Philippine hipster vibe, super clean and wonderful staff. It’s a bit noisy sometimes with a karaoke bar behind it across the road, people yowling out of tune till 2am one night I was there. But that’s Dumaguete. Delightful, warm place.

Your Travel Guide to Dumaguete, Negros Oriental as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Dumaguete from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Dumaguete from Manila and other major Philippine cities is most efficiently done by air. Several airlines operate daily flights to Dumaguete Airport (DGT) from Manila (MNL) and Cebu (CEB). Flight durations typically range from 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes. You can easily book your flight on Traveloka, with fares often ranging from PHP 2,500 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and how far in advance you book.

For those who prefer land and sea travel, a more adventurous route involves taking a bus and ferry. From Manila, you can take a bus to Batangas Port, then a ferry to Caticlan or Iloilo, followed by another ferry to Dumaguete. Alternatively, you can take a bus to Bicol and then a ferry. This journey is significantly longer, often taking over 24 hours, but can be a more budget-friendly option with bus fares ranging from PHP 1,500 to PHP 3,000.

Driving to Dumaguete is also an option for those coming from nearby Visayas provinces. The road network is generally well-maintained, with routes leading to Dumaguete City. For example, from Bacolod City, it's a scenic drive of about 4-5 hours. Toll fees would apply depending on the specific route taken. Regardless of your starting point, planning your travel in advance is key to a smooth journey.

Best Time to Visit Dumaguete

Dumaguete, Negros Oriental enjoys a tropical climate, making it a pleasant destination year-round. However, the best time to visit is generally during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and lower chances of rain, perfect for exploring the city and its surrounding natural attractions like Apo Island for diving or the waterfalls in Valencia.

The peak tourist season typically falls between December and February, coinciding with holiday breaks and cooler weather in other parts of the country. If you prefer fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or March to May. The wet season, from June to October, can bring occasional heavy rainfall, but it doesn't usually disrupt travel for extended periods and offers lush, green landscapes.

Food and Dining Near Dumaguete — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Dumaguete offers a delightful culinary scene that reflects its local flavors and influences. A must-try is the famous Silvanas and Sans Rival from Sans Rival Cakes and Pastries. These delicate, meringue-based treats with cashew nuts are a sweet indulgence that many visitors seek out. They are perfect with a cup of local coffee.

Another local specialty you should sample is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers, offering a tangy and refreshing taste. Many local eateries and restaurants along Rizal Boulevard serve excellent versions of this dish, showcasing the freshness of the seafood available in the region.

Don't leave Dumaguete without trying their local delicacies like Budbod Kabog, a sticky rice dessert flavored with millet and often served with latik (coconut curds). You can find this and other local sweets at markets or specialty shops. For a hearty meal, try the local seafood dishes, often grilled or fried to perfection, reflecting the bounty of the surrounding waters.

For a taste of authentic Filipino comfort food, explore the local carinderias and restaurants. Dishes like Adobo, Sinigang, and La Paz Batchoy are widely available and prepared with local flair. Experiencing the diverse food offerings is a significant part of any trip to Dumaguete.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Dumaguete

It's customary to greet elders with respect and use polite language. When visiting churches or more traditional establishments, dressing modestly is appreciated. Understanding and respecting local customs will enhance your interactions and overall experience.

Dumaguete is considered a safe city for tourists. However, like any urban area, it's wise to remain aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. The design was nice, location and accessibility are good. The staff is great. The food was nice. View from the room is excellent. I got bitten by insects that lodged in the blanket but the management cleaned the room asap and the insects disappeared. The hot water in the shower was iffy.

I booked a 2-night stay with this hotel for my parents who are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. Their staffs and manager were very kind, courteous, caring, understanding, and considerable. My parents had a hassle-free going from the airport to the hotel. They gave my parents a complimentary transport service. What I appreciated most was when I asked them if they could help me give my parents a little surprise for their 25th wedding anniversary since I was not there in dumaguete and they accepted my request without any hesitation. My parents were really surprised with the room arrangement! It was indeed a successful celebration for my parents. Overall, if I could give them a 10-star rating, I would! because they are really very CONSIDERATE and COURTEOUS with their customer! plus, as said by my parents, the hotel so so neat, beautiful, the ambiance is so good and the location is great! I LOVE THIS HOTEL AND ITS STAFFS SO MUCH!

The trendy vibe not so thrilling for me. Was happy to receive a free breakfast. The walls are very thin, but if you don't mind that the hotel is perfectly adequate and in a great location. Walking distance to the pier and so much more.

Philippine hipster vibe, super clean and wonderful staff. It’s a bit noisy sometimes with a karaoke bar behind it across the road, people yowling out of tune till 2am one night I was there. But that’s Dumaguete. Delightful, warm place.

The design was nice, location and accessibility are good. The staff is great. The food was nice. View from the room is excellent. I got bitten by insects that lodged in the blanket but the management cleaned the room asap and the insects disappeared. The hot water in the shower was iffy.

Very good location close ferry terminal ,bars ,shops .was a bit noisy at night from the traffic but it was ok I've had worse, the room was a bit of a shock at first it looks like it not finished but that's the theme and the longer I stayed the more I came to like it . Would I stay again probably not. The breakfast was nothing special standard Filipino food

It was a quick two nights but it was a good choice. It’s next to the port, so easy to get to the islands. The hotel is cool and chic. The breakfast was tasty and there are some restaurants and stuff around. Overall a great choice for a quick stay.

The hotel is unique in that it is a renovated old building with some of the fixtures and such left. Very charming. Great location by the bay and the breakfast was good. Staff was very friendly.

You get what you pay for. It was a good location , easy walk to the ferries, restaurants and bars. Minimalisstic would best describe the Brick's. I would stay there again due to the location and cost..
