Your Travel Guide to Quezon City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Quezon City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For the most convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila is the most common method. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia offer numerous flights daily to Manila from various provincial capitals. Fares can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 8,000 or more, depending on the origin city, airline, and booking time. From NAIA, you can take a taxi or a ride-sharing service directly to Quezon City, a journey that typically takes 45 minutes to over an hour, depending on traffic. You can book flight tickets conveniently through Traveloka.

If you are traveling from nearby provinces like Pampanga, Bulacan, or Laguna, taking a bus is a more economical option. Several bus terminals in Metro Manila, such as those in Cubao and Pasay, serve routes to Quezon City. Bus fares generally range from PHP 200 to PHP 600, with travel times varying from 1.5 to 4 hours. This mode of transport is ideal for those who prefer a more grounded journey and wish to see more of the countryside.

For those driving their own vehicles, major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect to Metro Manila. From NLEX, you can take exits leading towards EDSA or other arterial roads that will take you into Quezon City. Toll fees can add up, typically ranging from PHP 200 to PHP 500 depending on your starting point and route. Navigating Quezon City itself involves understanding its grid system and major avenues like EDSA and Katipunan Avenue.

Best Time to Visit Quezon City

The Philippines experiences a tropical climate, and Quezon City is no exception. The dry season, from November to April, generally offers the most pleasant weather for exploring. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making outdoor activities more enjoyable. Temperatures typically range from 24°C to 33°C. This period, especially from December to February, is considered peak tourist season due to the cooler temperatures and holiday festivities.

The wet season runs from May to October, characterized by frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours. While this might deter some outdoor activities, it also means fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices. If you plan to visit during this time, it’s wise to pack an umbrella and waterproof gear. Despite the rain, many indoor attractions and dining experiences remain accessible, and you can still book attraction tickets for your planned excursions.

For a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or February. These periods often provide favorable weather conditions without the peak season influx. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Quezon City offers a dynamic urban experience year-round, with plenty to see and do for every type of traveler.

Food and Dining Near Quezon City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Filipino cuisine is a delightful fusion of indigenous flavors and influences from various cultures. A staple you must try is Adobo, a savory dish typically made with chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. Its tangy and salty profile is a beloved classic. Another must-try is Sinigang, a sour soup, often made with tamarind broth and a choice of meat like pork or shrimp, along with various vegetables. Its comforting sourness is perfect for any weather.

For those who enjoy grilled dishes, Lechon (roasted pig) is a celebratory centerpiece, known for its crispy skin and tender meat. While a whole lechon might be a feast for many, smaller portions are often available in restaurants. Kare-Kare, a rich stew made with oxtail, tripe, and vegetables in a thick peanut sauce, served with bagoong (shrimp paste), offers a unique and complex flavor profile that is distinctly Filipino.

When in Quezon City, exploring local eateries and carinderias (small, informal eateries) can lead you to authentic culinary discoveries. Look for restaurants that specialize in regional dishes or offer a wide array of Filipino favorites. For a more contemporary dining experience, many establishments in areas like Tomas Morato and Timog Avenue offer modern takes on traditional Filipino food. Don't forget to try Halo-Halo for dessert, a refreshing mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, and ice cream.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Quezon City

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and warmth. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor and a smile go a long way. It’s customary to use "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority as a sign of respect. While generally safe, like any urban area, it’s wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly.

For emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. It’s also helpful to have the contact numbers of your hotel and local police precinct readily available. When using public transportation or taxis, ensure they are legitimate and reputable. Ride-sharing apps are a popular and often safer alternative for getting around the city. Familiarizing yourself with common Filipino phrases can also enhance your interactions and show respect for the local culture.

To navigate Quezon City and the wider Metro Manila area effectively, several apps can be very useful. Ride-sharing apps like Grab are essential for transportation. Navigation apps such as Google Maps are indispensable for finding your way around. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Viber are widely used. Having these apps installed on your smartphone will greatly assist you in getting around, staying connected, and making the most of your visit.

We spend 4 weeks there as we travel a lot. We had Excellent and very polite staff. The hotel was far from attractions and malls. We had to spend a lot on taxis and transportation which was almost double the prices as they did not want to drive there and some did not want to use the meter. The rooms smelled bad, sometimes the air conditioner blew a bad smell like poop, sewage, or toilet even after trying to fix it and after changing the room. I was charged 150 pesos almost ($3) for a cup when it fell and broke the handle. I found similar mugs in the mall for 35 Pasos. I would not stay there again.

Pleasing room ambience, clean and comfortable, balcony is a bonus. Needs improvement - add more basic amenities like toothbrushes, hairdryer, etc. / Have a proper website and contact number (we had a hard time contacting the hotel); front desk was often unmanned, hardly any staff on hand to assist.

I liked the place. Jay who cleaned our room and made sure that we were supplied with our needs, Raul, Lea, Joey, Edward and front desk receptionists were very helpful and courteous. The security were very professional and well groomed.
