Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila is the most common and efficient method. Major airlines operate frequent flights from key cities like Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo to Manila. You can often find competitive fares, especially if you book in advance. From NAIA, you can take a taxi, a ride-sharing service, or the airport bus to reach Makati. Consider using Traveloka to book flight tickets to secure the best prices for your journey.

If you are traveling from nearby provinces or cities accessible by land, bus travel is a viable and economical option. Numerous bus companies operate routes to Metro Manila terminals, from which you can then take a local bus, jeepney, or taxi to Makati. Bus fares are generally affordable, ranging from PHP 500 to PHP 1,500 depending on the origin city and bus class. This mode of transport allows you to see more of the country's landscapes.

Driving to Makati is also an option for those who prefer the flexibility of their own vehicle. Major expressways connect to Metro Manila, and signage will guide you towards Makati. However, be prepared for significant traffic, especially during peak hours. Parking availability and costs in Makati can also be a consideration, so it's wise to research parking options near your accommodation or destination beforehand.

Best Time to Visit Makati

Makati experiences a tropical climate, with distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season, typically from November to April, offers the most pleasant weather for exploring the city. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it ideal for walking around, visiting outdoor attractions, and enjoying the city's vibrant street life. This period, especially from December to February, is considered the cooler dry season and is a popular time for both local and international tourists.

The wet season, from May to October, brings intermittent to heavy rainfall, often in the form of afternoon thunderstorms. While this might deter some outdoor activities, it also means fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices. If you don't mind carrying an umbrella and planning your activities around potential rain showers, visiting during this time can still be very rewarding. The city remains active, and indoor attractions like malls and museums are always available.

For Filipino travelers looking for a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, the shoulder months of November and February to April are excellent choices. These periods often provide a good compromise, with generally favorable weather conditions without the peak season congestion. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Makati offers a dynamic urban experience year-round.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No visit to the Philippines is complete without indulging in its rich culinary landscape, and Makati offers a fantastic starting point. You absolutely must try Adobo, the unofficial national dish. Whether it's chicken or pork, slow-cooked in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, its savory and slightly tangy flavor is a true Filipino comfort food. Look for it in local eateries or even in some of the more traditional restaurants around Makati.

Another essential dish is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth. It can feature pork, beef, fish, or shrimp, along with a variety of vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. The distinct sourness is incredibly refreshing, especially on a warm day. Many Filipino households prepare this regularly, and you can find excellent versions in local carinderias and restaurants throughout Makati.

For those who enjoy grilled delicacies, Lechon Kawali is a must-try. This is deep-fried pork belly, resulting in incredibly crispy skin and tender, juicy meat. It's often served with a side of soy-vinegar dipping sauce. The satisfying crunch and rich flavor make it a popular choice for celebrations and everyday meals alike. You can find this dish in many Filipino restaurants, often as a main course or an appetizer.

Don't leave without sampling Halo-Halo, the ultimate Filipino dessert. This colorful concoction is a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's a perfect way to cool down and satisfy your sweet tooth. Each vendor has their own unique combination, making every Halo-Halo experience a little different and exciting.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals in Makati, a friendly smile and polite greetings like "Magandang umaga" (Good morning) or "Salamat" (Thank you) go a long way. Respect for elders is also deeply ingrained, so showing deference is appreciated. While Makati is generally safe, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas.

When it comes to safety, it's advisable to keep your valuables secure and be mindful of pickpockets in busy public spaces and on public transport. Avoid displaying expensive items openly. For transportation, using reputable ride-sharing apps or metered taxis is recommended. If you encounter any emergencies, the local police hotline is 117. Having these numbers readily accessible can provide peace of mind during your travels.

To enhance your experience in Makati, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around. Ride-sharing apps such as Grab are widely used for convenient and often more affordable transportation compared to traditional taxis. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Viber are popular among Filipinos for staying connected with friends and family.
