This is a resort with a big heart. We loved the beautiful and quiet grounds, the friendly staff, the comfortable rooms with great views, and the extensive food and drinks menu that never failed to please. Oh, and it has a great pool and WiFi too. On the Wednesday morning of our stay we walked three minutes along the beach to the colourful Malatapay market.

We have stayed here multiple times. It's quiet, relaxing, and well run. They have room service, and lots of activity options (like snorkeling at apo island which is great). Most of all, their service is consistent (good), so you can count on a relaxing getaway with good food and a nice room.

Your Travel Guide to Zamboanguita as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Zamboanguita from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most efficient way to reach Zamboanguita from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air, flying into Dumaguete Airport (DGT). Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific operate flights from Manila to Dumaguete. Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 20 minutes. Fares can vary significantly, but booking in advance through platforms like Traveloka can help you find cheaper flights, with prices sometimes starting from PHP 2,500 to PHP 4,000 for a one-way ticket during promotional periods.

From Dumaguete Airport, you can take a taxi or a pre-arranged van service to Thalatta Resort in Zamboanguita. The drive is about 40-50 kilometers and takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. If you prefer a more budget-friendly option, you can take a tricycle from the airport to the Dumaguete City bus terminal and then catch a public bus or van heading south towards Zamboanguita. These buses usually depart frequently and cost around PHP 50-100.

For travelers coming from other parts of Negros Oriental or nearby islands like Cebu, ferry services to Dumaguete are also available. Once in Dumaguete, the land travel to Zamboanguita remains the same. If you are driving your own vehicle, you can plan your route using GPS navigation. The roads leading to Zamboanguita are generally well-maintained, though some provincial roads can be narrower. Ensure your vehicle is in good condition for the journey.

Best Time to Visit Zamboanguita

The Philippines generally experiences two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. For Zamboanguita and the Negros Oriental region, the dry season typically runs from November to May, offering sunny days and lower chances of rain. This period is ideal for outdoor activities, beach visits, and exploring the natural attractions like Apo Island. The weather is usually pleasant, with temperatures ranging from the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius.

The wet season, from June to October, can bring intermittent to heavy rainfall, often accompanied by typhoons. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices, outdoor activities can be disrupted. For travelers who prefer consistent good weather for their vacation, the months of December to April are often considered the peak season. However, visiting during the shoulder months, like November or May, can offer a good balance of favorable weather and fewer crowds.

Food and Dining Near Zamboanguita — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Negros Oriental, and Zamboanguita by extension, offers a delightful culinary landscape for Filipino travelers. A must-try is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, usually tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing appetizer that perfectly captures the coastal flavors of the region. You can often find excellent Kinilaw at local eateries or even at the Malatapay Market.

Another local specialty to look out for is SUTUKIL, a cooking method popular in the Visayas region, which stands for Sugba (grill), Tula (stew/soup), and Kilaw (raw/ceviche). Many restaurants in Dumaguete and surrounding areas offer SUTUKIL platters, allowing you to enjoy fresh seafood prepared in three different delicious ways. This is a fantastic way to sample the local catch and experience the diverse culinary traditions.

Don't leave Negros Oriental without trying Piaya, a flat, unleavened bread filled with muscovado sugar and sometimes purple yam (ube). While more famously associated with Bacolod, it's widely available in Negros Oriental and makes for a delicious snack or breakfast item. Pair it with a hot cup of local coffee for an authentic Filipino breakfast experience. You can find these treats in local bakeries and pasalubong centers.

For a hearty meal, try the local version of Adobo, which can vary slightly from region to region. In Negros, it might incorporate local spices or a touch of sweetness from muscovado sugar. Also, explore the availability of fresh seafood dishes, as Zamboanguita’s proximity to the coast means you can enjoy grilled fish, prawns, and squid prepared simply to highlight their natural flavors.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Zamboanguita

Filipino culture in Zamboanguita, like much of the Visayas, is characterized by warmth, hospitality, and a strong sense of community. Greetings are important; a simple "Maayong buntag" (Good morning) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect for elders and local customs is highly valued. When visiting local markets or interacting with residents, a friendly demeanor and a willingness to engage respectfully will be appreciated.

Safety in Zamboanguita is generally good, as it is a relatively peaceful area. However, as with any travel, it's wise to take standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places like markets. Secure your valuables and avoid displaying expensive items openly. It’s advisable to use reputable transportation services and to be cautious when walking alone at night. For emergencies, know the local police contact number, which can usually be obtained from your accommodation.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around and finding directions to attractions. A translation app can be helpful if you encounter phrases you're unfamiliar with, though English is widely understood in tourist areas. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are commonly used by Filipinos.

Additionally, having the Traveloka app on your phone is highly recommended. It allows you to easily manage your bookings, search for other accommodations, and discover local attractions and activities. Having these tools readily available can significantly enhance your travel experience, making it more convenient and enjoyable as you explore Zamboanguita and its surroundings.

Had a great stay. Very reasonable rates. Staff is exceptionally nice. Had a massage everyday and it was wonderful. Water pressure is strong and has very hot water for the showers. Breakfast selections were good. I like that we had the option to add to the continental breakfast. I kinda wished there was a coffee kettle in the room though. Breakfast was not open until 7am so it would have been nice to drink a cup of coffee while watching the sunrise at 5am. I am not sure if there was any water dispenser available in the property for us to refill out water bottles but that would be a great add to the amenities. Maybe they did but I did not ask. I just took water bottles from the fridge. They do not have a lot of beach area but it was low tide when we were there so I was able to get in the water. A few rocks on the shore but once in the water, it was sandy. Lots of waves but that is what made it more fun. Otherwise, a great experience and will definitely book again.

A great place to be based for amazing diving. The staff are all lovely and helpful, especially the dive guides. Everything is clean and comfortable and the breakfast included in your room cost is very good. There is pretty much everything you could need at the hotel. Only downside for me was the cost, especially of the day trips that aren't dive related. For a solo traveller they charge double which I get but seems unfair to penalise someone travelling alone (save yourself a lot of money and DIY by googling ways of getting to attractions online). Also would've liked to see tea and coffee in the room but overall it was worth it and I'd 100% return and recommend.

We chose this resort to go to Apo Islands the next day. We thought we can enjoy the view of the ocean and swimming pool. There are a lot of dust and other stuff floating around, and the next day, our slippers, once soaked in the pool and swimming suits smelled terribly aweful. The restaurant inside the resort was very expensive with small portion, almost triple of the normal restaurant. There are no decent restaurants near the resort. You need to expect to spend some money here for the food. The room was nice though.

The resort is situated in almost a direct view of Apo Island. The island can be viewed from the pool, restaurant & some rooms serving as background for that perfect instapic. they also have their own large boat used to traverse to the island for snorkeling or diving. The room we stayed in was comfortable altho felt a bit dated. Our bathroom had an interesting feature with reflective glass windows. I would've rated this resort higher had their food been better but it was rather uninspiring. In fact we decided to have our dinner in Dumaguete city proper 45 mins away & lunch at a different resort because of this. The free breakfast was a notable exception.

Although, I am not a diver this resort offers great accommodation, food and beverage, and huge pool deep enough for a 6 ft person to enjoy. Staff extremely helpful and friendly as is the owner. Situated on the ocean with a nice view of Apo island. This resort is very well laid out. The restaurant food is fantastic and reasonably priced. Definitely recommend!

Très beau séjour à Thalatta. Nous avons apprécié le calme, la sympathie du personnel, les repas excellents. Seul bémol pas de plage et nous aurions aimé plus de sorties axées snorkel.

Great resort, friendly staff, good food and very good diving experience. Boatcrew and diveguided were the best we had during our stay in the Philippines. Loved the fact that you can combine great muckdiving and beautiful reefs at Apo. Would definitly stay here again! Recommended for divers!

Laurent

We stayed here 8 years ago. Wanted to come back and bring my girls. Due to Covid, the resort was almost empty, which was good and safe. The food was just ok, but overall a nice holiday
