Best value beachfront accommodation in El Nido
If you are looking for a real island-feel experience at a budget friendly price then look no further. It's situated in a beautiful island with amazing views and in close proximity to some of the El Nido tour stops (snake island, cudugnon cave) so you can kayak from the resort yourself if you want a bit more adventure. There's also a nice reef to the right of the resort you can snorkel in - we saw a sting ray and a turtle (although a turtle sighting is apparently rare). Another highlight is the food - our plates were always licked clean at the end of each meal, we enjoyed it that much. Another plus is that the kitchen tends to accommodate meal restrictions e.g. I don't eat squid and they prepared something else for me. They even made sisig for hubby who looooves sisig and prepared a boodle fight meal for our group who requested it. I have stayed in one of the high-end El Nido chains several years ago and I have to say that their food is better. Tours are run by the resort and they try as much as possible to avoid the crowds. They also don't clock your time at the spots, you can stay as long as you like which is a real plus. The tour lunches are no exception - delicious fresh fish grilled right on the boat, barbecued chicken, rice and fresh fruit.. what a treat! That said - don't expect this place to replace a luxury resort - there's no airconditioning (although it was never hot enough to need one) and electricity only runs from 5 PM - 8 AM. You won't notice it anyway if you are out and about - however for the days when the weather isn't so great e.g. you can't tour, snorkel or kayak then a powerbank will be helpful to power up your ipad / kindle. And bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper like me - the sound of the waves can be strong when the weather isn't that great.

Best Beachfront Value
A warm, family-run resort offers best value for a beachfront accommodation. The Alternative Beach Cottages (not to be confused with "The Alternative") has only 4 cottages in its property therefore offering exclusivity at such a reasonable price. Place is also close proximity to snake island and other beach-hopping tourist spots. My husband and I have been here a mutiple times and food is always good. Over an El Nido town accommodation, I prefer staying right smack on the beach where you get a real feel of the island.

Real El Nido Island Living
Had the Place all by ourselves and another Couple. Only 4 guests in Paradise, dutifully attended by a Hospitable Owner and Attentive, Friendly and well trained staff. The food was much better than I hoped. The facilities need some repair, but just my luck...they are actually repairing the other two cottages. The price is expensive compared to El Nido Town but cheap compared to the Island Resorts. For the value we received, It was worth the money. I will definitely recommend to my family and friends.

This Place is Epic
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Alternative Beach Cottages and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The family who run it genuinely want you to enjoy yourselves and the service is very good! The cottages are located on the family's private beach and you can use the kayaks and snorkelling equipment to go off and explore the local area. After being in the hustle of El Nido it is refreshing to be completely away from the crowds and to be able to do your own local version of island hopping via a kayak. Within 15 minutes paddle of the beach is a giant arch formation you can paddle through and the Cudugnon Cave and Snake Island (which forms part of the typical boat tours from El Nido town). There is also loads of great coral reef along the coastline making it perfect for a lazy couple of days paddling and swimming. We also went on a boat tour with the family and can recommend it highly. Depending on the weather they will take you out much earlier than the tours departing from El Nido meaning that you avoid the crowds. They also know the best spots for avoiding the rest of the tours and can recommend new itineraries if you've already been on tours. The food is also to a very good standard and the rooms were very spacious and clean. There isn't any air conditioning but we didn't have any issues with that whilst we were there - we visited in August. Would highly recommend this place is you like to get off the beaten track and enjoy exploring.

Amazing time in Paradise
This was a truly wonderful experience, and I can't sing their praises enough. I only wish we had stayed here longer. I am a vegetarian, and the food here was exceptional. My Filipino husband is not, and he had great food as well. He enjoyed the stuffed squid and the civiche. We had a buffet one night when we were there and that was really great, a lot of options for me as well as him. I think what made this so great was Erika, Kei, and their mom. It is a family run business, with the emphasis on family and not business. We are a gay couple, and I wanted to make sure they knew that when we made our reservation. I gave them the dates, so they could have just said that they did not have space. Instead, Alex, who I dealt with before we got there was very warm in his emails. When we got there Alex and his wife were not there, we were greeted very warmly by Kei. After we settled in, we had a delicious meal, and then spent the day hanging out at the beach. Erika, who was leading the tours when we were there, came back later and it was great getting to know both her and Mei. I told Erika our agenda, we were going to Miniloc from the Alternative Beach cottages, so I asked her if we should go on a tour with her the next day. We talked for a bit, and then after getting a sense of who we were, she said, just stay and enjoy the beach at the Alternative, it was just going to be us there the next day, so we had the beach all to ourselves. We met Erika and Kei a few days after we left The Alternative while we were on tour, and they were just as warm and gracious as when we were staying with them. A couple of things to know. Their web site tells you this as well. There is no air conditioning. My husband, who doesn't really like the heat, was fine. There was a nice breeze and we were comfortable the entire time. We only booked a few nights there because we (he) were concerned about the lack of air con. It truly was not a problem for us. Also, they only have electricity from around five at night until seven or so in the morning. One again, that was not a problem for us. We were happy to leave the room and just enjoy lounging around the beach. There are things to do there, and we snorkeled some. They also invited us to take the kayak to snake island, but we were really happy just playing in the warm water sitting on the white sand beach. We did stay at two other places in El Nido, the Miniloc, which was over three times the price and just not worth it. I'll review that as well, but the difference for me was the warmth of all the staff here at the alternative. It is really a small place, and they really did treat us like family in all the best ways. They seemed to really want us to be comfortable and enjoy our time with them, and they did a great job of making us feel welcome. I dream of going back there.
