silvanas from Dumaguete, which are also popular in Negros Occidental. These are cashew-based meringue cookies filled with buttercream and coated in cookie crumbs. While not exclusive to Calatrava, they are a widely loved delicacy that represents the sweet side of Visayan cuisine.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Calatrava

The people of Negros Occidental are known for their hospitality and friendly demeanor. When interacting with locals in Calatrava, a simple "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) in the local dialect can go a long way. Respect local customs and traditions, especially when visiting churches or attending local events. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites.

Safety in Calatrava is generally good, as it is a relatively peaceful municipality. However, as with any travel, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or when traveling at night. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. It's advisable to inform someone of your travel plans and expected return times, particularly if you are venturing into more remote areas.

There are two big doberman dogs on the property but the owners were very accommodating of the fact I was bitten by a hostel dog in Dumaguete a few days ago so they upgraded me to a different room so they wouldn't be near me. Staff exceeded expectations and the room was very clean and comfortable. WiFi was functioning which is pretty rare in the provinces and there is food available which is useful as there isn't much available in Calatrava. The dogs bark during the night which isn't ideal but I would still recommend this place.

The staff is the friendliest and most helpful 2 people I have ever met. From the moment we arrived they were right there to answer any questions or take care of any concerns. Also she is a wonderful cook. My only recommendation would be to revise the menu as a lot of items are not available. I would suggest guests bring the staples as far as food and cook in your room, we did. The facilities and beach were very nice. I would certainly recommend to my friends.

The owners,Maria and Doug were waiting at the ferry terminal as arranged. They were smiley, chatty and warmly welcomed us. This is a family resort and the home cooked foods are delicious, plentiful and very cheap. The kindness and service are second to none. The staff made us feel very special. This was our first vacation and all we wanted was sun, sea and sand,,,,,the loving kindness , smiles and service were a dream come true .We swam and kayaked in the clear blue seas, ate and drank on the floating raft. The bar is well stocked with ice cold beers, wines and spirits.A massive TV screen with unlimited cable, movies, heaps of music and karaoke. Our room was clean, air conditioned with a comfortable bed and en suite, towels, toiletries, wifi and cable tv. On leaving Doug and Maria took us to town to meet my girlfriends family and waited until her mom finished shopping. They then took us to the ferry where we said our sad goodbyes. These guys gave us treasured memories and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. We are returning soon for a family party. Edrock PS,,,squid, crabs, fish sinigang sweet and sour, pork adobo & chicken,,,,yum, yum :) loved it!!!

Very nice resort. They pickup us up and dropped us off in San Carlos for free. When we were there the water was calm and crystal clear. The beach is very nice and they have kayaks, tubes and snorkeling equipment you can use. There are pretty lights everywhere at night. It is very romantic for couples and they made campfire for us on the beach. But no marshmallows. :-) The food is excellent. We tried the sinigang, and the baby back ribs.

Stayed here again, The best food around. Try the Burger you will not be disappointed 5/5. Beach amazing well manicured all sand 5/5. Rooms VERY clean VERY comfortable. 5/5. ICE COLD Beer and full bar 5/5. The staff here is amazing 5/5. Price 5/5 You would expect to pay a lot more for a place with all of the amenities. ICE COLD Beer. The owner and his wife are truly amazing people and cater to every need. Pick up and drop off at the port or terminal. I will be back here again and again, I cant say enough about this place. You will not find a place better anywhere in the Philippines. Beach volleyball, Jet ski and Banana Boat rides, Kayak, floating cottage, pump boat, Billiards, Table tennis, Darts, and the list goes on. Did I mention ICE COLD Beer.

This is my second visit to SmallFry’s and I really enjoyed my stay again. The last time I was here I tried some of their delicious local Filipino dishes and their amazing homemade BBQ hamburgers. This time I tried the grilled fish. I even got to help choose it from the fisherman’s wives who come by the resort almost every morning with fresh catch. The staff and even the two cute puppies and are very friendly and helpful. The owners picked us up and dropped us off in San Carlos like last time. The beach is clean, well maintained and perfect for beach volleyball at low tide and water volleyball at high tide. I plan to come back again next year and will bring more of my volleyball friends.

Small Fry was a wonderful place to stay and they were absolutely amazing to my family and I. We stayed there multiple nights. Sometimes with our two young children and one time alone as a couple. It is a perfect place for a family, large group, or a couple that just wants to get away. The food was amazing and there is a lot of things to do including karaoke, swimming in the ocean, playing darts, or playing pool. There is also a full bar available. The staff is so friendly and they are able to pick you up at the ferry dock in San Carlos and help you with transportation. If you need a place to stay in the area (whether as a large group, family, couple, or solo) this is the correct choice. They were absolutely wonderful and helped create many memories for my family. For that I will always be extremely grateful.

The living space was spacious with plenty of outlets and beds, the upstairs kitchen area allowed our family to cook, dine, and watch movies, the on-site restaurant was great along with billiards, ping pong and aquatic equipment was very helpful. I and my entire family recommend this resort and it's staff.
