Your Travel Guide to Calamba as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Calamba from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Calamba from Metro Manila is quite convenient. The most direct route is via the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX). From SLEX, take the Turbina exit and follow signs leading to Calamba proper. The journey typically takes about 1 to 1.5 hours by private car, depending on traffic. If you're planning to fly into the Philippines, you'll arrive at NAIA, and from there, you can hire a taxi or use a ride-sharing service to reach Calamba. Consider booking your flight early for better rates.

For those opting for public transportation, numerous bus companies operate routes from major terminals in Metro Manila (like Cubao or Pasay) to Calamba. Buses heading to Batangas or Lucena usually pass through Calamba. The fare typically ranges from PHP 150 to PHP 250, and the travel time is around 2 to 3 hours. Once you arrive at the Calamba Central Terminal, you can easily find local jeepneys or tricycles to take you to your specific destination within the city.

If you are coming from other major cities in Luzon, you can also utilize bus services that connect to Calamba. For travelers coming from the Visayas or Mindanao, flying into NAIA is the most practical option, followed by a land transfer to Calamba. Planning your trip and booking your transport in advance can help ensure a smoother travel experience, especially during peak seasons.

Best Time to Visit Calamba

Calamba, like much of the Philippines, experiences a tropical climate with two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season, typically from November to April, offers generally sunny days and lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. Temperatures during these months can range from 24°C to 32°C, providing pleasant weather for swimming and sightseeing.

The wet season, from May to October, is characterized by higher rainfall, occasional typhoons, and increased humidity. While this period might see fewer tourists, it can also offer a more serene experience and potentially lower accommodation rates. If you plan to visit during the wet season, it's wise to pack an umbrella and rain gear, and to check weather forecasts regularly. Regardless of the season, Calamba's natural springs offer a year-round appeal.

Food and Dining Near Calamba — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Calamba, indulging in local culinary delights is a must. One iconic dish you should seek out is Bicol Express, a rich and spicy stew made with pork, coconut milk, chilies, and shrimp paste. Its fiery kick and creamy texture are a true representation of Filipino flavors, often found in local eateries and carinderias around Laguna.

Another local favorite is Laing, a dish made from taro leaves cooked in coconut milk with dried fish or pork. It’s a comforting and flavorful dish that showcases the versatility of local ingredients. The subtle, earthy taste of laing is a delightful contrast to spicier dishes and is a staple in many Filipino households.

Don't leave Calamba without trying Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers, creating a tangy and refreshing appetizer. It’s a perfect dish to enjoy on a warm day, highlighting the freshness of seafood available in the region.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is an absolute must-try. This popular Filipino dessert is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s a colorful and refreshing treat that perfectly caps off any meal, especially in the tropical climate.

I stayed in this resort two years ago. My recent stay was not as good as the first one. The facility really lacks maintenance. The bathtub has gone brittle that it cracked when I was doing my shower. As I looked out of my room window, I saw this disgusting makeshift roof patch on the resort’s driveway. The elevator gets stuck. The plants around the facility have many dead branches and leaves, obviously needs maintenance. Breakfast and coffee is not hot. Construction going on in the parking area, where there are a lot of trash. On the positive side, the staff are still courteous and hot spring pools are still recommendable. So, I would suggest to pay for a day use of the pools and skip staying in its hotel.

My wife and I stayed at Sol y Viento for the first time in February 2014. We went because of the hot spring water. This is a large hotel with many pools of various sizes, temperatures. There is an extensive pool area for children on part of the property. We found the pools very clean and enjoyable. We had two small complaint. First, we found the food and service at the restaurant rather poor. We were surprised at that because the restaurant is advertised as being a branch of the well-know Manila chain Barrio Fiesta, which is known for good, not-to-expensive Filipino food. This branch is below par, though. I suggest Barrio Fiesta management look into it. The breakfast food and service were a lot better than dinner. The second problem was that our room was a 'loft', meaning the bed is upstairs from a tiny entryway and bathroom. We knew the room would be a loft, but we didn't anticipate how steep and slippery the stairs would be. It's not good for people who might have to use the bathroom during the night. We will probably use Sol y Viento again but next time we'll rent a different type of room and bring our own food for dinner (there's a 'corkage' charge, though...).

Soy Y Viento is an excellent place for hot springs. Majority of the water comes from Mount Makiling; it means that the water is very relaxing and cures most your body pai. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The food are excellent and very fresh. I do not mind coming back next year; for me to enjoy the hot springs from the pool. Thank you, Soy Y Viento and it is well appreciated.

Good resort but charges for everything including the towels, shampoo, and key cards. Uses old reusable key card sleeves. The hotel is good but the service is so cheap.

The employees were exceptional and very helpful. The overall condition if the hotel is mediocre. They play music too loud during meals and the music was inappropriate for dining. The music played on the weekends was much too loud If you need water or toilet paper they charge you for them. Much more expensive then should be. M

The staff were very helpful. The property is nice, however it lacked maintenance. Attention to cleanliness should be done even if the rooms/cabanas show aging already .
