Your Travel Guide to Tagaytay City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Tagaytay City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from Manila and other major Philippine cities, reaching Tagaytay City is quite straightforward. The most common method is by bus. Major bus terminals in Metro Manila, such as those in Cubao and Pasay, offer frequent trips to Tagaytay. The journey typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, with fares ranging from PHP 150 to PHP 250, depending on the bus company and type of service.

If you prefer to drive, Tagaytay is accessible via the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and then the Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR Tollway) or directly through Aguinaldo Highway. The travel time from Metro Manila is around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. Toll fees can range from PHP 200 to PHP 400 for a round trip, depending on your starting point and route.

For those flying into the Philippines, you would typically land at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila. From NAIA, you can take a taxi or a ride-sharing service to one of the bus terminals mentioned above to catch a bus to Tagaytay. Alternatively, you can arrange for a private car service directly from the airport to your hotel in Tagaytay. Remember to book flight tickets in advance for the best fares.

Best Time to Visit Tagaytay City

Tagaytay City enjoys a cooler climate year-round compared to the generally warmer temperatures in Metro Manila, making it a popular destination any time of the year. However, the dry season, from November to April, is generally considered the best time to visit. During these months, you can expect sunny days with pleasant temperatures, ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing.

The months of December to February are particularly popular due to the cooler weather, often dropping to the mid-teens Celsius at night. This period is peak season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices. The rainy season runs from May to October, and while you might encounter occasional downpours, these showers are often brief and can bring a refreshing coolness to the air. Visiting during the shoulder months of the rainy season, like May or October, can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer tourists.

Food and Dining Near Tagaytay City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Tagaytay is renowned for its culinary scene, offering a delightful array of dishes that showcase Filipino flavors and local produce. One absolute must-try is Bulalo, a hearty soup made from beef shanks and bone marrow, slow-cooked until tender. The rich, savory broth is incredibly comforting, especially in Tagaytay’s cooler climate. Many restaurants along the highway offer excellent versions of this classic dish.

Another local specialty is Tawilis, a type of freshwater sardine unique to Taal Lake. It's often served fried until crispy or grilled, offering a delightful texture and a distinct, slightly briny flavor. Enjoying fresh Tawilis with a side of soy sauce and calamansi is a characteristic Tagaytay dining experience. Look for restaurants that source their fish fresh from the lake.

For those with a sweet tooth, Tagaytay offers delicious local delicacies. Buko Pie, a baked young coconut pie with a creamy, sweet filling and a flaky crust, is a popular pasalubong (take-home gift) and a delightful treat. You can find excellent Buko Pie in various bakeries and roadside stalls throughout the city.

Don't leave Tagaytay without trying their famous Strawberry Taho. While Taho is a common Filipino snack, Tagaytay's version often incorporates fresh, local strawberries, adding a fruity twist to the silken tofu, sago pearls, and arnibal (brown sugar syrup). It’s a refreshing and unique dessert or snack that perfectly captures the local flavors.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Tagaytay City

Tagaytay City is known for its generally relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Filipinos are typically hospitable, and a simple "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or showing respect goes a long way. When visiting religious sites like churches or convents, dressing modestly is appreciated. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people.

Safety in Tagaytay is generally good, especially in tourist areas. However, like any popular destination, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. In case of emergencies, local police can be reached at 911. It’s also helpful to have the hotel’s contact number readily available.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for finding your way around. Ride-hailing apps can be useful for getting around if you don't have your own vehicle, though public transport is also quite accessible. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Viber are widely used by Filipinos.

Familiarizing yourself with basic Tagalog phrases can also enhance your experience. Simple greetings like "Magandang umaga" (Good morning) or "Salamat" (Thank you) are always appreciated by locals. Having these tools and a bit of local knowledge will help you navigate Tagaytay City with confidence and ease.

Their staffs were all courteous and friendly. However the room and the buildings were a bit outdated and walls needs repainting. The bedsheets seems like it was already used and had not been changed. I'm not sure if I am going to stay again next time. Still thanks for accommodating us.

Front desk staff gave us only 2 meal stubs for our complimentary breakfast whereas the reservation was for 4 pax, so I asked why only 2 meals stubs were provide and she said "that's our hotel policy that though the room was for 4 guests, free breakfast is only for 2." But my husband, complained with the hotel manager and explained that it wasn't indicated on the voucher sent to us, eventually, the manager, agreed that we should be given additional 2 free complimentary breakfast. Also, swimming pool was closed until 6pm due to their cleaning activity, knowing that we're in Tagaytay, who in the world will swim at a freezing cold pool at night? We suggested to the hotel manager that they should've done the cleaning at night where guests will not be using it.

It is my first time to book in app and also first time in Tagaytay Country Hotel. The location is good but their services is unsatisfying as well as its facilities. When I ordered breakfast, they gave me burnt pancakes. When I returned it, they just flipped it and gave it to me again. I returned the pancake and asked them to prepare a new one. On the 2nd day, they gave me a burnt tocino for breakfast. :( Also, the bed sheets are dirty. The restroom smells bad even the first time we entered it. I regret staying in this hotel. Hope you can improve your facilities.

Room for quad sharing is big! it has microwave and electric kettle. Bathroom has hot and cold shower with adequate water pressure. Pool is nice, not too cold even in tagaytay weather. The garden is nice also. Breakfast is also good. Service is warm. Will be back for sure!

Since it’s very hot in Metro Manila as of this season, we decided to stay for one night in a good budget hotel in Tagaytay City. Location: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - It’s located near Fora Filinvest Mall, McDonald’s, Mang Inasal, Seven Eleven, Andok’s, and more. It also has a nearby BDO that you can access on foot which is convenient. The hotel, however, does not have a covered parking space but nonetheless, the slotted parking space in front of the lobby seems safe and can accommodate up to 10 vehicles. Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - All the staffs were very polite. The front desk staffs, the bellhops, the security were very courteous. They will greet you whenever you pass by. Room: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - The room has a style of a clean and simple bedroom from home. Good thing that the temperature in the room was cool. It has a vanity mirror, closet, empty refrigerator where you can buy and store your own food and drinks, flat screen tv with DVD player and a side table with 2 chairs for your quick snacks. The in-room bathroom was clean and spacious. It has only one extra setting for the water temperature. Either you want it normal or warm. I could say it’s pretty functional and satisfactory as well. The wifi in the room was good too. The room is locked by a traditional key and a door latch for added security. We had no problem at all. Restaurant: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - “Country Cafe” is where we had our breakfast. They serve plated breakfast where in you can choose from American Breakfast (bacon/ham/chicken sausage, sunny side up, toasted bread, butter), Filipino Breakfast (bangus/longganisa/tocino, sunny side up, garlic rice) and Continental Breakfast (pancakes). The cafe was spacious and can accommodate up to 50 guests. It has a flat screen tv as well and a simple ambiance. You can partner your breakfast with either a cup of coffee or tea however, you can’t have it refilled which is understandable. All in all, for the price we paid, I can say we got our money’s worth and were pleased with the staffs courteousness.

The hotel is nicely situated near Fora mall and some restaurants. I think the room and hotel itself needs renovation. The food is okay. Plus points for their courteous guards and staffs!
