Your Travel Guide to San Juan as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to San Juan from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, the primary gateway to San Juan is Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila. Numerous domestic flights arrive daily from major cities like Cebu, Davao, and Boracay. You can often find competitive fares if you book flight tickets in advance, especially during promotional periods. From NAIA, you can take a taxi, a ride-sharing service, or a pre-booked airport transfer to reach San Juan.

If you are traveling from Luzon, bus services are a common and economical option. Major bus terminals in Metro Manila serve routes from various provinces. Once you arrive at a terminal in Manila, you can then take a local bus, jeepney, or taxi to San Juan. The travel time and cost will vary significantly depending on your origin city and the specific bus company you choose.

For those driving from nearby provinces, you can utilize the expressways and national highways leading into Metro Manila. Major routes like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect to EDSA, the main artery of Metro Manila, from which you can navigate to San Juan. Be prepared for potential toll fees and significant traffic, especially during peak hours.

Best Time to Visit San Juan

The Philippines experiences a tropical climate, and Metro Manila, including San Juan, is no exception. The best time to visit is generally during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, making it ideal for exploring the city and its surroundings. Temperatures typically range from the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius.

The period from December to February is often considered the most pleasant, with slightly cooler temperatures and lower humidity compared to the hotter months of March to May. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices. If you prefer fewer crowds and are comfortable with warmer weather, the shoulder months of November and March to April can also be excellent times to visit.

The wet season, from May to October, brings with it higher humidity and frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours. While this season can offer lower prices and fewer tourists, it might disrupt outdoor activities and travel plans due to potential flooding and transportation issues. Nevertheless, with an umbrella and a flexible itinerary, visiting during the wet season can still be rewarding.

Food and Dining Near San Juan — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

San Juan and the wider Metro Manila area offer a culinary landscape that is a delight for any Filipino traveler. You absolutely must try Adobo, the unofficial national dish, a savory and tangy stew of meat (usually chicken or pork) braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. It’s a staple in every Filipino household and restaurant, offering a comforting and familiar taste.

Another dish that showcases the Filipino palate is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth, meat (pork, beef, fish, or shrimp), and a variety of vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. Its distinct sourness is incredibly refreshing and pairs perfectly with steamed rice. You'll find variations of Sinigang across the region, each with its unique twist.

For those who enjoy grilled flavors, Lechon Kawali is a must-try. This dish features deep-fried pork belly with a crispy skin and tender meat, often served with a dipping sauce of soy sauce and vinegar. The contrast between the crunchy exterior and the succulent interior is simply irresistible. It’s a popular choice for celebrations and everyday meals alike.

Don't leave Metro Manila without sampling Halo-Halo, the ultimate Filipino dessert. This iconic treat is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream, layered in a tall glass. It’s a perfect way to cool down and satisfy your sweet cravings, especially on a warm day.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for San Juan

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals in San Juan, a polite greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect for elders and a generally amiable demeanor are highly valued. Be mindful of noise levels, especially in residential areas, and always ask for permission before taking photos of people.

When it comes to safety, Metro Manila is generally safe for tourists, but it's always wise to exercise caution. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places like markets and public transport, to avoid petty theft. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. It’s also a good idea to have the contact numbers of local authorities readily available.

For seamless travel, having a few essential apps on your smartphone can be incredibly helpful. Ride-sharing apps like Grab are indispensable for getting around the city conveniently and affordably. You can also use navigation apps like Google Maps to find your way around and discover points of interest. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Viber are widely used by Filipinos to stay connected.

In case of emergencies, knowing the local emergency numbers is crucial. While specific numbers can vary, dialing 911 is generally recognized for emergency services in the Philippines. Having these apps and information at your fingertips will ensure a smoother and safer experience as you explore San Juan and the rest of Metro Manila.

I reserved this place for my daughter and friends who are checking out schools for college in Manila. My reservation included free breakfast and they told my daughter that it’s not, and have them pay for it. After complaining to expedia they tried to resolve it by giving them free lunch which was the same thing they had for breakfast (spam and egg). Another thing that my daughter reported that was weird was they had to leave their room keys to them whenever they leave, and that they had to call them to be able to get in their room. How inconvenient and the lack of privacy is very uncomfortable.

Our 3 nights in the hostel were ok largely because of the wonderfull staff who despite being underpayed and without proper space to sleep tried to do everything they could to make our stay a pleasant one. The bed was clean, the wifi and the aircon worked. Finding the place was difficult because of the renumbering in de street and the absence of a sign. The flushtoilet was out of order (flush yourself with the waste basket). The absence of a frontdesk is also difficult for a new visitor to the Philippines. All communication about the room, the wifi and the digital keylock of the door are sent on-line but is your local sim card for data is not yet operational you are in the dark. And the keylock did not work anyway because the batteries were empty. Everything was solved by the staff so for the more experienced traveler this is a cheap option that can work.
