Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is the most common method. Major airlines operate frequent flights from key cities like Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo to Manila. You can often find competitive fares, especially if you book flight tickets in advance through platforms like Traveloka, with prices potentially ranging from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip, depending on the origin and booking time.

From NAIA, you have several options to reach Makati. Taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available, offering a direct route that typically takes 30-45 minutes, costing around PHP 300-500. For a more budget-friendly option, you can take an airport bus or a combination of LRT/MRT trains and jeepneys, though this will involve more transfers and a longer travel time, potentially 1-1.5 hours.

If you are traveling from Luzon provinces, bus services are a practical choice. Numerous bus terminals in Metro Manila serve routes from Northern and Southern Luzon. The journey can range from a few hours to over ten hours, with fares typically between PHP 500 to PHP 1,500. Once you arrive at a bus terminal in Metro Manila, you can then take a taxi, ride-sharing service, or public transport to reach Makati.

Best Time to Visit Makati

Makati, like much of Metro Manila, experiences a tropical climate with two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season, generally from November to April, offers the most pleasant weather for exploring. Temperatures are warm, and rainfall is minimal, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. This period, especially from December to February, is considered peak tourist season.

The wet season runs from May to October, characterized by higher humidity and frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours. While this period might see fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, it's wise to be prepared for rain. Traveling during the shoulder months, such as November or April, can offer a good balance of favorable weather and fewer tourists, providing a more relaxed experience.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in Adobo, the unofficial national dish. This savory and tangy stew, typically made with chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a staple in Filipino households and restaurants. You can find excellent versions in many eateries around Makati, offering a comforting taste of home or a delicious introduction for first-time visitors.

Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, is another must-try. Its distinct flavor comes from tamarind broth, though other souring agents like guava or calamansi are also used. It's often prepared with pork, beef, fish, or shrimp, along with a variety of vegetables. The comforting warmth and unique tang of Sinigang make it a beloved dish, perfect for a hearty meal.

For those seeking something a bit more adventurous, Lechon is a celebratory dish that's hard to resist. This whole roasted pig is known for its incredibly crispy skin and succulent, flavorful meat. While often reserved for special occasions, many restaurants in Makati offer Lechon portions, allowing you to savor this iconic Filipino delicacy without needing to host a party.

Kare-Kare, a rich and savory stew, features tender oxtail and tripe simmered in a thick, peanut-based sauce, served with a side of bagoong (fermented shrimp paste). The unique combination of flavors and textures makes it a distinctive dish that showcases the depth of Filipino cuisine. It’s a satisfying meal that offers a different profile from the more common soy-sauce-based dishes.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and respect for elders. When interacting with locals, using polite language like "po" and "opo" is appreciated. It's also customary to remove your shoes before entering someone's home. Understanding and respecting these cultural nuances will enhance your interactions and overall experience in Makati.

Makati is generally a safe city, especially in well-trafficked areas like the business district and shopping malls. However, like any urban center, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings and take standard precautions against petty theft. Keep your valuables secure, avoid displaying expensive items openly, and be cautious of overly friendly strangers offering unsolicited help.

For emergencies, the general emergency number in the Philippines is 911. It's also helpful to have the contact details for your hotel and the local police precinct readily available. Staying informed about your immediate environment and trusting your instincts are key to a safe and enjoyable trip.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. Grab is indispensable for transportation and food delivery. Google Maps is crucial for navigation, and a currency converter app can be helpful for managing your budget. First and foremost, agent transferred me to a venue due to their very inefficient coordination with their partner hotels. I booked a hotel in gramercy only to find out all rooms are fullybooked despite the fact that sent a confirmation voucher. And so they transferred me to avenue where I waited for almost 3hrs to get checked in. They wasted my time. I already checked in around 6pm. The said they ungraded me but the room is awfully small without a couch (like what I wanted in the first place). Sometimes the price isn’t the basis for like a room to staycation in, and this time it just proves that perspective. Secondly, it was disappointing that even ice from their own hotel room service are not free. U paid for an overpriced ice these just because they ran out of supply and they had to but from 711. Concierge were helpful in assisting me but aren’t as assertive to get a hold on agent to confirm the booking they did. So what I realise after all these bad experiences is that agent and their hotel partners haveno solid collaboration techniques - such that they are not aware of room availabilities and the communication between them was so inefficient and inaccessible. I wonder if I didn’t provide the number of agent with their reception team, would have they resolved my issues? Just a piece of advice: learn to be more efficient in communicating with your hotel partners and make sure you don’t put so much stress on your customers who book hotel rooms with an obvious reason that they want to relax, but what happened was more stress on our parts. Ps: learn how to make it up to the clients they wasted time of and provide them at least nights in premium hotel rooms especially if they are faithful loyal clients for years. Else, I won’t be surprised if one by one of us slowly not use your service as it may entail unknown possibility of having our booked room not available even after getting confirmation.

To the Hotel's Management request to improve the following: 1. Towels and linens - looks untidy, seems that it is not washed well since stains are very visible and it does not smell fresh 2. ACU - leaks inside the room, makes the guest stay uncomfortable 3. Bath tub - not that clean. Water stopper is not available. 4. Shower - needs replacement, looks dirty. 5. Check in - sometimes guest can be accommodated in the room at 3pm. Noticed that rooms are cleaned at around 2pm only. 6. Wifi - very poor connection. 7. Bathroom doors - locks are broken

Our family's second time to stay in this hotel but we are so disappointed. We booked for a 3 days and 2 night stay. On our second day we noticed that there is a leak on the aircon, I immediately reported the issue on the reception and requested for a room transfer since we have additional room booked. As advised, they are fully booked so they could not accommodate my request. They let their engineering personnel fixed the ACU but nothing happen, the engineering personnel even asked me what will I do? Imagine, they are the one who should fix it but they are asking me what to do. Since I am already pissed and it is already 10pm, they already transferred me to another room. The room was upgraded but the bath tub is not functioning well - no available water stopper, the microwave is old and the wifi connection is very poor.

The hallways are very dark. The elevator smells bad and wiggly. Feels like they don't have the permit to operate it. The guard was not able to direct us right away for the parking. I asked the attendant if they have a smoking area and said they don't but there is when I asked the guard inside. The room doesn't smell like it has been cleaned very well. Some attendants are friendly.

Spacious room. location near Ayala SM Makati, there are lots of restaurant near-by. There is 7-Eleven convenient store next to the Hotel. Near NAIA. Good value for money. The only drawback is the room is not sound proof, especially there are cafes near-by with loud noise.

The staffs were accommodating and friendly. The hotel wasn't crowded. Check in & out is also quick. Though their wifi is extremely slow. The room / sofa smells a bit old or just has a bad smell on the nose eh. The lights were pretty dim so it was dark in the room and creepy at night. We enjoy it but not 'hotel feels' if u know what I mean.

Beds are too squeaky. We had to transfer to a different room, two times because beds are super noisy. It was such a hassle, noting that it was around 2 am and I had a baby to carry. Also, the room we transferred too small. With the amount we paid at 4k, we could've checked in into a different hotel with a more spacious room so my baby can walk around. It wasn't sulit for the price. Too bad, as we always opt to stay at a. Venue for staycation. We always stayed at the a. Venue suites and not at the a. Venue hotel and always have such wonderful experience this is the first time we stayed in a. Venue hotel and it was a really poor experience.
