I've had a great stay at The Flying Fish Hostel. Accommodating and friendly staff and the location is not that far from the city proper. The hostel is really spacious so hopefully they could add a fitness area for yoga and weights - absolutely excellent if they could have them in the future. Shout out to their awesome team for being so nice around! Hope to be back again.

One of the best looking hostels I stayed at - here in the Philippines. I love the industrial look of the room plus the spacious garden in the front. The rooms are spread out in the open - giving you more light and breathable space. I highly recommend this hostel to anyone traveling to Dumaguete soon.

Your Travel Guide to Dumaguete City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Dumaguete City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Dumaguete City from Manila is most efficiently done by air. Several airlines operate daily flights to Sibulan Airport (DGT), which serves Dumaguete. Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-friendly options can often be found for as low as PHP 2,500 to PHP 4,000 for a round trip if booked in advance. You can easily book flight tickets through Traveloka for competitive prices.

For those preferring a more scenic, albeit longer, journey, land and sea travel is also an option, though less common for those coming from Luzon. From other parts of the Visayas, you can take buses to Dumaguete. For instance, from Cebu City, a bus trip can take approximately 5-6 hours, with fares ranging from PHP 600 to PHP 900. Ferry services also connect Dumaguete to various islands, offering a different travel experience.

If you are driving from nearby provinces in Negros Oriental or Negros Occidental, you can expect well-maintained roads leading into Dumaguete City. The drive from Bacolod City, for example, takes around 4-5 hours. Toll fees are generally minimal on these routes. Planning your route in advance is recommended, especially if you are unfamiliar with the provincial roads.

Best Time to Visit Dumaguete City

Dumaguete City enjoys a tropical climate, making it a pleasant destination year-round. However, the dry season, typically from November to May, is considered the best time to visit for most Filipino travelers. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and lower chances of rain, which is ideal for outdoor activities, island hopping, and exploring the city's attractions.

The peak tourist season generally falls between December and February, coinciding with the Christmas holidays and cooler weather in other parts of the country. During this period, expect higher hotel rates and more crowds. For a more relaxed and budget-friendly trip, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or March to May, where you can still enjoy good weather with fewer tourists.

The wet season runs from June to October, characterized by occasional to frequent rainfall. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower prices, it's advisable to pack an umbrella and be prepared for possible disruptions to outdoor plans. Despite the rain, Dumaguete's charm remains, and many indoor attractions and cultural experiences are still accessible.

Food and Dining Near Dumaguete City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Dumaguete City is a culinary delight, offering a range of flavors that reflect its local heritage and influences. One dish you absolutely must try is **Kinilaw**, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, usually tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers, offering a tangy and refreshing taste that perfectly complements the tropical climate. You can find excellent kinilaw in many local eateries and restaurants along Rizal Boulevard.

Another local specialty is **Sutukil**, a cooking method unique to the region, which stands for Sugba (grill), Tuwa (stew), and Kilaw (raw). Many restaurants offer a Sutukil experience where you can choose your fresh seafood and have it prepared in any of these three ways. This allows you to sample a variety of flavors and textures, making for a truly satisfying meal.

Don't leave Dumaguete without trying **Halo-Halo**, a fitting choice for Filipino dessert. While available nationwide, Dumaguete's version often features local ingredients and a unique blend of flavors. It's a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It’s the perfect way to cool down and satisfy your sweet tooth.

For those who enjoy seafood, Dumaguete offers an abundance of fresh catches daily. Look for restaurants serving **Grilled Tuna** or other local fish, often simply prepared to highlight the freshness of the ingredients. Pair it with a side of garlic rice and a local dipping sauce for a complete and authentic Filipino dining experience.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Dumaguete City

Dumaguete City is renowned for its "City of Gentle People" moniker, and this is reflected in the local culture. Filipinos here are known for their politeness, hospitality, and laid-back demeanor. It's customary to greet elders with respect, and a simple "po" and "opo" go a long way. Dress modestly when visiting churches or more traditional establishments.

Safety in Dumaguete is generally good, with low crime rates compared to larger cities. However, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and keep your valuables secure. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. For emergencies, the local police hotline is usually 911, and it's good to have the contact numbers of your accommodation readily available.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A ride-hailing app like Grab can be useful for transportation within the city, though tricycles are the most common mode of transport and can be hailed directly. A reliable map application is crucial for navigating, and a translation app can be helpful if you plan to venture into more remote areas where English might not be as widely spoken. Lastly, a weather app can help you plan your daily activities around any potential rain showers.

I had the best time on this place. I love that it has comfy place, friendly staff, clean bathrooms and CRs, room is cool enough, and the whole place is so instagrammable. they also offer tour packages which I think is cheaper. I booked a Valencia tour package with them and Kuya Guyz who's their contact is so friendly, and really accommodating. Price for his tour is P800 + P200 transfer fee + entrance fee for the places you're gonna visit. But you can also ask Flying Fish staff to help you book him. Also booked my Apo Island trip for P1450 and it was a nice experience. Just make sure that you book it to them a day before your trip. I also love that there's a lot of near restos from it The only problem I had is that I lost my favorite shorts there after I left it to dry overnight. Some guest might have got it but I hope there's CCTV that we can check. Another issue I think is it may be too far from Rizal Blvd so when you are there and you want to go back to the hostel, trike drivers won't accept you unless you pay double. Overall, I'll give it an 8/10. It's still a highly recommended hostel.

Considering the hostel quality in the Philippines in general, I would say that the hostel was outstanding. Service was amazing, and the rooms were clean, beautiful, and relaxing. the location is pretty far for local commute to accept rides during the evening, but the distance makes up for its tranquillity. Amazing and kudos!

Had an awesome stay here. The staff were very accommodating. Clean and spacious room. Interiors are beautiful plus wifi connections fast. There's a restaurant also wherein you can buy food and drinks when you want to though it's not 24/7. Downside is, it doesn't have a kitchen for the travelers to prepare their food, plus water supply on the 2nd floor isn't that abundant. Hopefully it'll be fix soon but I'd love to stay here again.

The place is fantastic and earthly. You'll really get to know someone from their common space as it's very cozy. Though they don't serve food (Except breakfast) yet as I think they're still building the restaurant, there drinks like beers, soft drinks and all. Crews are friendly. while they also offer cheap tours like what we availed (apo island). On the picture, originally we're solo back packers and we just met in our dormitory type room. But yea, we're a group of back packers now. (See 2nd sentence for reference on how we had this trip)

I didn't expect the hostel to be nice and well-organized. The receptionist was very accommodating and it didn't take long for me to get to my room. The room is clean, well lit and I definitely loved the sheets! It was so comfortable that I slept the moment I laid on it. Common shower and toilets are a lot and definitely well-maintained. I will definitely come back here next time and will avail their island tours.

the place is not worth it in terms to proximity and price. I don't consider it as a boutique hotel but a low grade pension house. the bathroom is ridiculous.

Flying Fish keeps its rooms, facilities and premises clean. We stayed on a non-peak day and they allowed our group of 5 to keep our 8-bed dorm room to ourselves. The room was spacious but can be kept cool enough and with plenty of windows.

Clean and very instagramable rooms. Value for money for this kind of accommodation is excellent. Friendly staff and will recommend to others. 10 star for them :) Suggestion: Kindly replace the pillow, it's too thin hehe
