Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers within the Philippines, flying into Manila is often the most efficient method. Major airlines operate frequent flights to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) from key cities like Cebu, Davao, and Palawan. Fares can vary significantly based on booking time and airline, but budget-friendly options can often be found for around PHP 2,000 to PHP 4,000 for a round trip if booked in advance. Travel time from major hubs like Cebu is typically around 1 hour and 30 minutes. You can easily book flight tickets on Traveloka for competitive rates.

If you are traveling from nearby provinces or prefer a more economical option, bus travel to Manila is widely available. Companies like Victory Liner, Genesis Transport, and Five Star Bus ply routes from Northern and Central Luzon, while DLTB and JAC Liner serve Southern Luzon. Bus fares generally range from PHP 500 to PHP 1,500 depending on the origin city and bus type (e.g., regular, executive). Travel times can range from 4 to 10 hours.

For those driving their own vehicles, Manila is accessible via a network of expressways and national highways. From North Luzon, the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) connects to the Metro Manila Skyway or EDSA. From South Luzon, the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) leads into Metro Manila. Be prepared for toll fees, which can add up, and significant traffic, especially during peak hours. Planning your route and checking real-time traffic updates is crucial for a smoother drive.

Best Time to Visit Manila

The ideal time to visit Manila for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, making it pleasant for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. Temperatures are warm, averaging around 28-32 degrees Celsius, so light clothing is recommended.

The period between December and February is often considered the most comfortable, with slightly cooler temperatures and lower humidity compared to the rest of the dry season. This is also a popular time for both local and international tourists, so expect larger crowds at popular spots and potentially higher accommodation prices. Booking your stay in advance is highly recommended during these peak months.

The wet season, from May to October, brings frequent rain showers and typhoons. While this period might see fewer tourists and lower prices, travel can be disrupted by heavy downpours and potential flooding. If you choose to visit during this time, be prepared for sudden weather changes and always check the weather forecast before making plans. Despite the rain, Manila's indoor attractions and vibrant food scene remain accessible.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Manila is complete without indulging in its rich culinary landscape. A must-try is **Adobo**, the unofficial national dish. Whether it's chicken or pork, simmered in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, its savory and tangy flavor profile is deeply satisfying. You can find excellent versions in local eateries and even in more upscale restaurants across the city.

Another Filipino favorite is **Sinigang**, a sour soup that comes in various forms, most commonly with tamarind broth. It’s typically made with pork, beef, or fish and a medley of vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. The sourness is incredibly refreshing, especially on a warm day, and it’s a staple in most Filipino households and restaurants.

For those with a sweet tooth, **Halo-Halo** is an iconic dessert that perfectly captures the Filipino spirit of combining diverse elements. This delightful concoction features shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s a colorful and delicious treat that offers a cool respite from the Manila heat.

Don't leave Manila without trying **Lechon**, a whole roasted pig known for its incredibly crispy skin and succulent meat. While often reserved for special occasions, you can find delicious lechon at specialized restaurants and markets. The rich, savory flavor is a true indulgence and a highlight of Filipino cuisine. Exploring local carinderias and food markets will offer authentic tastes of these and many other local delicacies.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Magandang umaga/hapon/gabi" (Good morning/afternoon/evening) is always appreciated. Respect for elders is paramount, so using "po" and "opo" (a sign of respect) when speaking to older individuals is customary. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for good service, usually around 10%.

When it comes to safety, Manila is generally safe for tourists, but it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and be mindful of pickpockets. Avoid displaying expensive items openly. It’s also advisable to use reputable transportation services, such as those booked through apps or official taxi stands. For emergencies, the national emergency number is 911.

For navigating the city and staying connected, several apps are highly recommended for Filipino travelers. Ride-sharing apps like Grab are essential for convenient and safe transportation. Google Maps is invaluable for navigation, providing real-time traffic updates and directions. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used. Having these apps on your smartphone will greatly enhance your travel experience in Manila.

Understanding local customs can enrich your visit. For instance, it's common for Filipinos to invite guests into their homes and offer food and drinks. Accepting these offers is a sign of politeness. When visiting churches or religious sites, dress modestly out of respect. Being open to experiencing the local way of life will undoubtedly make your trip more rewarding and authentic.

The hotel is ok but the air con is not that cold enough. Haven't experienced to use the pool since its under maintenance. Should have noticed online so that costumers will be aware before booking.

the room is not the same in the picture. it doesn't have any window to breath in. though it's clean naman. it's not my first time in that hotel. back then they even have a complimentary drinks but now they didn't offer anything. also it doesn't have an outside call. I tried to call for a food delivery but the telecom provider said that the company didn't pay the bill that's why its cut. so I used my mobile for that. I guess they are low on budget now..before they have mini ref. now they don't have..kinda frustrating 😔😔😔

A stay at this Hotel is always pleasant. Been here a few times and it always deliver the best service. Hotel staff are nice and the check in/out process is efficient. My daughter really loved the welcome cookies and the kid friendly pool. Keep it up!

I've stayed in this hotel many times. Staff are friendly, Food is good but can be expensive. Rooms are a little tired and dated but clean and good size. The one major issue I had this time is the wifi.. non existent anywhere in the hotel. On previous visits it has been an issue in some of the rooms but this time even at reception it was not available. The reception staff acknowledged the problem and said they had plans to improve it but in this day and age its not acceptable. If the will is there then it can be resolved in a very short time. I stayed almost a week in the hotel. For me I would not stay again unless the issue is resolved. Travelers need good access to wifi. One other comment would be in regards to the pool. The surround to the pool needs to be properly cleaned, a lot of green algae on the edge. Just needs some scrubbing to remove. I would worry that if this is not being attended to then maybe the water maybe neglected too.

Ads picture was deceiving..It was not good as it was..so many restrictions..Front desk duty not accommodating..Food was very expensive..Room aircon did not cool well. No doormats or rags for us to use when we came to room after swimming so the floor became wet..Pillows smells bad..

I've been to Manila 3 times because of my application for visa. I stayed at Casa Bocobo for the 1st two times and I have no negative comments about the place. The Staff is friendly and very accommodating, the place is simple but really perfect for it's price, it also has a great location . Oasis Paco Park is the exact opposite. The room is terrible and the staff are not friendly at all. I feel like we've stayed at the worst room.

Quiet place, cozy, wifi and air con functioning well, the only sore point was the one channel cable provided, only one channel.

Feels like home, very comfortable, clean room clean bathroom. AC and room facilities are functioning well. But unfortunately for the rooms above, they still have to be tired because there is no elevator, only stairs
